Chapter 1: the man in the purple shirt

Chapter Text

You had just started your usual shift at the famous Fredbear's Family Diner. The job wasn't anything special and paid minimum wage, but it could be worse. Unlike everyone else there, you didn't clean tables or cook pizzas in the oven. You had the wonderful job of working at the drinks bar, serving everything from fresh smoothies and juices to coffee and tea for exhausted parents. You didn't work at the bar alone, your colleague (and annoying friend) Romeo was there to keep you company. Unfortunately, he had somewhat of an eccentric personality. It didn't really bother you though, anything to keep the day from becoming dull, and you really did adore him. How he got the job, however, was beyond you.

The day was dragging on, and as usual, kids, and even some parents, were crying in frustration, pizzas were stuck in the oven, orders were delayed, and you were probably making your 100th chocolate milkshake of the day. The movements were so ingrained within you that you barely had to look at what you were doing as you continued to talk to Romeo while he pointed to a kid who had fallen over, holding back a laugh. Your eyes immediately widened as you elbowed him in the ribs while handing the woman in front of you the drink and apologizing as she left.

"Romeo, you idiot, that was the kid's mother in front of us," you whisper-screamed while also holding back your own laughter.

"Don't look now, but she is dragging him out of the restaurant," Romeo sighed, pointing once again to the scene unfolding. It was never a pretty sight watching another child throw a tantrum as they were forced to leave their beloved animatronics.

As the lunch hour came to a close and the atmosphere dulled you decided to take your break. You untied your hair, massaging your scalp a little as you wandered into the staff room. You weren’t paying attention to your surroundings humming a soft tune when you suddenly slammed into a hard surface and stumbled back a little. I don’t remember there being a wall here.

You looked up only to see a tall man staring down at you looking annoyed. You had never seen him around before, then again you hadn’t been working here for that much longer than a month, perhaps he was new? You noted his appearance, brown hair, tired eyes and a purple shirt? Employees here usually wear red though, why is this guy in the staff room? You decided that discovering the identity of the mystery man was above your pay grade then realised you had been staring at him for an indecent duration of time.

“Oh uh, sorry I wasn’t looking, my bad,” you offered an awkward smile. He rolled his eyes clearly annoyed by your presence and you weren’t exactly sure what to do. He was blocking the door into the staff room and didn’t seem to be moving. His eyes narrowed into a glare as he looked down at you. “Shouldn’t you be working?”. You couldn't believe it, here you were trying to take a break and this random guy was telling you to get back to work. Who did he think he was? Your eyes wandered over to the clock on the wall and to your utter dismay your break was over, you couldn’t believe it. You took in a deep breath and sighed “I suppose I should be” you muttered under your breath. “I guess I will go then, you know… back to work” You gritted your teeth turned and left as you felt his eyes watch your figure disappear through another door.

When you moved back behind the bar you gave Romeo a pointed look which he understood immediately. “What happened to you?” he sighed pouring a drink. “Some guy in the staff room completely stole my break” you complained pulling your hair back into the ponytail. “Oh yeah, how so?” Asked Romeo “Well I will admit I bumped into him first” You held up your hands “BUT, the guy just stood in the middle of the doorframe not moving and I couldn’t get into the staff room” You were waving your hands around as you explained the whole story. “And then he was all like ‘go work’ with this intense glare and by the time I was about to explain that I was on break and needed to get into the staff room, my break was OVER so I just came back” You sighed in defeat. “Wow interesting guy,” Romeo said unbothered, it’s not like you lost an arm it was just one small break.

You began to describe the guy to Romeo since you found it odd he didn’t have a uniform or name tag or anything really and you saw Romeo’s eyes widen in horror. It seemed like he was trying to get you to be quiet but you ignored him. “And yeah overall he was just very intense” You stopped with a small nod, content with your description.

“Intense huh?” You jumped at a voice behind you, and turning round you saw none other than the mystery man leaning against the counter behind you. “What are you-“ he cut you off “William Afton, co-owner of the Fredbear establishment” he began, you felt his eyes travel up and down, taking in your appearance and you thought you saw a hint of a smile tugging at his the corner of his lips. Your eyes widened as you realised you had been bitching about one of your bosses right in front of him. “I will be seeing you later…” he looked at your name tag “y/n” he read testing how your name sounded on his tongue. And with that, he left and you turned to Romeo “Oh my god” you looked at him in defeat “what have you done this time” he laughed at you unable to take anything seriously.

You were dreading the end of the day and mostly just kept your head down in an attempt not to cause any more trouble. As the final minutes approached you felt your stomach turn. You really didn’t not want to be fired.

Maybe he is nice? Who am I kidding what I did was way out of line. But I didn’t know omg I have never seen him in my life. It’s not my fault he is all secretive and never comes out of his office or wherever it is he keeps himself hidden away all day every day. I mean how is it that I have been working here for over a month now and I have never seen him? Honestly, that’s on him not me. He, is the absent ‘boss’. Ugh, but it doesn’t matter at the end of the day he can still fire me.

You walked into the locker room to collect your things with absolutely no sign of your so-called boss. Were you meant to find him? Had he forgotten? Regardless, you were growing more and more anxious in anticipation. You arrived at your locker, it was quite dark in the room as the lights dimmed and you could hear the sounds of your co-workers packing their things and heading home. You took a deep breath opened your locker and collected your things as well as your thoughts when you felt something brush up your arm. Turning around you saw a tall figure with that familiar intense aura.

“Mr Afton” you slightly jumped “Apologies, I didn’t recognise you at first, it was Mr Emily who had given me the job” you explained crossing your fingers in the hope he would overlook your incompetency. He crossed his arms giving a soft hum expecting you to continue.

Uhhh I haven’t really prepared more. I honestly didn’t expect to get this far .

You explained how you knew his name but had never seen him around before and that you had been tired today and really looking forward to the break. No matter how much you babbled, however, he simply continued to stare down at you as if he wasn’t even listening to what you were saying. All be it your excuses were feeble, he could at least pay attention. His gaze had softened from a glare to more of an amused, tired stare.

He interrupted you. How old are you?” He asked completely ignoring everything you had just explained. “Oh uh,” you were taken aback. “I’m 21” you said avoiding eye contact. You knew you were young and prayed he would take pity on you. He let out another soft hum as if carefully considering your answer. “I vaguely remember Henry saying he had hired some girl” although it sounded more like he was speaking to himself than to you. You weren’t exactly sure what to do now, If he was going to fire you then he would have done it by now but he wasn’t letting you leave either.

You noticed everyone else had left the room, probably because the so-called ‘mean boss’ had entered. “Mr Afton“ you began but were interrupted by the entrance of the boss you did know. “William, you’re not keeping our new employee, are you?” Henry raised an eyebrow and sounded almost worried. It couldn’t be, there was no reason for him to be so concerned. You looked between the two men unsure of what to do. “Wouldn’t dream of it” sighed Mr Afton as he pushed off the wall gesturing for you to leave. You gave a quick wave goodbye and left as you heard the muffled voice of the two men fade away behind you.

By the time you got home, it was late but your mind couldn’t stop wandering back to Mr Afton. He certainly was an odd man and never even scolded you for your behaviour, not that you were complaining of course, it still made you feel uneasy though, the way he seemed to look through you rather than at you. You lay your things down and changed into your pyjamas, the apartment was quiet. Kiomi and Alice must be asleep. They always did seem to be either passed out, leaving or not here in the first place, not that it bothered you, you enjoyed having the place to yourself. You checked your watch, it was around 11 and you had finished going over your coursework for the day. Once again you had another shift tomorrow, upon realising this you went straight to bed, curling up with your cat, praying for a drama-free shift for once.
