Work Text:
Kisa was going to kill him when he woke up. Yukina very much knew that. The knowledge of what would soon be his imminent death did nothing to deter the happiness present on his face as he looked upon the shorter man, sleeping deep and soundly in his chair across from him.
The two men were seated in a coffee shop, the same one where they had kissed those many years ago, and Yukina was taking the opportunity of the sleeping Kisa to draw his image, a task the older would never have allowed should he have been conscious.
It had been a hectic few days for the couple so Yukina wasn’t surprised to find the man before him asleep.
A waitress came by to refill Yukina's coffee and he watched as the appearance of another person caused Kisa to shift, his left hand coming up to rub the sleep out of his tired eyes, the ring on his fourth finger briefly catching the lights overhead, before Kisa flinched when his eyes landed on Yukina, moving said hand to shield his eyes as he muttered “too bright” under his breath.
“Good morning Shouta.” Yukina happily replied, smile growing as he looked upon his awakening fiancé, his sketchbook now closed and deftly put away to the side before Kisa could come completely to.
“Ah, Yukina, sorry did I fall asleep.” The shorter man asked, a blush adorning the soft features of his face.
Even after four years of being together, Kisa now thirty-four, he somehow seemed to be aging in reverse. Sometimes Yukina thought Kisa could do with some wrinkles, or at least show signs of the time they had spent together, but he kept those thoughts to himself, just happy that his beautiful partner was looking more rested and less like walking death as he had when they had met up this morning.
“Oh no, it’s fine, I know how the last day of the cycle can be!” He exclaimed, knowing full well that the shoujo manga editing department sometimes needed to work through the whole of the night to get the pages off to printing in time, Japanese labor laws no doubt being violated. Kisa and Yukina had decided to meet at the coffee shop instead of meeting at home to avoid Kisa falling asleep. “Eh, but why are you calling me Yukina! Shouta-San, we’re getting married, you really need to start using my first name.” The artist exclaimed, pulling a face that showed he was only half serious.
“Kou, alright l - just please stop saying so many things out loud!” Kisa whisper yelled, the blush on his face growing exponentially. But Yukina couldn’t help notice the subtle glance Kisa sent to the ring on his finger, hands now resting on the table.
Yukina smiled indulgently, finding Kisa’s shyness around any public displays of affection still so cute.
“What time is it by the way?” Kisa said moving on, stealing Yukina’s fresh cup of coffee in an effort to try to wake up more.
“It’s almost two pm!” Yukina replied, a happy expression on his face that Kisa swore caused a barrage of flowers and sparkles to suddenly appear.
Kisa choked on his coffee, Yukina unsure if it was from his answer or face this time.
“Why didn’t you wake me up! We’re going to be late! I do not want my brother to meet your family alone.” Kisa said in a rush of words scrambling to put on his coat and gather their belongings.
Yukina reached out to hold his hand, the older man immediately pausing to glance at him. “You’re tired. I already texted everyone to ask that we meet an hour later and they don’t mind.”
Kisa immediately sat down, slumping in his chair as his body relaxed from the immediate panic. “I’m too old for this stress. Kou, let’s not get married.” Kisa lamented as he waved his hand in mock dismissal. Yukina laughed comfortably at the remark.
The proposal really had been a remarkable thing. Yukina had always known he would one day get married but it wasn’t until he met Kisa that he knew this was the person he would spend the rest of his life with. When Yukina gave Kisa the ring he made for his thirty-first birthday, it was a silent promise to himself that one day, when he was able to take care of Kisa-san, he would ask him to be his husband. Of course, Kisa-san loved his job, even if it was probably killing him, but Yukina wanted to provide for his lover in every way, the same way that Shouta always cared for him.
Yukina and Kisa had moved in together about a year prior. It was the same home Yukina had moved into years ago to be closer to Kisa. When the landlord that lived in the adjacent unit had passed away, Kisa and Yukina had made the decison to purchase both units and live together, not for the space, but because the walls in Kisa’s apartment and Yukina’s had continued to be too thin for the two men. Upon moving in Kisa had surprised Yukina by converting one of the rooms into an art space for Yukina’s use. It was then, that Yukina knew it was time to propose.
Securing enough art jobs through graduate school left Yukina with a solid reputation where work was now steady for him, so a year after graduating, Yukina was finally able to buy Kisa-san a ring and proposed to him in the tatami room of the home they shared together. Kisa had of course blushed and yelled that Yukina was being ridiculous, even catching Yukina off guard by tearing up before saying yes. Yukina had never been happier in his life. The sex afterwards had been even more incredible than usual, but when Yukina woke up, he found an unfamiliar ring on the fourth finger of his own left hand. He had looked up to find Kisa awake and looking at him. Yukina was so surprised that he could only look at his fiancé with shock on his face.
“You’re not the only one who thought about the two of us getting married.” Kisa had said in a barley audible voice with beautiful blush and his big round chocolate eyes unable to look at Yukina. They made love again that morning, slow and long, just basking in the feeling of being together.
That had been about a week ago, their lives going on as they normally did. They had both told their families respectivley about the proposal, both sets of families excited about the news to varying degrees, namely Kisa’s older brother claiming that Yukina still wasn’t good enough for Kisa, but that if Kisa was happy then he would give his blessing, not that Kisa had asked for it.
Today, Yukina’s family was in town, as was Kisa’s brother and they were all going to meet up to get introduced and celebrate.
“Were you drawing?” Kisa asks, drawing Yukina away from his thoughts and back to the man in front of him. Kisa was eyeing the sketchbook on the table. Yukina wondered if he was remembering that time, when they were in this cafe and Yukina had begun sketching a display case for the manga Kisa was editing, only to use that sketchbook to block their faces as he leaned in to kiss the beautiful man in front of him.
“I was.” He answered with a smile.
Kisa didn’t ask anymore continuing to drink from Yukina’s cup of coffee, and Yukina couldn’t help the growing smile that graced his face from the domesticity of the scene before him, Kisa choosing that moment to look up and place a hand in front of his face as he often did when he looked at Yukina for too long. The problem was that it also blocked Kisa’s face from Yukina’s view, so he grabbed the raised hand and held it between them on the table, thumb naturally running against the ring that was there. Yukina continued to hold his hand as the waitress came by again and Yukina placed an order for a second cup of coffee. Kisa looked away with an unmistakable redness across his cheeks but he didn’t pull his hand away.
They sat like that for the next while, speaking amicably and holding hands before it was time for them to go and meet up with their families. But when Kisa took his hand back he sat there for a moment looking down and a bit forlorn. Yukina could guess it was in trepidation for the family meeting ahead and the anxiety of it going over well. Yukina however, also found himself glued to his seat, taken aback as he was struck with the reality of how fortunate he was to have the person in front of him in his life, that Kisa was going to always be in his life as his husband.
With a smile overtaking his face once more, and while Kisa was still unaware, Yukina leaned forward and kissed his fiancé on the mouth. There was no sketchbook blocking them from view this time and Yukina could barley register what sounded like a tray of cups falling, but he paid it no mind as he kissed the love his life.
Kisa who would usually push Yukina away and scowl him for doing something like this in publicly, relaxed into Yukina’s body and kissed his fiancé back. He decided that, at least for today he would let Yukina get away with the open affection.
After all, it was a special day. Everyday with Yukina was a special day.
