Work Text:
Angela could feel the younger woman’s eyes on her as she worked, and she knew for a fact that Nyla could too. Neither of them even had to look up to know that Lucy had a lot on her mind right now.
Angela had to admit, she had become rather protective over the younger woman. Ever since Tim had told her that he and Lucy were officially dating, Angela couldn’t help but find herself being protective. She enjoyed being around Lucy and with all Lucy had been through, she just couldn’t help but be protective.
“Are we gonna ask her what’s bothering her?” Nyla was the first to speak. Angela looked up with an amused smile.
“I don’t know I kind of like seeing her squirm,” Angela teased. Nyla rolled her eyes at Angela’s flirty nature. “But I have a feeling we won’t be getting our paperwork done if we don’t.” The two women turned in their chairs to face the woman who was at her desk fidgeting in her seat and often looking up. This time when she looked up and saw both women staring at her, her face flushed red and she sighed.
“Hey Chen,” Nyla spoke up. “Come here for a second,”
“Yeah okay,” She nodded slowly standing up to walk over to them. Lucy, who had been newly promoted to Detective, was sporting a more casual outfit instead of her previous blues.
“What is the matter with you?” Nyla asked Lucy.
“Nothing. Why would you think something is wrong,” Lucy questioned.
“Because you can barely sit in your seat,” Angela commented. “So what is it? Do I need to yell at Tim? Or are you just staring at us because we are unbelievably hot?”
“Oh definitely the second,” Lucy smirked, playing into Angela’s teasing. “But um, I do have something to tell you guys, but Tim and I agreed we wouldn’t say anything.”
“Oh god he didn’t knock you up did he?” Nyla questioned, causing Lucy to freeze. Both women paused momentarily. “Tell me he didn’t,”
“I uh,” Lucy swallowed trying to gauge their reaction to the entire thing. She and Tim were both thrilled. Of course, this wasn’t in the plan, definitely not so soon. They’ve only been dating for a little bit of a year. But this baby was a gift. “I don’t know how to answer that,”
The shock on the other two women’s faces was upright amusing. If Lucy was a wreck of nerves, she would be taking a picture. She doesn’t think she’s ever seen the two women stunned. A part of her was proud to cause the reaction. However their silence also added to her nerves, and suddenly Lucy was jumping to unnecessary conclusions.
“You think it’s a bad idea,” Lucy said. “Oh my gosh what if your right! I don’t know how to be a mom! Hell, my mom and I don’t even talk! Tim doesn’t talk to his dad! I am going to raise my baby without grandparents. Not to mention our jobs are putting a target on our backs! What the hell are we thinking?”
“Okay first of all calm down,” Nyla began. “Sit down please so my head can stop spinning.”
“I am sorry, the panics seem to be a common thing lately,” Lucy explained. “I mean I am only three months pregnant and I’ve had my fair share of freakouts,” Lucy remembered sitting in the doctor's office looking at pictures of their baby for the first time. She knew she already loved this baby so much.
“Um,” Angela began. “So…is this a celebratory thing? Because I really wanna hug but if you are gonna start crying…”
“No, it’s a good thing.” Lucy nodded. Hell, she and Tim talked about grandkids on their first date. This was a really good thing. Angela made a motion for Lucy to give her a hug and Lucy couldn’t help but melt into Angela’s arm.
“I am so happy for you two,” Angela said softly. “Tim’s probably doesn’t tell you enough but you are a saint. He’s been wanting this for so long. I am so happy he has you.”
“I am so happy I have him,” Lucy commented slightly pulling away and seeing the tears on Angela’s face. “Look who’s crying now.”
“Ugh I can’t help it,” Angela said.
“You are going to be a good mom, Lucy,” Nyla said handing Angela a tissue. Lucy looked over at Nyla.
“You think so?”
“I know so.” Nyla nodded. “I mean, look at how you are with Tamara.” Nyla reminded. “And my daughters are obsessed with you so I assume you’re fun,” Nyla joked. “But for real, this is a good thing,”
“I have seen you play in the mud with Jack. Lucy, you are gonna be a good mom,” Angela added.
“It’s just…” Lucy trailed off. “I am afraid I will make the same mistakes my parents did. I haven’t even met this baby, hell I am barely showing yet but I can’t imagine them cutting me off.”
“I think the most important thing for you to remember is that you aren’t your parents,” Nyla said calmly. “And you love your kid.”
“We won’t lie to you and say you won’t question every choice you make daily,” Angela said softly. “But as long as you remember you love them, and you are willing to protect them, then you are going to be just fine. If you ever have any trouble, you can always call us,”
“And remember you are so lucky to be doing it with someone so obsessed with you.”
“Yeah, he’s been a little extra protective lately.” Lucy laughed.
“Tell me the truth,” Angela said. “Did he freak out?”
“Did who freak out?” Tim questioned walking up to the woman. Lucy looked over at her boyfriend with a soft, loving smile. Tim took note of Angela’s teary, yet joking demonor, and Nyla’s content smile at Lucy. “You told them?”
“No,” Lucy said holding her hands up. “They told themselves.”
“Right,” Tim said sending a little glare at her, all protective and joking of course. “So you guys are happy about this?”
“You mean having to watch the world be populated with more Bradford genes?” Nyla joked. “Let’s just say I hope those kids look like her,”
“You and me both,” Tim laughed. “Ange?”
“I am so happy,” She said with a soft smile. “You deserve a little happiness, even if for the first few months it will feel like you’ve made a great mistake, and ten times a day you will mostly have either puke, poop, or food on you. Trust me, I am so excited to see Dadford,”
“Dadford?” Tim questions with a prominent frown, causing the women around him to laugh at his cluelessness.
“Tamara calls you that,” Lucy laughed. Tim couldn’t deny that he didn’t find it a bit sentimental. He’s grown quite close with Lucy’s puppy over the last few years, and while he’d never openly admit it, he’s really glad she found her way into Lucy’s, and thus his, lives.
“Have you told her yet?” Nyla asked. The group knew that Tamara was essentially their unspoken daughter, so essentially Tamara would be becoming a big sister/ or aunt.
“Yes, she was there when I found out,” Lucy nodded. She remembers the two of them on the bathroom floor laughing as they looked at the positive pregnancy test, as Tamara joked about stealing Lucy’s clothes since they wouldn’t fit her in a couple of months. “She convinced me to take the test, I was sorta freaking out again.”
“Again?” Tim frowned. He gently placed his hands on her belly, a habit he has picked up these last few weeks, one that does wonders to calm Lucy’s anxieties. She really couldn’t ask for a better partner to do this with. No one understands her the way that Tim does.
“Don’t worry,” Lucy nodded. “My girls got me,”
