Work Text:

"I love you all. Especially you, Megumi Fushiguro." Tears rolled down Yuuji's flushed cheeks. Despite the level of fear and dread present in his mind, he forced his signature wide smile to sit on his face. He watched Megumi thrash in Gojo's hold. He was crying and trying to get to Yuuji.

"Stop! Gojo, fucking let me go! Yuuji's in danger! Please! Get him out of here!" Gojo regretfully shook his head and held Megumi tighter. Megumi clapped his hands together to summon his shikigami, but Gojo forced his hands apart. The second years stood behind Gojo with tear stained faces, holding back the urge to help Yuuji.

The sorcerers in front of Yuuji stepped back, worried about what Megumi would do. Yuuji's smile softened at how hard Megumi was fighting for him. It truly made him happy. He wished he could reach out and just hold Megumi in his arms to comfort him. He decided to use his voice as a substitute. Maybe he could offer him a little bit of comfort.

"Megumi, please. Calm down. It's okay. I've accepted this." This is not true, but he didn't want Megumi to know exactly how scared he was. Even if he was able to free himself, the fear has left his lower body paralyzed. He wouldn't have been able to run. He was like a wounded animal, waiting to be killed by the predator.

"How can I calm down? How could you accept this? You don't deserve this!" Megumi shouted and looked Yuuji directly in the eyes. Even at a distance, Yuuji could see every emotion rapidly flashing through Megumi's eyes. Fear, anger, heartbreak. Megumi's voice was watery and strained. "I can't live this life without you, Yuuji! I need you!"

Yuuji's already broken heart shattered into millions of pieces. He knew Megumi couldn't live without him. Megumi was closest to him and Nobara. He remembered Megumi's reaction when Yuuji told him Nobara didn't make it in Shibuya.

Gojo had his arms completely wrapped around a struggling Megumi's stomach. Yuuji could tell he was having trouble holding him back; not because he was weaker, but because it was destroying him to see Megumi this way, in this frantic state. "Megumi, stop struggling. We can't stop this."

"I can. If you let me go, I can stop this! I can save him! So, please let me go!" Megumi started to use every ounce of strength to try and escape Gojo's grasp. Maki grabbed Panda's paw, while Yuuta was on the other side holding Inumaki's remaining hand.

The sorcerers stepped toward Yuuji, ready to execute him. Yuuji sat up as straight as he could. Megumi along with everyone else froze. Yuuji looked Megumi directly in his eyes. He focused directly on Megumi's eyes and relaxed a bit. He unsuccessfully blinked back tears and shakily exhaled.

Megumi couldn't move. He knew that Yuuji was about to be killed in front of him, but his body wouldn't function. All he could do was look at the love of his life; tied up, surrounded by tailsmens and his executors, crying, but relaxed. Yuuji moved his gaze over to Gojo. He gave Yuuji a weak smile. "You are a great student, Yuuji. Thank you for allowing me to be your teacher. It was an honor to know you. Your grandpa would be proud."

The sorcerers synced their cured energy into their blades, ready to execute. Yuuji knew it was time. He closed his eyes and relished in the feeling of air flowing through his lungs. He opened his eyes and focused on Megumi once again. He wanted his last remaining sight to be on the person who made him the absolute happiest he has ever been. He gaze softened as the sorcerers raised their weapons.

"Goodbye, Megumi. I'll see you in the next life."

“Yuuji, please!”

The sorcerers plunged their blades into Yuuji chest. His face flashed with distraught pain and groaned. He gasped for air a couple of times before he slumped down, face devoid of any emotion. The sorcerers withdrew their blades harshly. Yuuji's body fell forward, completely lifeless, blood slowly leaking out of the fresh wounds.

Megumi heard the cries behind him. He knew what had just happened before him, but he couldn't process it. He was frozen, the only thing holding him up was Gojo's tight hold on him. He watched the sorcerers walk out of his line of sight. His eyes were glued to the body in front of him, tears and blood mixing together. Gojo slowly put Megumi on the ground. He walked over and untied Yuuji's wrists. He carefully laid Yuuji's body down on the floor.

Gojo couldn't hold his emotions back anymore. He fell to his knees and quietly sobbed next to Yuuji's body. The second years crowded around Megumi. They tried to comfort him through their tears. Megumi focused on the body and he couldn’t look away. He heard the second years watery generic comfort phrases. Suddenly, everything hit him all at once. His vision became cloudy and his heart rate exploded in his ears. He looked at everyone. He was surrounded by tears and pitiful looks.

He started mumbling. "No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No." He stood up and ran his way over to Yuuji's body. He grabbed Yuuji's shoulders and harshly shook them. "Come- Come on, Idiot. Wake up. This is nothing compared to having your heart ripped out." Yuuji's eyes remained closed. His pale face devoid of his usual wide smile that made Megumi's heart melt. He gaze moved down toward Yuuji's chest. Yuuji's uniform was full of holes and stained with blood.

"Come on, Yuuji! Please! Wake up! You’ve come back from the dead before, so you can do it now!" Megumi continued to shake him. Yuuji couldn't react. Gojo scooted towards Megumi. He put a hand on Megumi’s shoulder and pulled him backwards.

"Megumi, he's gone. He can't come back this time."

Megumi shook his head frantically. "No. Sukuna. Sukuna, please bring Yuuji back! I'll agree to whatever deal you offer! Please, give Yuuji back to me."

Gojo squeezed Megumi's shoulder. Megumi turned toward him. He saw Gojo's blue eyes filled with tears and pain. Gojo shook his head. Megumi turned toward Yuuji's body and pulled it towards his chest. He sobbed into the lifeless body's shoulder, while rocking back and forth.

"Please, please. Yuuji, come back to me. We-we still ha-have so much to do together. We still have cur-curses to exorcise together. I can't go on without you."

Gojo pulled Megumi away from Yuuji's body, not without protests from him. Once Gojo had Megumi out of the room, he set him down. Megumi turned around and tried to walk away, but within his first steps he fell to his knees. He let out a heart-wrentching scream and hit the floor with all his strength, cracking it. Gojo sat beside him and pulled him into his chest. Megumi clawed onto Gojo as someway to ground himself into reality.

This couldn't be real.

This was a dream.

He was going to wake up tomorrow morning and be wrapped in Yuuji's arms.

Except, he couldn't do that.

Because Yuuji is gone.

He's dead.

He was killed in front of Megumi.

Megumi sobbed harder and pulled on his hair to release some of his frustration. Gojo untangled Megumi's fingers from his hair and pulled his hands down to Megumi's lap. Gojo rubbed Megumi's back as Megumi continued to sobbed into Gojo's uniform jacket. "I know, Megumi." Gojo let a few of his tears flow at the all too familar feeling of loss.
