Summary
Winged ones are considered exotic animals, and it's illegal to own one. When the human population notices that the winged population is severely declining, they open up enclosures in zoos to start breeding programs.
Jared has grown up being mocked for being attracted to males - something he made clear when he didn't realize he would be made fun of for it by his peers for the rest of his life. He's convinced that no other winged one would ever be like him, and he's doomed to die without a mate.
When Jared fails to take place in the annual mating ritual once again, he is disowned by his family that finally realizes he's never going to change. On his own, Jared doesn't last long before he's caught by humans and put into a zoo enclosure. Jared sees an attractive male preening and showing off his wings in a clear invitation to mate, and even through his sadness at missing his freedom, he is filled with jealousy for whichever female has caught the man's attention.
Jensen was born and raised in the enclosure and never desired anyone as a mate, but the new arrival definitely catches his eye. He just can't quite figure out what he's doing wrong in his increasingly flamboyant attempts to attract him.
