Chapter Text

One Year After the Alvarez Empire War

The morning sun cast a golden hue over the rebuilt town of Magnolia, reflecting a year of tireless effort and unwavering resilience. It had been a year since Fairy Tail's triumph over the Alvarez Empire, a victory that came at a high cost. The immense destruction and drastic shifts in the landscape, caused by Irene Belserion's magic, had rendered Fiore a canvas of ruins. But today, it stood renewed, a testament to the strength and unity of its people.

The rebuilding of Fiore was not just a physical endeavour; it was an emotional and communal one. The war had left deep scars, not only on the land but in the hearts of many. The loss of loved ones and the injuries sustained were wounds that took time to heal. Yet, as the buildings rose from the ashes, so too did the spirit of the people. Guilds from all corners of Fiore had joined hands in this colossal task, weaving together the torn fabric of their nation.

Fairy Tail, the guild at the forefront of the war and the rebuilding, was bustling with preparations. Today, they would host the one-year anniversary of their victory, a celebration of remembrance and hope.

The guildhall of Fairy Tail was alive with the hum of voices and the warmth of camaraderie as Erza Scarlet, Titania, the Queen of the Fairies, took her place at the centre of the hall. Her red hair cascaded down her shoulders, catching the light as she prepared to address the crowd. The mages of Fairy Tail, alongside representatives from other guilds and the people of Magnolia, turned their attention to her, a hush falling over the room.

"Friends, comrades, and citizens of Magnolia," Erza began, her voice strong and clear, "today marks a year since our victory against the Alvarez Empire. A year of rebuilding, not just our homes and streets, but our lives and hearts."

Her eyes swept over the crowd, a fondness evident in her gaze. "Together, we have woven the torn fabric of our nation back together, proving that our spirit is unbreakable. The road has been long, and the wounds deep, but our resilience has turned scars into symbols of hope."

Yet, despite her inspiring words, a hint of sadness lingered in her eyes, an emotion she skillfully masked from the crowd but not from those who knew her well. Subtly, as she made her way through the guild, her gaze occasionally darted through the crowd, searching, hoping to spot a certain blue-haired mage. His absence was a quiet note in the symphony of her heart, an unspoken yearning amidst the celebration.

After making her rounds, greeting and thanking the various guild members and citizens, Erza quietly excused herself, slipping away unnoticed to the roof of the guildhall. The longing to see him, to share this moment of triumph and remembrance, weighed silently within her as she sought solace under the starlit sky.

Gray Fullbuster, standing among the crowd, listened to Erza's speech with a sense of awe. Her strength and eloquence were unparalleled, and there was no one better suited to deliver such a message of hope. However, as a keen observer and a close friend, he noticed the subtle signs of her inner turmoil - the slight heaviness in her step, the faint frown pulling at her lips.

As the celebration continued, Gray realized that Erza had left the main hall. Knowing her well, he understood that Erza was never one to leave a function early without a significant reason. Concern etched on his face, Gray excused himself from the festivities and began to search for her, his intuition guiding him towards the roof.

The cool night air greeted Gray as he ascended to the roof, where he found Erza gazing over Magnolia, bathed in moonlight. Her solitary figure, clad in silver, mirrored the celestial glow above.

"Erza," Gray's voice was a soft intrusion into the silence.

She turned, a small smile gracing her features. "Gray, what brings you here?"

He moved closer, their mutual comfort in the quiet speaking volumes. "Just wanted to make sure everything was alright," he said, his presence a silent testament to his unwavering support for her.

Erza's gaze returned to the horizon. She didn't need to voice her thoughts; Gray understood. He had always been there, a constant in her life, setting her free from the expectations others might have imposed. He was her oldest, most selfless friend, always ready to share in her pain without being asked.

Gray leaned against the railing beside her, breaking the silence with a hint of his characteristic banter. "You know, I always thought the moon looked better from up here. But I guess, with you standing here, it's got some tough competition."

Erza chuckled, the sound mingling with the night air. "Are you trying to cheer me up or challenge the moon to a beauty contest, Gray?"

He shrugged, a playful glint in his eyes. "Why not both? But we both know who would win."

Their laughter, light and easy, filled the space between them. Over the years, Gray and Erza had grown more comfortable with each other, their bond evolving and deepening. The banter that passed between them now was as natural as breathing, a testament to the ease and familiarity that had developed from countless battles and shared experiences.

However, the mood shifted to a more contemplative tone. Erza's eyes, reflecting the starlit sky, held a depth of understanding born from years of facing darkness.

"The world is finally free of Zeref," Erza said, her voice tinged with a mix of relief and contemplation. "But I know that doesn't mean the end of evil. Troubles will continue; such is the nature of our world."

Gray turned to face her, his expression serious yet resolute. "You're right, Erza. But as long as we're a team, as long as Fairy Tail stands together, we'll face whatever comes our way. We've proven that, time and again."

Erza nodded, her stance firm, yet comforted by his words. "Together," she echoed, a silent vow that resonated between them. Their gaze shared a mutual understanding, an unspoken agreement that no matter what challenges lay ahead, their unity and strength would see them through. Under the night sky, they stood together, two mages in a comfortable silence, each a pillar of strength for the other.

The night was serene until a loud bang erupted from below, a sound so quintessentially Fairy Tail that Erza couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Of course, the guild was back to its usual chaos. She made a move to head downstairs, ready to restore order and ensure the guild remained in one piece, but Gray's voice halted her.

     "One dance, Erza?"

She turned, her eyebrow raised, slightly flustered. "N-now?" she stammered, incredulous. "There's no music playing, and we're the only ones here."

Gray shrugged casually, a slight smirk on his face. "You know, once you go down there, you'll have your hands full for the rest of the night. Plus, it would be a crime not to ask a beautiful woman like you to dance."

Erza felt her ears flush with warmth, but she couldn't suppress the smile that crept onto her face. She had to admit, Gray always knew what to say and do to lift her spirits. It would indeed be rude to reject such an offer, especially from Gray, who wasn’t typically one to dance.

With a soft chuckle, she accepted his hand. As they danced in silence under the moonlight, Gray led with an unexpected grace, twirling her gently. The world below them faded away, leaving just the two of them on that rooftop, moving in sync to a rhythm only they could hear.

After the dance, Erza finally excused herself to attend to the guild. As she left, she turned to Gray, her smile genuine and grateful. "I'll talk to you later, Gray.”

Gray lingered for a few minutes on the roof, lost in thought, before he followed Erza downstairs. The guild was in its usual state of cheerful pandemonium. He couldn't help but smile as he saw Erza reprimanding Natsu for some mischief. "That idiot," Gray thought affectionately.

As he navigated through the crowd, Juvia approached him. Their relationship was complicated, to say the least. Gray knew he had to be honest with her, but finding the right time seemed impossible. He cared for her deeply, was indebted to her for saving his life, but he didn't love her in the way she wanted. The guilt of this unrequited love weighed heavily on him.

"Would Gray like to dance with Juvia?" she asked, her eyes hopeful. Juvia had dropped the "-sama" from his name, a change that pleased Gray, but her feelings were as evident as ever.

Gray hesitated. He didn't want to lead her on, yet he also didn't want to hurt her, especially not tonight, on a night of celebration. Reluctantly, he agreed to one dance, hoping not to send the wrong message.

As they danced, Gray noticed his guildmates' glances. He realized this might not have been the best idea. The moment to break her heart, something he dreaded, seemed to be drawing inexorably closer.

"Juvia wants to thank Gray for accepting her dance," Juvia said, a touch of bashfulness in her voice. "Gray didn't have to say yes."

Gray took a deep breath. "Listen, Juvia..." he started, his voice gentle. "You're an incredible person, strong, kind, and caring. The time we've spent together, it's meant a lot to me. You've been a great friend, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate everything you've done." He paused, searching for the right words. "But I need to be honest with you. My feelings... they aren't the same as yours. I care about you a lot, but not in the way you want me to. It wouldn't be fair to you, or to me, to pretend otherwise."

Juvia listened, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions, from hope to understanding.

"I respect you too much to lead you on," Gray continued. "You deserve someone who can love you the way you deserve to be loved. I hope we can still be friends, because that's what I truly value about us."

To his surprise, Juvia took it well. "Juvia suspected Gray did not feel the same way," she admitted softly. "Juvia is just thankful for the kindness Gray has shown her."

They finished their dance with a mutual understanding and respect. As they parted ways, Gray felt a weight lift from his shoulders, hopeful that Juvia would find the happiness she deserved.

At the end of the night, as the guildhall was quieting down, Erza caught up with Gray who was walking out. She had a knowing look in her eyes, one that spoke volumes.

"I’m proud of you," Erza said, referring to his conversation with Juvia.

Gray groaned in response. "Does all of Fairy Tail know?"

Erza placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression earnest. "I mean it, Gray. It was quite admirable of you to be honest about your feelings. I know it wasn't easy."

Their conversation shifted subtly, a certain look in Erza's eyes reminding Gray why he had followed her to the roof earlier. Noticing this change, Gray suggested they walk down to the waterfall. The riverbank, which had been reshaped by the war into a waterfall, was a spot Gray had grown even more fond of. The loud rush of water created a private space where their conversations remained their own.

It was a place they frequented, a haven for discussions about life and love. Gray had always been open about his feelings for Juvia, largely due to Erza's encouragement. However, Erza had always been more reserved about her feelings for Jellal. Tonight, though, something was different. Erza's "I'll talk to you later," hinted that she was finally ready to open up.

As they reached the waterfall, its powerful cascade creating a private cocoon around them, Erza turned to Gray, her eyes reflecting an unusual softness.

She spoke of Jellal, her voice tinged with a blend of tenderness and disappointment. "He didn't show up again," she said, her words more of a reflection than a complaint. "He's free, he's atoned for his past, and yet... he's still not here. I thought, maybe this time..."

Gray listened, his expression one of understanding, as Erza continued, her tone neither angry nor resentful. "I'm not the same girl who was in that tower anymore. The world has moved on, but it seems he hasn't."

There was a pause as Erza collected her thoughts. "I've saved him a seat, but he says he wants to stand. I'm tired, Gray. Tired of pleading with powers and their plans. We're like parallel lines, always close but never destined to meet. I've spent so long thinking about us, but I can't rewrite our lives. He has his path, and I have mine. And I like my life here... with you..."

Her voice trailed off, a hint of realization in her words, "With the team, with Fairy Tail. You guys are my family."

Gray felt a swell of emotion in his chest. He stepped forward and embraced Erza, offering her the comfort only a true friend could. He had managed to find his way through the armour protecting her heart, understanding her in ways few others could.

They sat down together, enveloped in the sound of the rushing water, sharing a moment of silent companionship. In this space, free from the eyes of the world, they found solace in each other's presence, understanding the unspoken truths that lay between them.
