Beautiful Blossoming Things

Summary:

Martyn doesn’t plan on making friends. He knows he’ll be safer on his own, and fully intends to go solo. That being said, it couldn’t hurt to have someone to watch his back in the mines, at least until he can get some armor. Maybe the cute dog hybrid he finds in the caves can change his mind about that first part.

Or

How Ren and Martyn found each other, before the world fell apart.

Work Text:

Ren was not enjoying this. He hated not knowing who he was, and he hated not knowing where he was. He wanted to go home, but he had no idea where home even was.

He was gathering resources, and he had a decent amount of wood and tools. He spotted a cave, and decided to go mining. He made himself some stone tools, then started digging. He heard footsteps, and his ears perked up. He spun around to find a person staring at him.

He had blond hair falling over a black headband, tan skin, and slightly pointed ears. He was wearing a green t-shirt, black jeans, and green sneakers. His eyes were green, like everyone else’s, but they had a unique spark of mischievousness.

“Oh!” Ren held a hand to his heart. “Dude, you scared me!”

“Sorry,” he grinned, not seeming sorry at all, “Ren, right?”

“Yeah,” he agreed, “and you’re… Martyn?”

“Bingo!” Martyn hopped down into the cave, landing with a thunk on the stone. “Mind if I join you? I’d like to get some iron for armor, and I just can’t find a good cave.”

“Sure, dude!” Ren smiled at him, “I could use a buddy. Safety in numbers, right?”

“Oh, absolutely.” Martyn took out his own pickaxe, and the two dug deeper into the cave. They mined for a while, chatting about nothing.

They found plenty of iron, and made some furnaces to smelt it. They sat on top of them, eating some steak that Martyn had gathered and cooked.

“Oh, I have something for you!” Ren dug around in his inventory and pulled out a white tulip. “Here!”

“Aw, thank you.” Martyn smiled at him, and Ren felt his tail wag involuntarily.

“I confessed my love!” he joked. “For tulips.”

“Nah,” Martyn’s soft smile turned into a playful grin, “for me.”

“Oh?”

“Yup!” he said, popping the ‘p’. “We’re married now.”

“Can’t argue with that,” Ren said, his tail now audibly thumping against the stone. From the way Martyn’s grin got bigger, he noticed.

They continued mining, laughing and talking the whole time. Ren didn’t think he’d known Martyn, but they talked like they’d known each other their entire lives. Martyn was easy to talk to, and fun. Ren felt oddly comfortable with him.

After a while, they found a staircase leading up. They climbed to the surface, and Ren took a deep breath of fresh air. He gasped when he saw their surroundings; they were in a valley, with hills stretching far above them. Flowers carpeted the ground, cornflowers and dandelions and poppies and tulips. It was beautiful, and from the way Martyn’s breath hitched he thought so too.

Maybe this wasn’t so bad, after all.

Martyn stepped into the valley. It was gorgeous here, flowers covering the ground and a beautiful pond in the middle. He could picture a home here; he could build a hobbit hole in the side of one of the mountains, and Ren could build something in the other.

He blinked at himself. Since when had Ren become part of the plan? He had been aiming to go solo. He didn’t trust a single thing about this, not even the people he was pretty sure he knew. Ren wasn’t even one of them. He’d just figured that having another person to help fight off mobs would be helpful, and that there was no reason to betray him when no one had any sort of armor or weapons. He’d thought they would go their separate ways after they left the caves.

He had joked about them being married, though. And, well, an ally would be pretty useful here. Someone to watch his back and help him get resources. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to have such a cute guy with him.

Ren had soft looking brown hair that matched the fur on his wolf ears and tail, and a scruffy beard. He wore a red shirt with black suspenders, black jeans, red sneakers, and black sunglasses that sat on top of his head. His green eyes darted around curiously, in a way that made Martyn think of a puppy introduced to a new environment and trying to take everything in.

Oh, maybe we could get a puppy. Dogs would be great for protection, and they’re super cute.

Martyn sighed to himself. He was really in this, wasn’t he? He looked back up at Ren, with his bright eyes and wagging tail and twitching ears. Maybe that’s not so bad.
