Chapter 1: spookie season

Chapter Text

Even after spending the entire afternoon preparing the jar of candies for the kids, Choso still felt like something was missing, and he was determined to figure it out before the doorbell started ringing.

As he weighed his options, he considered if more chocolate candies filled with peanut butter might be a good addition, or perhaps the watermelon lollipops he had been devouring non-stop for the past month. But he quickly dismissed the latter idea; he didn't want to share those lollipops with anyone else, except for you.

He glanced at the wall clock and noticed that the hands pointed to 6:45 PM. Surely, you were on your way back home from work. He swallowed hard and made his way upstairs to the second floor. He had no idea why he was feeling so anxious. All things considered, it was quite ridiculous, especially coming from him, someone who was half-cursed and half-human and had committed acts he was far from proud of.

But all that was in the past; now he was fortunate to have you as his beautiful wife, and they lived together in their cozy house in Takayama, with a small garden in the backyard and a stray cat that visited them all too often. Not to mention his little brother, Yuuji, who occasionally traveled there from Tokyo.

He ignored the fact that his cheeks instantly turned red with every thought of you, and he hurriedly put on a light sweater and fixed his hair with a hair tie. It was important to look presentable, in case the kids and their parents began showing up at their doorstep.

After a few minutes, he heard the sound of keys at the front door, and his heart skipped with excitement.

You rushed through the door with a bright smile, and Choso couldn't help but be relieved by the sparkle in your eyes. But his relief turned into confusion when you stopped in front of him and asked, "Where's your costume, Choso?"

He looked down, unaware that you had been carrying a pair of kitten ears in your hand. With a soft laugh, you approached him and placed the ears in his hair. "There, you look perfect!" you exclaimed.

If his cheeks reddened at the mere thought of you, there was no need to describe how he felt when you gave him the slightest touch. He was practically melting, and all he could manage was a murmured, "Okay," before pressing his lips to yours.

But before things could escalate, the doorbell rang, indicating that the kids were already here for candy.

"Go and hand out those candies, sweetheart," you said, giving him another kiss and pushing him toward the entrance.

Choso nodded with a smile, his cheeks still flushed, and he grabbed the jar of candies. He headed to the front door to greet the eager little monsters and ghosts.
