Chapter 1: one.

Chapter Text

Your Royal Highness,

I pen this letter with sincere surprise upon receiving the news of our forthcoming union. How utterly delightful it is to have my future determined by what our families have taken upon themselves to orchestrate without the slightest consideration of our own desires. Pray, do not mistake my astonishment for anything less than genuine and kindly forgive my skepticism as I venture into this matrimonial agreement.

I must confess, esteemed prince, that I am intrigued by the enigmatic nature of our union. While I am sure that your revered family holds the noblest of intentions and that you possess all the qualities befitting a prince of your distinguished lineage, one cannot help but wonder about the underlying reasons and motivations behind the fate bestowed upon us.

Forgive me, oh noble Prince Miya, if my musings appear unwarranted. It is only natural for a discerning mind to question the circumstances surrounding such a significant decision. While I have yet to ascertain the depths of your character, I shall approach this union with all the enthusiasm I can muster for it is our duty to embrace this alliance with grace and dignity.

Let us be ever mindful of the delicate balance between duty and personal happiness.

With highest regards,

Prince Sakusa Kiyoomi

Just as he finishes reading, Atsumu grabs the nearest thing to him and throws it at his cackling brother.

“How-” Osamu ducks and the pillow lands near the fireplace shit that was close “How did ya managed ta offend him without even meeting ‘im?”

A groan leaves Atsumus lips as he clutches the letter in his hand, he’s temped to rip it apart and let the pieces fly with the breeze to the fire but the last thing his ego needs is to give Osamu that satisfaction.

Or his future husband, apparently.

He lets go of the rumbled paper, setting carelessly back into the bureau to deal with later. He paces back and forth the length of his bed, hand reaching to his face, fingers worrying his lower lip relentlessly and somehow at the same time mumbling rapidly.

Osamu watches in amusement on his spot by the fire, lounging unceremoniously on the couch situated in the middle of the room, idly glad they’re not children anymore. The scolding they’d get for their current attitude fresh in his mind, how it surely would have last weeks of etiquette and posture classes added to their daily schedules as it had multiple times in the past.

He snorts when he hears Atsumus words of why does this keeps happening to me between the rest of the gibberish “As if anything like this has ever happened to ya before” a mischievous grin splays across his face as his brother startles and glares at him “Oh c’mon Tsumu, it’s not the end of the world, you’ll be fine”

The frustration is clear in his voice when he answers “Easy fer ya to say Samu!” Huffing and puffing has been his twins response to anything that displeases him since before thet even knew what that word meant, so the display isn't surprising at all “I’ve just read his letter and it’s like he’s trying the be cordial while subtly insulting me at the same time. I can’t even imagine what he’ll be in person”

Osamu smirks “Well, Tsumu, maybe he’s just trying to impress ya with his ability to be infuriatingly polite” the blond moves again, this time getting closer and kicking his legs of the couch to sit by his twin side. Osamu chooses to let it slide this time and playfully nudges his side “Don’t ya worry, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunities to give him a taste of his own medicine” The tiniest smile grazes Atsumus lips as he bats his brothers hands away, “it's just...”

A shadow crosses his face and he takes a deep breath, trying to calm his racing thoughts. He knows he cant let his frustration get the best of him, specially when it comes to his family's reputation and the delicate alliance between the kingdoms. But the news of his arranged marriage to the Prince of Itachi’s Empire, Sakusa Kiyoomi, someone he has never met and who seems to despise the idea as much as he does, is difficult to swallow.

He sighs looking at his hands “...you have Sunarin, ya don’t have to worry about being forced into an arranged marriage, you have someone who loves ya, someone who you choose to be by yer side that chooses you back”

Osamu’s expression softens, understanding the weight of his brother predicament “I know it’s not easy fer you” His hand goes to his shoulder and squeezes when the other looks back at him in what he hopes it’s a comforting gesture “I can’t pretend to fully understand ya, and I’m truly sorry I can’t be of more help…”

“-But it’s our duty to think of the bigger picture” Atsumu sounds resigned as he interrupts and it weights heavily on his heart, knowing what he is missing, knowing that this all means his brother will have to leave the kingdom to be by his husband’s side while Osamu remains as the only heir to the throne. Wishing, night and day, that he could have done more. “Our kingdom needs this alliance, and it pains me how the length of your sacrifice far succeeds mine”

He pulls him by the grip on his shoulder and half-hugs him, pressing against his side “But I promise we’ll find a way to make the best of this situation. We’ve always been there for each other, and I won't let this be any different.”

Atsumu sags into the awkward embrace, head tilting slightly to rest on the youngers shoulder “Thank ya Samu” I don’t know what I’d do without you.

As the day passes, a plan starts forming in Atsumus mind. He may not have control over the circumstances, but he can control his own actions. He’ll find a way to make his voice heard, to ensure that his future isn’t dictated solely by the whims of their fathers.

Prince Sakusa Kiyoomi,

Well well well, aren’t you a breath of fresh air? Your letter has left me quite amused. The skepticism rolling from your words is truly a sight to behold.

I must admit that your surprise at this arranged union mirrors my own sentiments. You see, Dear Prince Kiyoomi, the decision to unite our kingdoms through matrimony was not one that I had anticipated and while I might not fully understand our respective Kings reasoning, I can say that, at least, I know I can trust my father’s judgment.

As you must understand I initially had reservations about this arrangement as well, the idea of being bound to someone I barely know, without having a say in the matter, seemed unjust. However, as a prince, I have come to understand that the needs of our kingdom often supersede our personal desires.

In spite of my apprehensions, I have chosen to embrace this union with an open mind. I believe that our shared commitment to duty and the welfare of our people will guide us through the challenges that lie ahead. Perhaps, in time, we may even discover unexpected virtues and connections within this arrangement.

As we navigate this path together, I cannot help but feel a desire to meet you in person. There is an undeniable authenticity that lies in face-to-face interactions.

Perhaps, in due time, we may have the opportunity to sit down and truly understand one another.

In solemn solidarity,

Prince Miya Atsumu
