Sirius focused on his eyes in the vanity mirror as he lined his eyes with the black eyeliner pen Lily had in her makeup drawer.
“Do you want some help there?” Remus could see that Sirius was struggling with the right wing.
“Could do, yeah. Thanks,” Sirius gave in after his fifth try and let Remus do it.
“Alright, close your eyes,” Remus positioned his head to look at him and his fingertips brushed Sirius’ cheekbones as he drew the swoop on his eye. Sirius could feel the warmth of Remus’ breath as he drew something else on his face. When Remus finally stopped drawing, Sirius glanced back at the mirror to see a little star and a moon in black ink on his cheekbones.
“Thanks, Moony,” Sirius said genuinely.
“Come on, Pads! We’re gonna be late to the party,” James hurried out of Lily’s dorm room and out of sight.
“I’m coming, jeez, calm your tits,” He heard Remus snicker behind him, and they went downstairs where the rest of the gang were waiting.
The marauders bounded up the front steps of The Three Broomsticks where Sirius was met with the rich aroma of butter beer and firewhiskey. Everyone was there, including the Slytherins and of course, Regulus. Sirius and James immediately threw themselves into the crowd of people who were already a bit tipsy. Sirius saw that Remus, Peter and the girls found a booth where they were ordering drinks.
About twenty minutes after they arrived, Emmeline Vance asked Sirius to dance as music was blasting from every speaker in the pub. After Sirius’ break up with Emmeline in July, he felt like an open book, not tied down by the weight of her constant need for dates and approval, and most of all: attention. Sirius politely declined Emmeline’s request and sat down at the booth across from Remus.
He glanced around for James, just to see the smug look on his face when he was hand in hand with Lily on the dance floor, it made him smile, but deep down he wished he could dance with someone else other than Emmeline.
“James’ finally made the right move,” Remus must’ve seen Sirius smile at James.
“Yeah, took him long enough,“ Sirius replied as Remus knocked back a shot of firewhiskey without making a face. Remus huffed a laugh at Sirius’ shocked expression. Sirius looked away as Remus’ slender fingers set the glass down on the table.

They had been there for around an hour and a half and the clock was about five minutes away from striking midnight, meaning it would be a whole new year; meaning it would be 1977. And Sirius couldn’t find Remus anywhere. He started panicking even though his favourite song: Lady Stardust, was playing which he would play any time something bad happened. Sirius looked everywhere: in the bathrooms, behind staircases, even in the kitchen; he could have sworn he even saw James talking to Regulus, but he ended up finding Remus outside smoking a cigarette. Of course. Why couldn’t he just look there in the first place?!
“Hiya Padfoot,” Remus said in a soft, smiling tone. He held the cigarette in his scarred hands and looked Sirius up and down. This made Sirius lose all of his grace, he glanced away quickly, hoping Remus couldn’t see the blush start to form on his cheeks.
He just said hi to you, you bastard, get a fucking grip.
Sirius tried to play it cool, but it was difficult when Remus’ eyes were all over him. He leaned against the wall, “I’been looking everywhere for you, y’know?” Sirius grabbed the cigarette stub from Remus and took the last drag. Remus sighed,
“I was just getting sick of the party,” Remus rolled his eyes which ended up straight on Sirius’.
Sirius nodded, gazing up into Remus’ warm, chestnut eyes, his gorgeous face at that. Remus reached for the back of Sirius’ neck with a sincere, trusting expression that Sirius couldn’t quite name. There was a hint of vulnerability in Remus’ eyes before he closed them and leaned in. Sirius could feel the world and Lady Stardust melting away. He knew what to do next. Sparks crackled through his body, pressing his lips onto Remus’ and cupped his face in his hands with twice as much passion. Remus tasted like firewhiskey and faintly of chocolate, he hoped he still tasted like toothpaste. The clock struck midnight and everyone’s faded cheers filled the atmosphere. This was his new years kiss.
Perfect.
They pulled away after what felt like forever, Remus’ lips pinker than usual and Sirius’ heart about to explode, Remus gave an almost unnoticeable sigh of relief, as if he’d been waiting for that moment forever. Sirius licked his lips and gaped in awe of Remus’ bravery.
You did it! The one thing you’ve been mindlessly manifesting for years has finally come true.
“I’m so sorry, I don’t know what I was thi-” Remus started.
Sirius kissed him again, this time with even more passion, as if the world was going to end the next day, as if this would be his last glimpse of Remus, his fingers twirling through Sirius’ long wavy hair. He took a hand to Sirius’ back and pressed him in. Sirius’ gates fell away, he felt secure in Remus’ arms. They held in embrace for a minute until the cheering subsided.
“Here’s to 1976, Moony.”
Remus nodded, smiling down at Sirius.
