Always Best Friends

Summary:

Nancy has a surprise for you when it's your birthday.

Work Text:

The darkness of winter had finally stepped aside and let the spring in. You could see nature slowly coming alive again, flowers blooming, bathing in the sun. And as you sat at the park and looked at children playing, you saw Nancy slowly approaching you. She had a bright smile on her face as she clutched her book against her chest and her bag swinging by her side, and a smile was spread on your face too upon seeing her.

“Happy birthday!” she cheerfully exclaimed and dug up a small gift box from her bag, giving out a giggle as you let out a surprised gasp. “It’s nothing too great, but I thought you might like it.”

“N-Nancy, you didn’t have to buy me anything,” you stuttered but Nancy just shook her head and sat down next to you.

“I know. But I wanted to.” She bit her lip. “Open it, I want to see your reaction.”

You knew arguing with her about getting you a gift wouldn’t get you anywhere, so you turned your gaze back to your gift and slowly pulled the colourful ribbon tied around a polka-dotted box, making it untie itself and letting you peek inside. It was a necklace, that very necklace you had admired at a shop weeks earlier. It glimmered beautifully in the sun as you slowly lifted it up from its soft packing and touched the decoration in it.

“Nancy, this has surely cost a fortune!” you exclaimed, Nancy laughed and shook her head.

“If you ask me, it was underpriced. It’s handmade, so even if it doesn’t have any jewels in it, it’s…” Nancy’s speech was cut off as you had hug attacked her, which got her laughing again at your excitement. “You’re one of my best friends. You’ve always been that, ever since we first played together in that playground.”

You chuckled and squeezed her harder. “I don’t understand how on earth have I gotten a friend like you, Nancy.”

You felt Nancy’s hair brushing against your ear slightly as she fixed her position while hugging you. “I could say the same about you.”
