Work Text:

Having Mes back in the apartment brought things back to life, as ironic as that sounded. Thun had feared he’d have to return from the cemetery to an empty room, lacking the warm, happy smiles and bright, pretty eyes that he had become accustomed to coming home to. He’d have to go back to living alone with the memories of what would never be again. But now, with Mes’s present afterlife not yet over, he didn’t have to be afraid.

For the most part, everything went back to normal. They listened to music, ate dinner together, were happy like they had been before this whole reincarnation threat happened. There was no longer any reminder looming over them that each day was a ticking time bomb on its way to zero.

But while things were the same, they were also so different. Thun was able to touch Mes now, put a lingering hand on his knee, poke his cheek, ruffle his hair. And instead of repressing the skipping beat in his heart when Mes flushed in response, he reveled in it. How nice it was to have his feelings reciprocated.

Whatever newfound confidence Mes had at the cemetery was stripped away as soon as Thun begged him to ditch his spot on the couch and share the bed with him. They’d shared one just the night before, but it seemed the thought of never getting the chance to do so again had given Mes the little push he needed. Now that that wouldn’t be a problem in the foreseeable future, he was hesitant.

It took a good hour of pleading with a few tugs on his hands and a pair of puppy eyes to finally get him to shuffle into the bedroom and lay on one side of the bed. Thun changed into his pajamas, and when he joined him, he made sure to leave a space in between them. There was plenty of time for cuddling; for now, just being next to him was enough.

They said their good nights, and Thun switched off the light. Having Mes beside him was surefire proof he’d be getting a peaceful sleep.

Which was why he was confused as to why he was stirred awake in the early hours of the morning. It was still dark outside, and the clock on his bedside table read somewhere between two and three in the morning. It was only when he shifted further up on his pillow that he found the culprit to his early rise.

Mes’s head was nuzzled into his waist, just above his hip. One hand was curled into his night shirt while the other was fisting the blanket that had fallen halfway off of him during his snuggle.

He was unbearably cute, looking so small and comfy beside him. Running his fingers gently over his hair, Thun let them trace over his ear and down to his jaw. Nose scrunched, Mes buried himself closer into his side.

Carefully, as to not disturb him more, Thun pulled the dislodged blanket back over Mes’s uncovered side, making sure it went up over his shoulders. He wasn’t sure if ghosts could get cold, but at least he’d be the most comfortable this way.

With Mes still again, Thun let his head loll to the side so he could look down at him. He wondered if this was why Mes was still here; so he could have more nights like these. Thun supposed he would never know the true answer, but if there was any possibility that was the reason he was still in his life, then Thun would make sure he had more than enough of them.
