Lost And Found

Summary:

This story is about two girls who used to be partners in crime back in high school. They would often hang out and had a secret relationship. But they suddenly got separated into two roads, yet ended up in the same path.

Notes:

I used the same characters from my previous work called "Who Is She?" in this work, this story and "Who Is She?" doesn't have the same storyline and has no connect with each other. I used the same names in this work but note that the personality of the characters in "Who Is She?" is not the same as their personality in this work.

Work Text:

There was once a girl named Homura, she grew up alone because her parents passed away when she was young.

Homura has wanted to start a band. She plays the bass.

She was a teenager who’s always getting in trouble.

Incomplete uniform, smoking behind the school, cutting classes.

But she didn't do it alone, she had a partner in crime.

Her partner was a girl as well, her name was Rei.

Rei wanted to start a band too, she drums.

She enjoyed listening to Homura play the bass.

But they were only two, they couldn't start a band.

Rei was a runaway. She had enough of her alcoholic father that doesn't even do anything for her. She learned how to live by herself at a very young age.

Rei smokes with her whenever they ditched class, packets of cigarettes in their jacket’s pocket.

Rei is always there to take care of Homura, because she always gets into fights.

“Fighting after school again?” Rei sighs, applying medicine on Homura’s wound.

“They started it. Not me.” Homura replies, scowling.

“Jeez. What are you gonna do without me?” Rei wraps bandages around Homura’s wound.

Homura was silent.

“Thank you.” She looks down on Rei who’s kneeling down to heal her wound.

“It's nothing much.” Rei smiles and gently pats Homura's thigh.

“Thank you for always helping me and taking care of me whenever I’m.. messed up.” Homura sighs.

“You're always welcome.” Rei smiles at her.

They had a strong bond and had a good friendship, but they were more than friends.

They did things that friends don't.

Sharing the same cigarette, kissing in secret, doing dirty things in private.

Friends don't do that.

They decided to have a relationship, but they kept it a secret to avoid issues.

Homura had a best friend named Kyo. A fellow trouble maker, but a retired one. Kyo changed, most likely for a girl.

Kyo was one of Homura’s most trusted friends, she always vents and rants to him.

Well, ofcourse, Rei had a best friend too.

Rei’s best friend was Akiho. The president of the student council. Akiho had the hots for Kyo, who knows, maybe Akiho was the girl that Kyo changed for.

Homura and Rei didn't tell each other about their best friends. Nobody knows why.

Homura and Rei would go to the park and go to their secret spot where they hang out and spend time alone together.

They tell jokes, laugh, and smile together.

“Hey, Homura.” Rei says, placing a cigarette in between her lips and inhaling it.

“Yeah?” Homura asks with a cigarette in between her fingers and exhaling smoke. She raises an eyebrow at Rei.

“Do you think we’re still together in another universe? Will our relationship still be a secret there?” Rei asks curiously. She flicks the cigarette to the ground.

“What made you ask that?” Homura chuckles and hands Rei a cigarette packet.

“Curiosity.” Rei shrugs and grabs a cigarette, pulling out a lighter from her pocket to light it up.

Homura took a while to respond.

“I don't know.” Homura sounded hesitant with her answer. Rei noticed it, but decided not to say anything about it.

I don't think we’ll last in this universe. I’m fucked up right now, Rei. I wish I could tell you. Homura thought to herself.

Time passed by.

They grew up, they're adults now. Their relationship wasn't the same.

People change, others do it for the better, while others worsen.

Take Homura as an example. She changed. She managed to join a band, she still plays the bass.

While Rei on the other hand, still plays the drums but decided not to join a band anymore. She wanted to write instead. She writes poems. It's weird how a drummer could change into a writer or a poet.

They had different hobbies now, and something in their relationship changed. Homura barely had time for Rei. She's always telling Rei that she's practising with her band or on a gig.

“Sorry, I can't hang out today either. Our band is really busy right now and so am I. Sorry, I promise I’ll make it up to you.” Homura says over the phone.

Sorry’. Rei always hears that from Homura.

Cancelled dates, plans that they never got to do.

Rei sighs. She knows that she should say something. But she doesn't want to.

“It's fine. Just tell me when you're available next time.” She replies.

She knows that she should've told Homura to at least give some time for her. But she didn't want to. She's scared that her words might ruin their relationship.

There was silence. A loud silence.

“I have to go now. I love you.” Homura breaks the silence.

You always have to go. When will you ever give time for me? Rei thought to herself.

“I love you too.” Rei replies. The line ended.

Rei tries to distract herself by writing.

One day, Rei noticed something off about Homura.

Rei is always quick to notice if there's a problem or something off about her partner. She wonders if Homura ever notices her.

Homura was often leaving at night, drinking, and then knocking on Rei’s door at midnight.

She's drunk. She's always been drinking. Rei found out that Homura’s band mates ghosted her.

She's sleeping on Rei’s couch. Rei doesn't know how many times this has happened.

She kind of feels bad for Homura. But she also feels bad for herself.

Rei covers Homura with a blanket and sighs.

“Seriously, what exactly can you do without me?” Rei whispers.

It went on like that, until one time, Homura finally stopped.

She suddenly texts Rei on a random day.

“Can we talk? I’ll come over.” Homura sends a message to Rei.

Rei was quick to reply. “Okay.”

It didn't take long, Homura was at her door. She opens the door and lets Homura in. They both sit on the couch.

Rei decided to start.

“So-”

She was interrupted.

“I’m sorry.”

Homura blurts out.

“I've been pretty fucked up lately and I feel like I’m being a burden to you.”

Silence.

“It's fine. I’m always here whenever you're messed up right?” Rei says, breaking the silence.

“It's not. You see- ever since I got into a band all I did was cancel our plans and barely give time to you. I mean- you did a lot of things for me and I couldn't even give you enough time. You've given me a lot and–” Homura stammers. Her voice is shaky, as if she's about to cry.

“I never knew you thought of me.” Rei sighs.

“Do you even know how many times I've overthinked, cried, and worried for you?” Rei sniffles. She's crying. Homura made her cry.

“I didn't mean to, I’m sorry.. I’m just.. not in the right condition right now. I’m so sorry.. I’m making you cry. It makes you cry whenever you give your love to me like this..” Homura apologises. Her eyes are getting teary.

“Rei I don't want to say this but I don't think we're working out.” Homura admits. Rei pauses.

“What do you mean? Make it work then!” Tears fell from Rei’s eyes.

“I’m fucked up, Rei. I won't do any good to you. Please, Rei. I don't deserve you. You deserve someone better than me.”

Homura was crying too.

“Then be better for me!” Rei shouts.

“I’m trying, okay? But I just- I can't right now. There's just so much going on and I..” Homura is a crying mess.

“Then I’ll wait until you're okay! We don't have to break it up. I’ll keep taking care of you until you get better.. Please..” Rei tries to save it.

“Homura please, I love you..” Rei pleaded.

“Please let me go, Rei..” Homura begs.

“I’m sorry. I’m.. I have to leave.” Homura stands up and turns her back.

Rei wanted to grab Homura’s arm. Make her stay. But Homura was already outside her door.

It happened so fast. It's like it was that simple to just leave.

A year has passed since their break up.

Rei still hasn't forgotten about Homura.

She's still waiting for her even after a year.

Nobody knows how much she wanted to chat or go see Homura to ask her how she's doing.

She wonders if Homura still thinks of her.

Homura has gotten better.

She does in fact still think about Rei.

But the only thing that didn't change is the way she misses Rei.

Everytime she goes outside, there's always someone who looks or acts like Rei.

Everything is reminding her of Rei.

It's like torture, each seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and a year without Rei has been tough.

All she could think about was Rei.

She was then interrupted by a notification on her phone.

“Hey, I’m at a BBQ restaurant and drinking with Akiho. Come over?” It was Kyo.

Homura replied, “Alright, on my way.”

She finished dressing up and revs up her motorcycle.

It didn't take long until she arrived at the BBQ restaurant. She parked her motorbike at the nearest parking lot and took off her helmet, placing it on the side mirror.

She walks in, and is greeted by Kyo and Akiho waving, she walks up to their table and takes a seat in front of Kyo. Akiho and Kyo are sitting side by side. It's a table with four seats.

“Aren't we gonna order yet?” Homura asks, looking at the pair.

“Oh, Akiho invited a friend over but her friend isn't here yet.” Kyo explains.

Homura nods and waits as well.

Minutes passed and Homura decided to go to the restroom, she excused herself as she sat up.

She didn't take long to come back, but while she was walking back to their table, she saw a familiar figure sitting beside her seat.

Rei? Homura thought to herself. She shakes her head and sits and walks to their table.

“So Rei, this is Kyo’s friend, Homura.” Akiho introduces them to each other.

Rei turns her head to Homura when she hears Akiho mention Homura's name.

“Rei?!”

“Homura?!”

They said in sync, a surprised expression in their faces.

“..Do you know each other?” Kyo asked, he's confused.

Rei elbows Homura’s side, telling her to sit. Homura sits down and Rei explains.

“Well we were friends back then.” Rei says nervously. “Right, Homura?” Rei pinches Homura’s side.

“Y-Yeah! Friends.” She nods.

“Okay?” Akiho raises an eyebrow, suspicious about the pair.

They ordered and started to eat. Rei ordered a lot of beer. Akiho was confused why Rei ordered alot.

Homura takes some of the cans that Rei ordered and takes sips, while Rei on the other hand, is chugging it down.

It didn't take a while until it got dark and Akiho and Kyo had to go.

“Sorry guys, Akiho is pretty drunk right now and we need to get home.” Kyo apologises with an arm over his neck, supporting the drunk Akiho.

“It's fine, be safe.” Homura smiles and waves goodbye. She's left with a wasted Rei.

“Wake up.” Homura shakes Rei. “Akiho and Kyo left.”

Rei groans and opens her eyes. She grabs another can of beer but Homura takes it from her hand and puts it away.

“You're drinking too much.” Homura sighs.

“I never said that when you went home drunk every night.” Rei says angrily.

Homura was taken aback by the response, but she didn't say anything back because it was true.

“You're too drunk. I’ll take you home.” Homura stood up, but when she did, she felt a pinch on her sleeve.

“Take me to your house.” Rei mumbles.

Homura couldn't refuse. She leaves the restaurant with Rei.

She puts the helmet on Rei and tells Rei to ride behind her and hold onto Homura’s waist.

Homura revs her motorcycle and starts driving. She felt Rei squeezing her. She missed Rei’s touch.

They arrive at Homura’s house, she takes Rei inside and opens the lights. She lays her down in her bedroom.

She lays down beside Rei and sighs. She then felt Rei hugging her. Homura hugs her back.

“Are you awake?” Homura cups Rei’s cheeks to take a look at Rei’s half lidded eyes.

“Mmm..” Rei mumbles and looks at Homura’s lips. She missed her lips.

She wanted to kiss her. So she did, pressing her lips on Homura’s.

Homura kisses back and pulls away.

Rei has fallen asleep again, it didn't take long for Homura to drift off to sleep too.

Morning comes and Homura wakes up, Rei isn't beside her anymore.

She stands up and goes downstairs to see Rei who was about to leave.

“Can you stay for a while?” Homura asks.

“Why? Did you stay when I begged you to stay?” Rei says angrily.

“I still love you, Rei..” Homura holds Rei’s arm.

“Homura I can't.. You need to let me go..” Rei frowns.

“I have to leave.” Rei swats Homura’s hand and walks out of the door.

This time, one of them finally chases the other.

Homura puts on her shoes and goes outside, Rei is already gone. But then she remembers their secret spot.

She rides her motorcycle and goes to their spot, she parks her bike and puts her helmet on the side mirror.

She walks in their secret spot in the park and sees Rei. She calls out her name. Rei was crying.

“Homura, I gave you everything I had.” Rei sniffles.

“Then let me give it back to you, let me give back all the things I couldn't give you back then.” Homura’s eyes are teary.

“I know I was wrong, but I won't let you down.” Tears fell from Homura’s eyes.

“I promised you that I’d always look out for you but I just- I can't anymore..” Rei sobs.

“Rei this isn't the end of our story. I’m not letting it end yet.” Homura begs.

“Homura we already ended. You decided to leave.” Rei turns her back to Homura.

“I’m making you cry again.” Homura mumbles to herself.

“I decided to leave because I wanted to change and become a better person for you but I couldn't stay because I’ll hurt you.” Homura hugs Rei from behind.

“Don't make it harder than it already is, Homura.” Rei tries to wipe off her own tears, but it wouldn't stop.

“I wanna go back to those times where I had you by my side.” Homura whispers, her head buried down on Rei’s neck. She's sobbing.

“If we go back, are you going to be by my side?” Rei asks.

“I promise you.” Homura sighs

Rei laughs, wiping off her own tears.

“What exactly can you do without me?” She smiles at Homura.

They're two people with their own roads. Two different roads, but they still went to the same path.

Rei and Homura had lost each other throughout their journey, but in the end, they found each other once again.
