His nerves had been buzzing nearly all day . Today his sister Menala was going to be sorted into a house at Arkos . Menala was excited , of course , to go to such an esteemed school . She insisted that her brother help her tie a blue bow in her hair . Blonde , like him , but unlike their parents.
Maponos assumed that he and Menala just happened to be double recessive . That is until both parents revealed that neither of their parents were blonde . So now Maponos had no idea what to think .
Until he had gotten a letter , sealed with wax and looking far too rich for his blood . The letter was given to him by a Witch from Arkos , and she explained to the family that Maponos could cast magic . So now Maponos blamed magic for screwing with their genes.
Magic . He still was skeptical and he has been at the school for nearly five years now. Though , he had Powehi to thank for her magic , cast subtlety to make it seem like he was the one casting Wingardum leviosa, or what have you . If he had gotten this far without magic , then he certainly didn't need to use it now . After all , not everything can be solved with magic .
" Stay close to me ." He held her hand perhaps just a bit tighter as he saw the near claustrophobic mass of people in the street that made up the cluster of shops . Other students , both new and returning were chatting or darting into shops . Shops that they needed to get to.
It's not that he had a fear of crowds , he just didn't like people . Moreover , he didn't want to lose track of his sister .
Menala looked down at the list . " It says I need a wand . Where do I go for that , Maponos? "
He glanced up at the signs , looking for the wand shop . " Just follow me , and stay close . " He instructed as he led his sister to the wand shop .
He hung out near the front door , letting Menala take over and " let the wand choose her " as the man running the shop said .
He glanced down at his wand , tucked into his pocket; laurel wood , rather flexible , 10 inches exactly , with a dragon heartstring core . He had never actually cast a spell with it , but he knew that the wand stayed with him out of pure spite . Of course, it was a damn , dragon heartstring . " I never asked for you ." He muttered to it , and he swore he felt it vibrate a ' yes, fuck you too .' But of course , that's impossible , wands aren't sentient .
He glances up as he notices a bright glow in his field of vision . Menala is holding a wand , grinning, as a white glow emits from the wood . She turns to look at him , " I think this one likes me . "
" Alder wood , 12 inches , flexible with a Phoenix feather core ." The shopkeep explained . " Perfect for a Witch or Wizard that is suited to serving others and a path marked for the history books ."
Menala's grin grew wider . " That's amazing , you can tell all that by my wand? "
No more than the stars dictate your personality . Maponos rolled his eyes , but kept his remarks to himself , letting his sister chat with the wand seller .
Before long , they head off to check off more items on the school list , and eventually, she has to get some sort of animal . The school list stated , a cat , owl , or toad , but frankly, Maponos wanted his sister to have something that suited her . After all , no one had said anything about his white raven, Caladrius .
So perhaps , Maponos managed to let the animal caretaker give his sister a miniature dandelion . Bred specifically to grow to the size of a large common housecat . Perhaps, that's what Menala had in its kennel as they went to board the train .
The siblings found an empty both to sit in . Maponos was all too eager to buy sweets from the candy cart when it came by . As he was enjoying his chocolate frog , the door to the booth slid open . There stood a girl , dressed in in the colors of his house , only to wear an orange cardigan over it . Two-toned hair styled half - up , half - down .
"Powehi . " He greeted .
" Young doctor . " She replied, eyes glancing over at Menala before back to Maponos . "She's attending this year? "
" It would seem so , yes . "
Powehi slid into the booth , taking a seat on his side of the cabin , eyeing his sister warily . " She's different . "
Menala , all the while , was watching the two chat about her like she wasn't there with a mixture of confusion and annoyance .
" What exactly do you mean by that? " He questioned .
" Just trust me that I know things about magic ."
Menala sighed , moving to unwrap one of Maponos ' candies . " You're an odd one , Powehi . "
" Says the odd one ." The Slytherin girl shot back .
Outside in the hall , another girl firmly said , " Inigo ."
Hours later , it was time for the sorting ceremony . Maponos had tuned most of it out , only noting that Nicholas Alessandre was sorted into Gryffindor .
That's another blow for the Alessandre name .
Not that Maponos cared if Celia or Nicholas
was sorted into Slytherin . Celia seemed to be a decent person , and that was just fine with him .
Maponos ' nerves buzzed again when Menala was called up . He had considered the possibilities before . She definitely wasn't a Slytherin , that was fine . Hufflepuff maybe , and Fianna was there . Ravenclaw, is an absolute no , not because she wasn't a smart girl, but because he didn't know any Ravenclaws to watch her on his behalf . He wouldn't be able to be there for her, and that thought plagued him the most . That leaves ...
" GRYFFINDOR! "
Across the room , at the Gryffindor table , a girl with hair sporting the house colors did an excited fist pump.
" OHMYGODSWEGOTMENALA! FUCK YES! "
Maponos felt relieved . Gryffindor was fine , better than fine . Dusk and Cynder were there . He slammed his hands on the table as he stood up , to shout . " CYNDER , DUSK , YOU HAD BETTER TAKE CARE OF HER OR SO HELP ME- "
Cynder gave him a thumbs up . " Yeah , yeah , chill out! We got her! "
He sat back down , nerves gone for the moment . At least she was in sight .
