Tangerine Skies and Muffled Cries

Summary:

Aruani Week day 1: Canonverse (Cadets)

Armin and Annie sneaked out from their night duty for some...

Work Text:

Armin stretched his arms high, waking up to prepare for another night patrol duty. Usually, cadets are required to report at least thirty minutes before to their post to go through pending tasks from their co-trainees. Night patrol is a relatively simple job compared to those cadets assigned to work during the day. Most of the time, night patrols simply involve roaming around the town, dealing with occasional incidents like drunk people fighting on the streets, or standing at the guard house to monitor any unusual activities throughout the night.

However, Armin never got used to this reversed routine. He had to get up at four in the afternoon, take a shower, put on his uniform, zip up his knee-high leather boots, and walk down to the canteen to have his first meal of the day. The food wasn't as good as it was when freshly cooked during lunch and dinner. Having meals between these hours meant they would be served leftover portions from lunch, as the cook would only start preparing an hour before dinner, by which time Armin had to report to his post. After being served a plate of mashed potatoes, buttered corn, steamed broccoli, and a small bowl of cabbage soup, now lukewarm, he picked up an apple before carrying his tray with both hands to the table where he had to eat alone.

Eren and Mikasa, being among the best at combat practice, were assigned morning duty for the week. It was heard that the Premier, the supreme commander of the military, would visit their training ground in the Southern Division soon. The Training Corps instructors assigned their best trainees to work during the day in case they had to interact with the Premier. For Armin, it meant he had to get through this week without his best friends.

By the time Armin arrived at his post at the guard house, it was already half an hour before seven. Franz had finished handing over his tasks to the blond before rushing down to meet with Hannah. Armin shrugged his shoulders, letting the taller boy know that he was fine being left alone in the guard house. Normally, there should be two cadets stationed at each post, but Armin forgot to ask around about who he would be working with tonight. He put his rifle down as he leaned against the wooden rails to watch the earth transition to nighttime.

The sun was about to set, and being perched up in the guard house was one of the perks of night duty. Armin watched in awe as the sky unveiled a breathtaking tangerine-colored celestial horizon, as the sun fought its remaining lights against the darkness threatening to hover over the vast space above the land. Weak rays of light illuminated the clouds in warm hues. A chilling autumn breeze hit his face, parting his fringe to the side, revealing his forehead. His golden locks must have been disheveled by now from the sudden gust of wind, but he couldn't care more.

The sight reminded him of the time when the three of them started to run towards the tree on the hill. He smiled at the thought of how time passed by unnoticed. Golden leaves that had fallen on the bed of green grass rustled as the last of the three reached the summit of the hill, his small frame lying down next to his best friends whom he loved the most. Laughing as Eren matched the tempo of his panting while his peripheral vision pictured Mikasa smiling next to them. A cold breeze whistled softly into their ears as the children watched the sky turn from orange to pink, then lilac to blue before the darkness enveloped the small space of land they lived in within the walls. It felt like only yesterday when he turned ten years old—still innocent, away from the bloodshed, the cruel world that was waiting to destroy their temporary home. Everything changed in just a blink of an eye. A short dream that turned into a nightmare.

Just like that, a few years had gone by.

He almost forgot that today he is turning—

A loud creak from the stairs snapped Armin out of his reverie. Feeling the wetness around his cheeks, he used his palms to wipe his face dry before glancing at someone climbing up the guard house. His eyes landed on her platinum blonde hair tied in a bun; her stern face displayed agitation, but the blond boy couldn't point out the cause. Her fist gripped tightly on the holster of her rifle, so tight that her knuckles had turned white. The rifle on her back appeared to be excessively bulky over her petite stature, but she carried the firearm as if it were a lightweight truncheon.

He was surprised but managed to smile weakly at the newcomer to acknowledge her presence. “Hi, Annie,” the young boy greeted, which made the agitated blonde soften her expression.

Although he knew Annie was capable of helping herself, Armin decided to walk towards her and held out his hand to help her climb up the last three steps of the narrow stairs.

She seemed a bit hesitant at first, probably debating inside her head whether to take his hand or shove his hands away. If it were other boys, she would surely do the latter without question. But it was the nice boy from Shiganshina, so she accepted his help.

Armin let out a sigh of relief when her cold hands met his warm one. He somehow wished his palms weren't clammy. Something inside his gut fluttered at the thought of touching her hand. He observed her fingers; although Annie was infamous for her strong physical combat skills, her fingers seemed delicate and dainty, adorned with slender nail folds that had turned slightly pinkish in low temperatures.

“Annie, why are you working at night? I thought the best-performing students are assigned to work in the morning this week,” he inquired shyly, watching Annie place down her rifle next to his.

Without turning to face him, she retorted, “I couldn’t sleep last night, so I failed to turn up on my duty this morning. Shadis asked me to come at night to put my nocturnal ass into use.” She snorted before leaning on the table to write down her name on a piece of paper pinned on a corkboard. She wrote the date, and he noticed she paused halfway before completing the letters.

...vember 849.

He wanted to ask her what the matter was but decided to keep his mouth shut. The last thing he wanted to happen tonight was to further annoy the girl. He kept silent and sat down in the corner of the guard house.

“Have you eaten?” she asked.

He was glad that she initiated the talk this time. Being classmates with her for years, Armin observed that Annie talked to selected kids only, including him. But that wasn’t his cue to cross the borderline. He still wanted to respect Annie’s space. If she was in the mood for a conversation, he’d gladly talk to her. If not, he’d give her peace. He even prepared a book to read throughout the night, but he was glad he didn’t need to use it so soon.

“Yes, I passed by the canteen hall before reporting here,” he answered.

“Good. I missed the meal today. They had long taken the food away when I came down to the canteen.” Annie propped her hand on her chin, her small frame leaning against the wooden rails. Her stomach growled, so she placed a hand on her belly to cover it.

Armin was surprised; maybe that is the reason she looked agitated earlier. She hadn’t eaten anything today. Armin thought he wanted to make an exception today, to do something different. He remembered the newly opened bakery shop Sasha wouldn’t shut up about for more than a week now. The shop is located just ten minutes away from their training area if he would ride a horse. His hand trailed inside his chest pockets; he had enough pieces of copper to buy two or three sugary buns.

Great.

Now he has to go unnoticed, but, of course, he wouldn’t sacrifice their duty, so he considered not telling Annie what he was about to do.

His mind started to construct a plan, standing up to look over the field. It was dark on the ground; he took a binocular, his eyes following a couple of cadets doing patrol rounding along the long stretch of the horse stalls. He recognized them as Das and Samuel. Easy targets.

Annie watched him as he talked to himself. Her stoic face said anything but at least she’s not being weirded out by him.

He did the math and a long list of bullshit excuses he could use to get away when Annie held him by his arms. “Armin.”

“Uh, yeah?”

“You’re planning to sneak out?”

Armin was taken aback, silently cursing himself. Why can’t he shut his mouth for once?

“Oh, ow! No. I-'m just bored,” he stammered, “I just started this weird game in my head just to entertain myse—”

“I’m keen on your plan,” Annie trailed off, interrupting him from talking. “I’m also curious about that new bakery shop Sasha talked about yesterday.”

Armin’s shoulders drooped in resignation. Once Annie made up her mind, there was no way she was backing away. Still, he tried to convince her against the idea. “Annie, I’m not dragging you into this stupid idea. What if it fails? What if Shadis catches us? At least, if I get caught you won’t be in it.”

“Armin, you have to trust yourself for once. We are graduating soon. It’s not like Shadis will not let us leave this place,” she encouraged, already preparing to leave. Armin followed behind her.

It didn’t take long to convince Das and Samuel to cover the guard house. Armin’s good-boy records and Annie’s serious personality gave the two boys the impression that the blondes wouldn’t do something funny while on duty, so they agreed, only giving them thirty minutes or else they would leave the post unmanned.

To go unnoticed, Armin and Annie used their raincoats to conceal their identities, covering their faces with hoodies. Armin was aware that Annie owns a white horse, which is very rare among the trainees’ horses. If she goes with it, there is a huge possibility that someone will recognize it. So he convinces Annie to ride with him. Armin was given a thoroughbred horse with chestnut-colored hair, his horse almost identical to the ones Eren and Marco own. Luckily, the animal was stalled in the corner of the barn, so it was easy for the blondes to take it.

With only less than ten minutes of horse riding, they reached the bakery shop. It wasn’t as grand as those situated inside the town, but they made decent-quality bread, cake, and pastries. Squad leaders usually come there to buy take-outs as the owner gives free tea to the soldiers.

“Hey, lads! Come in, come in!” the old man, whom Armin assumed was the owner of the shop, called from behind the counter.

Armin took Annie’s hand as they entered the shop. Their eyes feasted on various breads in different shapes and sizes. The warm smell of loaves being baked in charcoal wafted around the small shop, making them crave more. Armin noticed a huge flat cast iron in the corner of the shop. The counter was adorned with containers full of fruits, creams, and butter. His excitement and curiosity peaked, unconsciously pulling Annie by her hand anywhere he goes.

“What is this for, mister?” Armin asked innocently, his eyes shining at the unfamiliar equipment.

“Oh, I use this cast iron to make Palačinke. My wife came from Ehrmich, so she taught me how to make this specialty. Would you like to try?”

“How much for one order, then?”

“That is nine copper. I’ll give the filling complimentary for both of you.”

Armin smiled awkwardly. He only carries six copper in his pocket. “Maybe we’ll come back next time—”

“These look delicious,” Annie cut him off, browsing the displays of plated Palačinke. “Armin, we have to try it.” She said softly. Her face remained stoic, but there was a glint of excitement in her voice. His heart breaks for not bringing enough money, but before he can retort, Annie reaches out from her chest pocket and pulls out two silver coins.

“We’ll get one order, please. And for the change, I’ll get three pieces of sugary buns.” She approached the store owner, handing the coins.

The old man smiled wider, “Order received, Miss.” He started to take the ladle, scooping until its hemispheres were filled with the mixture, and carefully poured it into the heated cast-iron disc. The old man took a wooden spreader to effortlessly drag the mixture until it covered the whole disc. Smoke escaping as he worked each step in a circular motion. Armin could swear that the smell of butter being cooked with the mixture was the most mouth-watering smell he ever experienced.

Then Armin’s attention went back to Annie as she browsed for more pastries in the display cabinet. A slight smile formed in the corner of his lips. He was interrupted when the old man whispered to him. “Listen, kid, next time you treat your girlfriend here. I’ll give you free cups of hot chocolate. I bet boys your age are jealous of you. She’s dazzling and beautiful.”

Armin gasped, “She’s— she’s not my girlfriend.” His cheeks turned into a blushing mess. The old man winked at him, placing his forefinger in front of his lips, gesturing him to lower his voice or she’d hear him.

“Alright, you choose your fillings.” He pointed at the rows of containers on the counter. Annie walked back to them and pointed at the fruits she liked. Four slices of strawberries, kiwi, blueberry jam, and banana slices. The old man spread the jam on the half side of the Palačinke before he carefully placed the slices of fruit Annie chose. He finished it off with whipped cream before rolling it closed. He put a generous amount of chocolate drizzle before wrapping it with parchment paper.

Armin was sure Annie’s eyes brightened as soon as she received the bag full of sweet stuff. He noted to himself to be a gentleman and bring enough money the next time he asked her out.

“So, you really like sweets, don’t you?” Armin began, both teenagers stepping out of the shop.

“This reminds me of crepes back in my hometown,” Annie spoke, still ecstatic about their purchase.

“Crepes?” He asked as if hearing the word for the first time. Annie gasped, caught off guard, but before he would notice, she masked her expression. “That is some kind of delicacy from where I came from.”

“I see, we don’t have such a thing back in Shiganshina,” Armin smiled bitterly. “Even if we did, I don’t think I could afford such luxury.”

Annie stopped walking, turning to face him. She unwrapped the Palačinke. “We can share it,” she offered.

“I’m good. I’m not really hungry,” he politely declined, waving his hands up in his chest. But Annie insisted, closing the gap between them. So close that he could smell the sweetness of Palačinke. He grabbed her wrist and took a small bite without any other choice. Armin wasn’t sure if it was the dim light or if he caught Annie smiling at him. She had the kind of smile that made his chest feel warm. Maybe that was the effect of eating something so delicious he started to hallucinate.

Then her hand pulled back without moving away from him. It was her turn to take a bite. He watched every movement of muscle on her face as she chewed a mouthful. How come she could be so beautiful it hurt him?

They took bites alternately until there was leftover cream on the corner of her mouth. Armin used his thumb to wipe it clean. Her eyes trailed at his thumb, watching him lick the cream from the pad of his finger innocently. Her face started to turn into a shade of tomato.

They were lost in time, forgetting about their duty in the guard house. Armin flinched, remembering Das and Samuel might have left their post by now. By watching his expression change, Annie might have read what was in his mind and quickly shoved the Palačinke back inside the bag.

“Holy shit!” they both exclaimed in unison.

“Are you sure they haven’t come back?” Eren, in his pajamas, walks towards the guard house, with Mikasa, Samuel, Das, and Mina behind him.

“Yeah, Armin told us to switch posts for thirty minutes, but until now, they haven’t come back. We got worried something might have happened,” Samuel retorted, obviously anxious about their missing classmates.

“He was with Annie. I’m sure they will be fine. It’s not like they were sneaking out during their duty,” Mina added.

“The problem is, they weren’t in the barn either,” Mikasa started to climb up the guard house. Eren followed.

“Do you think we should start telling Shadis?” Das suggested.

Before they could open the door, they heard a huge thud coming from inside the guard house.

“Armin, that was treacherous,” they heard Annie’s voice behind the door, causing exchanged glances from their worried friends before Eren rushed and kicked the door open.

“Armin! Annie! What is going on?” The green-eyed boy exclaimed.

There were raincoats, boots, and brown jackets spread all over the floor. Armin was lying next to Annie, and they were panting profusely, sweat dripping down their necks despite the chilling night. Armin’s shirt was unbuttoned down to his chest.

Their friends screamed at the scene. Mina covered her eyes as she rushed down the stairs. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry, guys!”

It took a while before it sunk into the boys. They followed Mina as they apologized as well. Mikasa pulled Eren out from the guardhouse with an unbelievable expression flashed on his face. “Armin, I can’t believe you—” he got cut off after Mikasa closed the door.

“What’s up with them?” Armin asked, still watching the door.

“Who knows?” Annie retorted nonchalantly. She placed an arm on her forehead as she panted. “That reminds me, I haven’t greeted you Happy Birthday yet.”

“Thanks,” Armin managed to smile. Their faces were so close that they could feel each other's warmth. Annie curved her lips up slightly. He was now sure he wasn’t hallucinating, but this time he couldn’t help but ask,

“How did you know today is my Birthday?”

After that night, they were called to Shadis' office not because they sneaked out during their night duty but to clarify some rumors going around that they made out at the guard house that night. Armin surmised that is the reason Berthold keeps ignoring him in the boys' barracks and Annie’s sudden mood changes during training.

Notes:

Hi! Here's my first entry for Aruani week! (Posting on the third day LOL. I have my own pace so yeahhh)

Anyway, this is my first time writing in the canonverse and attempting a one-shot. As you all know, I'm more accustomed to modern and high school AUs. However, writing in the canonverse isn't too bad either. In fact, I really had a lot of fun. So, I hope you guys enjoy this one too. More to come in the next few days!

I will slowly work on my entries because life is beating me up, and I have a job.

Announcement: "Hiding in Plain Sight" and "Love Letters" will be put on hold temporarily for Aruani week. Then I will be taking a short break, but hopefully, I will be back to updating my fics by February.
