Work Text:
Mary Macdonald was not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. This only became a problem when she began sleeping in Lily’s bed.
Before, Lily would spend a few minutes every morning squatting next to Mary’s bed, briefly trying to shake her awake before giving up and going downstairs for breakfast; leaving her at Marlene’s mercy. Marlene’s strategy tended to be throwing pillows at her until she got out of bed. It had its merits.
Now, with newfound developments in their relationship, Mary would fall asleep in Lily’s bed most nights, and while Lily was strict about kicking her out, a few nights slipped through the cracks. There were nights when she was breathless from Mary’s kisses, and too groggy to care about anything else but Mary’s arms wrapping around her. This was one of those nights.
Lily blinked the sleep from her eyes, stretching her arms above her head and yawning. She only noticed Mary beside her when she tried to pull back the curtains of her four-poster bed and found herself immobile.
Her girlfriend was fast asleep with her arms latched around Lily’s waist, her mouth wide open, curls askew. A wave of panic rushed through Lily at the sight, and she immediately began to lightly tap Mary’s cheek, silently begging for her to wake up.
No one knew about their relationship; not even Marlene. Mary’s hope that Marlene wouldn’t care didn’t hold a candle to Lily’s anxiety about every single person in her life.
“Mary,” Lily whispered urgently, continuing to tap her cheek, “I need you to wake up right this second.”
“Lily?” Marlene’s voice, still thick with sleep, drifted through the curtains. She froze. “Did you say something?”
“No!” she called back, maybe a little too quickly. “I didn’t say anything!”
“Oh…alright.”
Lily remained perfectly still, hugging Mary’s slumbering form to her chest while listening to the sounds of Marlene getting ready for the day.
“Do you want me to grab you anything for breakfast, Lils?” Marlene asked, pausing with the door halfway open.
“Uh…no. I’ll be down in a few minutes.”
“Okay. Just wanted to offer in case you wanted to spend more time with Mary.”
Lily’ heart skipped a beat. “I-um, I don’t know what you mean.” This could not be happening.
“Uh huh.” She could practically hear the smirk in Marlene’s voice. “I’ll see you in Transfiguration.”
Mary stirred in Lily’s arms when the door to their room slammed closed. She smiled up at Lily, blinking sleepily. “Well, I guess Marls knows now,” she said with a wide grin.
Lily shook her head, burying her face in Mary’s hair. “It’s not funny,” she mumbled miserably.
“Oh, it is so funny, babe. It is absolutely hilarious.” She sat up in the bed and stretched, dislodging Lily from where they were attached. “Peak of comedy right here.”
Lily frowned at Mary, dodging the hand that shot out to ruffle her hair. “You know that she’s never going to shut up about this, right?”
“Oh, I know. I’ll catch her with Dorcas next week and we can call it even, alright? I can borrow your Prefect badge and everything.”
Lily laughed in spite of herself. “In your dreams, Macdonald.” She leaned forward and kissed Mary’s forehead, not caring at all in that moment that her girlfriend wasn’t a morning person.
