Chapter One: New Life, New Friends
Yukito was honestly confused, one moment he was in Unova talking to Ash, his recently received Tepig, about how cool his gym was going to be. He was showing the small little fire pig all the different sketches, each one getting a squeal of excitement from Ash. The next Yukito was sitting on the side of the street in casual clothes. Looking down he saw that his backpack was still the same, though not as full as before. Picking it up Yukito fished through noticing that all of his camping gear was gone as well as his Pokemon supplies. Instead there was a Nintendo DS with the game Pokemon White in its cartridge slot. Frowning, Yukito moved on before finding his wallet with his ID inside, instead of a Trainer’s ID it was an ID for a place called: Karakura Town and he was going to Mashiba Middle School. “Hmmm, looks like I’m a transfer student to a junior high High school. Sweet first year!”
Yukito got to his feet as his indigo eyes took in his surroundings. His blue and green hair sticking up everywhere, though hanging around his shoulders.
“Well, time to explore Ash." Yukito said looking next to him but his Tepig wasn’t there. “Ash? Where did you go?”
“Not here." a girl around his age said as she approached him, she had light purple, though it was a lavender color, hair and dark indigo eyes, similar to Yukito. Though she wore big circular wire framed glasses, on her hands were thick gloves over her clothes. “Trust me, I even checked for my Pokemon. Young dragon types are so fickle and I was worried, being in such a new place after all. I am Izumi Azami, it’s nice to meet you.”
“Where are you from?” Yukito asked, with his natural bored expression on his face figuring she would leave him alone but the thought that she trained dragon type Pokemon intrigued him.
“Hmm? Oh not near any of the main cities or part of the gym tour.” Azami replied as she took off her gloves. “It’s called Sylphridge, more up north in Unova, but perfect for our town.”
“Wait, you’re from Unova?” Yukito perked up with that. “Hmmm, Sylphridge, I’ll have to look it up when we get back. I’m Kohaku Yukito by the way.”
“Excuse me, has anyone seen my Pokemon?” a girl, who was rather tall and boyish, spoke, she had long green hair, tanned skin, and teal eyes. “I can’t find my Snivy.”
Like Yukito, the rest, including what appeared to be a rather sassy male rolling his eyes at them.
“Alright, let’s do a roll call.” Yukito said as Azami eyed him. “I’m Kohaku Yukito. Future fire type gym leader in Unova. Twelve years old.”
“Izumi Azami.” Azami replied, realizing quickly what he was doing. “I live with my grandparents raising dragon type Pokemon in Sylphridge located in Unova. Twelve as well.”
“Himura Koharu, born in Lavender Town, Kanto.” Koharu answered, flipping his long black hair over his shoulder as he eyed them with ice blue eyes. Yukito realized that he was quite androgynous looking. “However I moved to Sinnoh recently and am now determined to become the best Pokemon Contest Contestant there is as well as a fashion designer. Same with the age.”
“That is very admirable.” the tallest out of the group said before looking at them. “I am Hino Komorebi, I’m twelve, my goal is to become a grass type trainer. I am from Castelia, from Unova. It is an honor to meet everyone. Twelve, though I know I don’t look it.”
“So I am the only one from Kanto.” sighed Koharu before looking at his hands. “So, what do we do now?”
“Well there is an address on our student ID.” Azami said as she examined her student ID. “Hmmm, I think we should check this out. It’s almost like someone has been preparing for us to be here.”
“Sounds like a trap." muttered Koharu, but Komorebi was the first person who started walking through the streets of the town. Koharu looked at his student ID. “Karakura Town." he muttered before following along. “Hmmm, sounds like a place that is in dire need of beauty.”
The house that they were led to was a two story rather moderate sized home with a large sized yard. The nameplate in front of the gate read: “H”.
“That’s not strange at all.” Koharu uttered sarcastically as he shoved his hand in his pocket before blinking a few times before pulling out a key. His eyes narrowed into a glare before he walked gracefully up to the front door and unlocked it while Yukito checked the mailbox.
“Well, looks like H-san was the one expecting us." Yukito said as they walked inside. “Alright, what kind of things do we have to know….”
“Hello there! Seems like you made it home safely, welcome to a different universe for a reason: there is a lesson you have to learn. I won’t be telling you what the lesson is, however I do think that it is best to tell you that I merely arranged for you to be here, you were already being isekai’d, I just changed the destination. A huge difference in this universe is, Pokemon is just a game, the date is March 29, 1998, just before the school starts. Welcome to Karakura Town, I think three days is enough time to settle in, but no need to worry, you’ve got all of your academic supplies taken care of including school uniforms. Now time to explain the point system I’ve set up! Each week you will be given tasks to be done, these tasks help you integrate into this world as well as solve the mystery behind it. The points you earn can be spent towards improving the quality of your home as well as the surrounding area, you can also purchase items that will be delivered to your doorstep. So make sure to complete the tasks and save up. So for this week I have a task list for the both of you:
- Do not miss a single day of school
- Study every day
- Do your homework
- Join a club! (This will help with point 5)
- Make friends
- Buy groceries
Now that you’ve got your list, enjoy your life here in Karakura Town. Your personal allowances are determined not just by your status as a Pokemon trainer but what you do as a Pokemon trainer. Like contests, how far your Pokedex has been filled, things like that. Now go out there and have fun!
-H-san.
P.S. Oh yeah! Your Pokemon are safe and sound, time’s just not moving where you guys are from. So when you return it will be like you never left.”
“We were kidnapped.” Koharu said as he walked through the house, Komorebi walked in behind him.
“Maybe, he doesn’t actually he did, but what kind of lesson do we have to learn?” Azami mused as she took the letter from Yukito and looked it over. “Hmmm, this H-san doesn’t want to say, must be something that we know but are either too afraid to work on or a deeply ingrained personality trait.”
“Well considering the decent sized house I would say one of us.” Yukito’s eyes flickered to Koharu. “Has been doing quite well for himself.”
“Thank you.” Koharu just continued walking on. “Though I would say that this is because it needed to house four teenagers. Enough room, but still modest, a good sized yard for washing and drying.”
Yukito followed Koharu up the stairs as he investigated the room. “Two toilets, bathroom, four decently sized rooms. But just the basics for living on our own. It seems like this week’s activities and tasks have already been decided. Joining a club, making friends… Not missing school. I guess this week is fairly school related. Well better join the fashion club, best put my amazing expertise to use and teach these….”
“Why don’t we get groceries first.” Yukito suggested and Koharu glared at him as Yukito walked down the stairs. “I saw some money on the kitchen table.”
“We’re going shopping?” Komorebi asked as she walked up the stairs and Yukito passed her. Komorebi tilted her head to the side before looking at Koharu. “You know your narcissistic act has a time and place, but it’s not going to get away with us here.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” Koharu huffed as he continued to walk down the stairs. Komorebi leaned against the railing. “Himura-san, I have four brothers, each with a different personality. A lot are bold and brash, but sometimes they do it to protect themselves and their family.”
“Good for you.” Koharu continued on his way. Komorebi sighed before following them. Azami was moving out the door, her thick gloves on the table. “Now then, we need to focus on the basics, rice, hygiene supplies, and clothes. Then we divide the chores per room, cooking days are rotated for the four of us. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are rotated. I will handle the washing and drying of the clothes.”
“Makes sense, after all, you claim you are a fashion designer, you would know fabrics better than any of us and the best way to clean them.” Azami said as they set out, Yukito locking the door. “I agree with this.”
“Kohaku-san, you’ve been rather quiet, is everything alright?” Komorebi asked, and Yukito looked at her before nodding. “Yeah, I was just thinking about checking out the local dojos for inspiration for my fire gym." Yukito replied, a blaze in his eyes.
“Do you like fire type Pokemon?” Komorebi asked, and Yukito’s eyes became more passionate.
“Oh yeah! Fire type Pokemon are my favorites, not only are they useful in many different fields but when you are away from the cities.” Yukito began as they explored the town. “Practically and in Pokemon battles they are very versatile despite their weaknesses!”
“So you have a natural RBF.” Koharu mused, cocking his head to the side. “You know… hold on.”
As they walked Koharu produced a hairbrush and a few combs from a satchel. When they reached the grocery store Azami headed in with Komorebi and Koharu fixed Yukito’s hair.
“You look like you just woke up.” Koharu muttered and Yukito tried to look at him but Koharu wouldn’t let him. “No moving, you have such unique hair. It is obvious that you normally keep it straight, however it does have a good hold no matter how you style it. Fair skin lightly freckled from your journey, the blue and green combination in your hair, your indigo eyes are the standout feature! So we will head to a department store for the clothes and hygiene supplies. Gym leaders are not just their Pokemon or the gym, but the way that they look and their flare!”
Yukito hummed as he didn’t move one bit. “So I should also pay attention to my fashion and my appearance as well?”
“Exactly, they are celebrities in their own right.” Koharu nodded his head as he finished fixing Yukito’s hair so it was a little more normal. “For now we will start with it straight instead of bedhead. Then when we get back home I will help you with your style.”
“Himura-san… you are really a nice person.” Yukito told him and Koharu blinked in surprise. “I mean, you have a cold persona but you didn’t have to help me. Thank you.”
“I helped you because your fashion sense is atrocious.” Koharu told him but Yukito could tell that he was taken aback by the earnest appreciation. “Also, I am going to have to help you learn to express the emotions you want to express.”
“Huh? Oh you’re talking about my face… yeah, I’ve had a bit of a problem expressing how I feel.” Yukito said as Koharu took a seat as well. “Except when I am passionate about something. I don’t do it on purpose.”
“Oh I know.” Koharu waved a hand in front of his face. “You think that building character and expression takes a day? No, it takes practice. Think about it, how would the Gym leader of a Fire type Gym act?”
“Passionate, expressive….” Yukito tilted his head to the side, still thinking. “Depends on what battle style I go for as well. Fire is warm, it can make you sleepy, but it can also be fierce and lash out. There are so many gym leaders out there who already show those personality types. Blaine, Flannery, Chili….”
“And what about Kohaku Yukito?” Koharu pressed and Yukito frowned. “Who are you?”
The days passed as the four trainers got settled into their new house. One of their neighbors, Kurosaki Isshin, seemed rather excited to see that they were around the same age as his oldest son. The four trainers hadn’t gone to school before so they were excited that it was their first time. Though they didn’t express it outright. Azami herself had noticed that Koharu’s personality was a front, Komorebi was bold and brash yet she normally kept up a gentle demeanor, Yukito was the most social out of them though others either saw him as a threat or unsociable. Azami herself kept up a rather blunt demeanor, but she wasn’t judging others; she was pointing out the obvious, not even afraid to call out her own flaws.
“Izumi-san, your dragon training gloves are on the table, again.” Koharu called out as he picked up the long thick gloves. “Hmm, the weight of the material and the wear and tear. How many pairs do you go through in a month?”
“Hmm? About a dozen or so.” Azami said as she walked over to grab them. “Dragon types are like any other Pokemon but they are also rather dangerous. My grandparents and I have to go practical over fashionable. Even mixing in the dragon’s scales into the dyes for the fabric of the gloves. It is the same with my glasses, they are custom made so my eyes are protected in case of an accident”
“Smart.” Koharu finished passing it over as Komorebi set down rather large bento boxes on the table. “Do you have archery club activities today, Izumi-san?”
“Of course.” Azami replied as she put her gloves into her school bag. “I do need to keep my skills sharp. Same with yourself Himura-san? Hino-san?”
“Of course, I am in the middle of a fabulous project.” Koharu flipped his hair as Komorebi nodded his head. “Hino-san, you are in the….”
“Gardening club… kind of…” Komorebi said as she tied off the top of the furoshiki around the bento boxes. “The members think that I want to crush the flowers. But I don’t… Erika-san… she had such a beautiful garden in Celadon City.”
“She’s your inspiration, isn’t she?” Koharu asked and Komorebi nodded her head.
“I met her once, her kimono was really pretty and she told me that it would suit me the best.” Komorebi explained. “Since of my body type and boyish looks… Western clothing doesn’t suit me.”
“Nonsense, you still have a femininity about you, I will make sure you know that.” Koharu brushed it off before looking around. “Where is Kohaku-san?”
“Hmm? Oh he went to school early to attend the kendo club practice.” Azami told him as they grabbed their lunches and school bags. “He’s still trying to figure out who he is.”
“Good.” Koharu smirked as he walked out first, the two girls looked at each other before following him.
As the months passed, they found that accumulating the points was easier by completing the weekly tasks. There were free options and one of the options none of them were sure they could trust, the ability to go home. There hadn’t been any major ones assigned just yet. Studying, club activities, getting to know people. Azami herself was participating in a tournament with a rival junior high school. She was sitting quietly before the tournament started gathering her thoughts and her focus. Watching her teammates prepare their bows as well. Her eyes shifted over to the rival school, Seishin Junior High. Azami’s eyes locked with one of their students, Ishida Uryū, if she remembered his name correctly from the club’s analysis board. He was their strongest club member in both precision and draw strength. Azami bowed her head in a silent greeting before returning her gaze forward.
The first round began, Ishida truly was the strongest member on his team, it was clear to Azami that he had been training for a long time with a bow. Though less of a yumi and more of a western bow. It was obvious to Azami. His arrows hitting the center dead on. When it was Azami’s turn she did so with precision. However she could sense something off, like something was there, unseen. For now it was just watching. Azami focused before firing, if there was one thing she wasn’t used to it was the lack of noise and of wind currents. Dragon type Pokemon were loud and she had always learned to blot out the distractions. Yet when there was silence Azami was always on edge. ‘Silence, right before Team Plasma burned down my home and killed my parents. Silence… when Ghetis made plans in his mind because I had called him out on the flaw of his speech.’ Azami’s shot hit the mark, but she still felt off. ‘Guide me Lord, for my mind and heart wanders.’
“A ghost is here.” Koharu said under his breath and Komorebi nodded her head though it was more of an acknowledgement of what he had mentioned.
“You can sense ghosts?” Yukito hissed, and Koharu looked at him as if reminding his classmate that he was from Lavender Town. “Right.”
Koharu’s head tilted to the side before the feeling faded, as if it was taken care of. It worried Koharu, ghosts don’t vanish that easily, especially one that felt so evil like the presence that had been there. Azami’s focus improved after that.
The tournament was over, Seishin had claimed victory by a narrow margin. Azami noticed how sad her clubmates were, it seems as if this was the typical result. Azami’s lips tightened as she stared at Ishida Uryū once again. He was still growing but he was already taller than Azami’s 157 cm, with room to grow he was currently 160 cm. The two clubs bowed to each other, but Azami’s eyes flickered away. She knew that the other junior high school must have trained a lot harder or had been doing archery for longer but it still stung seeing the disheartened looks on her clubmates faces. ‘That’s it, Hino-san and I will bake some cookies for them tonight.’ she thought angrily. ‘This kind of wallowing will not continue!’
Azami was the last to leave, making sure everything was packed. She was walking off of the field when she flinched as the door creaked. “Just the door Azami." she whispered under her breath as she shut it behind her. “Now then, what should I bake for them?”
“I must say.” a voice spoke and Azami almost jumped, but she chose to turn instead facing Uryū. “Your skills are impressive for a junior high school of this caliber.”
“I would appreciate it if you don’t insult my clubmates in a roundabout way, Ishida-san.” Azami huffed as she walked past him.
“It wasn’t my intention to insult them.” Uryū said as he pushed up his glasses. “I was merely pointing out that your skills stand out. The others… have room for growth.”
“Mhm.” Azami huffed before she continued walking. “Shouldn’t you be out celebrating, or studying, or whatever it is you do after a tournament.”
“Wait.” Uryū called out and Azami stilled. “During the tournament, did you sense anything… unusual?”
“Please define unusual, Ishida-san.” Azami told him as she walked up to him. “Because there are some things that others find unusual that I would find quite normal. Like ice cream sundaes with jelly cubes instead of fresh fruit.”
That’s when she caught it, a flicker of irritation. “I’m not talking about trivial matters." he started but Azami held up a hand.
“Ishida-san, I was distracted momentarily, but do not expect it to happen again next time.” Azami told him before turning around and walking away. “And don’t expect such a narrow margin, we will defeat your school next time.”
He grabbed her arm to halt her from leaving. Azami, who had been trained in self defense and used to dealing with rampaging Dragon Type Pokemon who were refused to be given snacks, side stepped, calculated, used momentum, and flipped Ishida over her shoulder onto the ground to not cause as much damage. The two worlds, though similar, had their major differences. Some of it was technology, but most of it came from not relying on ingrained reactions and instincts. Azami had already been on edge and that fine line of control she had ended up snapping. When she came back to her senses, she backed away after releasing his arm. “I’m sorry, Ishida-san, that was not my intention." she said, moving forward a bit, holding out her hand. “I had merely meant to break your grip. I ended up flipping you instead.”
“You are quite strong.” Ishida replied as he got to his feet himself.
“Purely physics.” Azami brushed it off as she made sure he was alright. “Before you ask, I’ve had some self defense training but think of this more like wrestling… large feisty creatures. Like… from those video games, but you know regular animals. If you must know the distraction earlier… I’m distracted by silence. It’s hard for me to focus when it is too quiet, so I thought I heard a noise earlier and I had to confirm if I wasn’t imagining things.”
It wasn’t a complete lie, but Azami didn’t know how this world worked and she didn’t know what the people knew or didn’t know. So she had to be careful with how she worded things.
“Why silence?” Ishida’s question caused her to sigh before turning around.
“Because more often than not, silence is the prelude to things being lost in my life.” Azami told him with sadness in her voice. “I can blot out distractions, but when there is not even a breeze, silence becomes the biggest distraction for me. I must be going, I have school in the morning and I assume you do as well, Ishida-san. Good luck with your studies at Seishin Junior High School.”
“I have come to the conclusion that where the tournament was held is haunted or at the very least it used to be.” Koharu announced at dinner as he ate the sweet and sour pork that Yukito had made. “And that Kohaku-san is obsessed with sweet and sour pork.”
“Not obsessed, I just love it, I’m obsessed with fire type Pokemon, Himura-san.” Yukito pointed out and Koharu rolled his eyes. Azami glanced at Konorebi who always seemed more at home when the two bickered like this. Growing up without a mom, Komorebi was used to scenes like this. It didn’t matter if they were arm wrestling or bickering, Komorebi honestly just appreciated the relaxed environment. It meant that they two trusted each other to let their guard down, even just a little bit.
“Well that would explain what I felt before.” Azami huffed as she ate her salad. “Though it felt more like a pissed off baby Dratini than a mischievous Gastly or a confused Litwick.”
“I would question how you would know, but then I remember how many trainers would love to get their hands on a dragon type Pokemon." Koharu said, Yukito eyeing the pork on his plate. “Don’t you dare.”
Yukito went for it and one of the chopsticks was embedded in the table before anyone could say or do anything. Koharu’s eyes narrowed before Yukito finally backed down.
“Alright, so Izumi-san is a trained archer, Kohaku-san is training in kendo, I know martial arts, favorite being Judo… Himura-san, what are you trained in?” Komorebi asked as Koharu pulled his chopstick out of the table.
“Oh, in case my passion for fashion did work out, I started studying to be a doctor." Koharu said as he looked across the table. “And instead of katana, I trained in the art of Senbon throwing.”
“What did your family do?” Yukito asked in confusion, there was knocking on the door as Komorebi went to open it.
“They run a kendo dojo.” Koharu replied before the booming voice of Kurosaki Isshin boomed through as Komorebi and him wrestled. “Oh great.”
“You won’t make it upstairs before Kurosaki-sensei makes it in here.” Azami told him and Koharu gave her a sharp side eye. Isshin Kurosaki, their neighbor and the owner of the Kurosaki clinic, would always stop by and check on them throughout the week. Especially if they do not greet him or his son Ichigo. Komorebi was the only one who could handle his eccentric personality and would often see him as a father figure. Which ended up with her wanting to wrestle or play fight with him. Since the day they arrived a few months prior to now, if they didn’t greet the head of the Kurosaki household, Koharu would never get a chance to rest after school.
“Who forgot to greet him or his son?” Koharu muttered as Isshin walked in with a huge grin on his face. Koharu had to look away to keep himself from launching at Isshin due to his lack of fashionable clothes. The man was a doctor, yet he always wore either tacky button up shirts or printed shirts with weird sayings on them.
“You are going to have to look eventually.” Azami told him as Komorebi tackled Isshin from behind, keen on continuing the playful brawl. Koharu knew that her gentle demeanor was a way to keep others from seeing her just as a brute. However when she is around people she is comfortable with she allows more of her boyish and brash tendencies shine. ‘She’s kind natured, but in times like these she wants the normalcy of being around people who are like her family. Who doesn't mind it when she wrestles with them. She likes to see everyone smile and is cheerful, but when she needs a break she often hangs around those who are quiet and prefer to read.’ Koharu observed.
“Koharu-kuuuuuun!” Isshin shouted diving towards him, Koharu dodged, his fingers barely missing Koharu who grabbed at his chopsticks and Yukito grabbed the chopsticks before Koharu could stab Isshin with them.
“Do not touch me while wearing such a hideous shirt!” Koharu snapped as Yukito pulled Koharu away from Isshin. “If you are going to come to our house unannounced at least put on a decent shirt! You unadorned wackadoodle!”
Azami took the dirty dishes over to the sink before preparing the water for tea. Yukito managing to get Koharu far enough away from Isshin before letting him go. It was well known that Koharu did not like to be touched.
“So, what are you here, Kurosaki-sensei?” Azami asked, finally turning to face their neighbor.
“That’s right! I heard that Mashiba Middle School School was having an archery tournament today and decided to watch it!” Isshin proclaimed and Azami had to look away feeling ashamed that he had witnessed the school his son, Ichigo, went to losing, against Seishin Junior High School. Azami wanted to apologize for the loss. There was a slam of a door as Koharu retreated into his room.
“You all did well, you were just against a strong opponent and gave them a run for their money!” laughed Isshin patting Azami on the head.
Koharu sat on his bed trying to calm himself down before taking off his shirt feeling like he was suffocating. Scars littering his torso, arms, and legs. Scars from when he was ten, a girl who was his jealous rival had tried to threaten him with an ill trained Nidoran, when she lost control Koharu’s body was severely scarred. However when the Pokemon went for his face Koharu had unleashed a fierce aura that made everyone back away from him. Even at ten Koharu was not going to let anything touch his face. No scars, no marks. Yet with his body he had to give up on his dream of being a model, but his hands were clear and his face was unblemished so he was thankful for that. So he could still become a fashion designer, yet with the scars… ‘I’m just a fraud.’ he thought before grabbing a long sleeved shirt and slipped it on. While he was recovering Koharu had thought he would never be able to fulfill his dream. He had never wanted to be a part of the dojo, Pokemon training was always an option, but the doctors who helped him recover inspired him. He studied medicine, learning what he could to be a doctor just in case. Even Isshin was an inspiration to him. ‘Not that I will tell that to his face, especially when he is wearing those terrible shirts.’ Koharu thought before sitting down at his desk, pulling his hair into a ponytail. He began to sketch out Isshin onto a paper, writing down his sizes next to it as he began to design clothes for him. ‘I will make him fabulous.’
