in a winter mood

Summary:

“It’s kinda nice, though,” Kevin spoke softer, a little more serious this time, “that we’ve come so far from that that you can feel cold like this.”

Or

Sami is cold. So cold, in fact, that he crawls into Kevin's sweater. Literally.

Work Text:

Sami’s entire body felt cold.

He heard the shower turn on from the bathroom as he was settling down with his fourth blanket. His eyes were getting droopier as his body warmed up, but he didn’t want to fall asleep until Kevin was beside him.

He watched the snow fall through the bedroom window while he waited. It was comforting. It was familiar. It felt like home.

So, really, it wasn’t doing much to keep him awake.

He sighed with content before closing his eyes.

Just for a minute,” he thought.

Twenty minutes later, he was awoken by the sound of footsteps. His eyes stayed closed until he felt the mattress dip with a presence– Kevin’s

Sami rolled over and shoved his head in the space between Kevin’s chin and neck. A whine escaped his lips as he continued to move his body closer and closer to Kevin until there was no closer to get.

“I’m cold.”

“Oh are you? I couldn’t tell by the five blankets you have piled on top of you right now,” Kevin scoffed teasingly.

“It’s only four,” Sami mumbled.

Four? That makes such a big difference!” Kevin feigned disbelief. “My bad.”

Sami leaned back, only slightly, in order to look into Kevin’s eyes with a dorky grin on his face.

“You have to be nice to me; I have staples in my head! And they’re cold. Which makes me cold.”

He put his head back into the crook of Kevin’s neck, this time throwing a leg around his torso as well.

“And you’re warm,” he spoke into Kevin’s neck, “so you have to keep me warm. It’s, like, the law.”

Kevin felt himself shiver from the movement of Sami’s lips on his neck. He was sure he’d see goosebumps on his arms if the light was on.

“Who says I follow the law?”

Sami simply shushed him, deciding he was too tired to come up with a response and that he’d rather focus on more important things. He wanted to focus on the heat radiating from Kevin’s body due to the hot shower he took and the warm clothes he pulled from the dryer. He wanted to focus on the comforting smell created by the mixture of their body wash, their laundry detergent, and Kevin’s cologne. He wanted to focus on Kevin’s breathing, trying to match it as he laid beside him. He wanted to focus on the thumps of Kevin’s heartbeat that he could feel from the close proximity. Really, he just wanted to focus on Kevin.

You see, Sami really missed Kevin. They’re together whenever it’s possible, like when they have days long breaks, when they have show locations close by, or on Christmas. (Even though Sami doesn’t even celebrate Christmas, he still got Kevin a gift, because why would he pass up an opportunity to get Kevin a gift?)

So, yeah, they’ve seen each other. They just haven’t gotten time to spend with each other without the feeling of having to leave each other soon weighing them down. In a weird way, Sami is a little glad he got injured, because now he doesn’t have to have that feeling until he’s healed.

“You asleep?” Kevin whispered softly, interrupting Sami from his thoughts.

Sami made an “mm-mm” sound before responding, “Still cold.”

He moved his body down as he buried himself deeper into the blankets. Only his head was left peeking out, laying on Kevin’s chest.

“Sweater seems cozy,” Sami murmured.

Kevin was wearing a navy blue pullover sweatshirt. It was a few years old and a size or two too big. It was cozy, which is why he had thrown it in the dryer with his last wash to wear after his shower. It was part of the reason he was so warm, while Sami was whining about the cold in a t-shirt. He didn’t blame him, though, knowing that Sami felt restrained wearing a long sleeve to bed. It was just one of those sensory things, which Kevin understood completely. Kevin wasn’t even sure he’d leave his own long sleeve on, but he wasn’t quite ready to sleep and wanted to be comfortable until then.

“It’s soft,” Kevin replied.

Sami hummed, and began wordlessly moving himself further down and lifting up the bottom of Kevin’s sweatshirt.

“What are you doing?” Kevin whispered, half-scandalized.

Sami stuck his head into Kevin’s sweatshirt and laid his head onto Kevin’s chest. He sighed, content with the warmth of his body and sweatshirt. He let himself listen to Kevin’s heartbeat for a moment before responding, appreciating it more now that he was closer and only had the thin layer of a t-shirt acting as separation from his chest.

“Making you keep me warm,” he finally stated.

Kevin let out a big laugh, and Sami smiled at the movement he felt beneath him from Kevin’s stomach.

“Don’t laugh! Must I remind you again that my head is cold?” Sami gasped with fake offense.

Kevin put a hand on Sami’s back as his laughter started to die down. Sami felt himself blush, which was silly, really. That was more than normal, but it just felt nice.

“It’s just, you have four blankets. We have heat! We have heat that we can actually turn on. Remember when we couldn’t turn our heat on? Or– or remember when we slept in places with broken heaters because it was all we could afford? And, still, you’re so cold that you’re literally crawling into my sweater.”

Sami groaned into Kevin’s chest, waiting for the teasing to end.

“It’s kinda nice, though,” Kevin spoke softer, a little more serious this time, “that we’ve come so far from that that you can feel cold like this.”

Sami kissed Kevin’s chest, letting his eyes close once again as Kevin began running circles on his upper back.

“I’m moving in here, forever. I’m staying here and you’re just gonna have to figure out how to live with me attached to you. Maybe we can get, like, an adult version of a baby carrier, or something. You think you could carry me around like that?”

“Like, on my chest?” Kevin asked, genuinely trying to understand.

“Probably not all the time. Maybe we could find a sweater with two heads and then I could at least be by your side, leaching off of your body heat. Dunno how we’d work though. I guess we could separate right before a match and then go right back into our two-headed sweater thingy. Of course, then we’d be all sweaty, which means we’d have to shower, and that would take even longer.”

“I guess,” Sami yawned, “I guess it would have to be a sometimes thing. For nights like this, when I’m cold.”

“I guess so,” Kevin chuckled softly.

A few moments of silence passed by, and Kevin could feel Sami’s breathing slowing.

“Sami, my love, you have to come out of there before you fall asleep.”

“No,” Sami whined, dragging out the “oh” sound. “Let me sleep in here.”

Kevin couldn’t see him, but he could hear Sami’s pout.

“You’re gonna suffocate in there.”

“Good,” Sami said stubbornly, clearly too tired to come up with a better response.

Kevin sighed, deciding to let Sami lay there until his face got too warm or until he fell asleep, allowing Kevin to carefully pull him out himself.

As he continued to rub circles onto Sami’s back, Kevin grabbed his phone from the nightstand beside him. He took a picture of the Sami’s head shaped blob beneath his sweatshirt, which he would definitely tease Sami with tomorrow, and went on to play a few rounds of 2048.

Kevin’s heart felt warm.
