The Best I’ve Had

Summary:

Lucy is jealous and hurt over how Tim treats his new rookies, Barnes (3x11)

Work Text:

“What the hell?” Lucy says as she sees Tim and his new, beautiful rookie. Katie Barnes. Lucy shouldn’t be jealous, but she is. He is smiling and laughing with her on the first day. Tim scarred her in the beginning and made her question every life decision. Now he is buying her coffee and letting her drive?! What the hell. Why did he treat me so terribly?

“Lucy.” Jackson says and she stares at him and Tamara, unsure of what to say.

“What?” It comes out more harshly than she intended and she winces when she realizes it. “Sorry. We need to go out on patrol.” She says as she stands up and walks to their shop. Jackson runs after her and gets in the driver's seat.

He starts driving and stares at Lucy. “What’s wrong?” He pries.

“Nothing.” Lucy says annoyed.

“Lucy. Is this about Tim and his new rookie?” Jackson heard her comments all morning and he swears he saw jealousy showing.

“Nope. Not at all.” Jackson goes to respond when Lucy goes on a rant. “Why is he being so nice to her? He made my life a living hell. I swear he secretly hates me and was glad when I finished training. Maybe I should transfer so that he doesn’t have to be reminded of what a terrible cop I am? He won’t have to see me anymore.” Lucy scoffs out just as a call comes in. Jackson is in shock.

“You’re jealous.” He says after their call is finished. Lucy rolls her eyes.

“I am NOT jealous. I’m done talking about this.” Lucy looks out the window grateful their day is done. Okay maybe I’m jealous, but I’m hurt. He is treating her so much better. I feel so awful. What could I have done differently? He will never feel anything about me will he? Damnit. You shouldn’t have pulled that prank on the last day.

Lucy leaves Jackson to put the warbags away and heads to start paperwork. She sits at her desk and gets started. She tries to ignore the noises of the station around her and it works for a while. That is until Tim and Katie walk in.

“You can get changed out. I’ll finish what’s left of our paperwork. See you tomorrow?”

“Yes sir. See you tomorrow.” Lucy feels sick. Why does this hurt so much? It feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. Damnit Lucy. Stop it! She refuses to look up and quickly completes her paperwork. Tim can sense something’s off with Lucy, but doesn’t say anything. She gets up angrily and puts her paperwork with Grey.

Lucy runs to the locker room and changes as quickly as possible. She fights the tears in her eyes and runs out without being seen. Thankfully Tim is not around and she can make her escape. She decides to go to a bar.

Lucy sits down and orders a few shots. “Three more please.” The bartender looks at her.

“That’s enough for now.” He says placing them down. Lucy nods when she feels a presence besides her. She sees Katie Barnes.

“Lucy right?” Katie sits next to her.

“Mhm.” She says not wanting to make conversation.

“I know it’s probably the wrong place, but I’ve heard nothing but great things.” Lucy scoffs.

“I’m sure you have.” She says sassily. “Can’t imagine Tim has anything nice to say about me. He’s clearly got the perfect rookie with you. Just what he wants.” Lucy’s buzzed and not caring about what she says. Then she lets some tears fall and hates crying in front of others.

“He did. Honestly I can’t decide if I should stay on or not. I haven’t been home from the military long and I always feel like I’m ready for battle. Maybe I should take some time before moving forward. Tim said you’re the best he’s seen in a while which is why I wanted to talk to you, but you seem upset. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Lucy stops her as she goes to stand up. “No stay. I’m sorry. It’s just, my first few months as a rookie were a lot different than how Tim was with you today.” She won’t admit she was hurt or jealous, but she’s pretty sure that much is obvious. “Listen. I can’t tell you what to do, but I can tell you that Tim is a hell of a TO. You couldn’t ask for anyone better. If you choose to stay, I know he can make you into a great cop and help you through things. Either way, I am here for you. I know how lonely it can be. Since you’re the only rookie, you can talk to me. If you choose to leave, I’d still like to talk to you. I’m sorry for coming across rude. I’ve had a lot going on.”

“You weren’t rude Lucy. Thank you. I think I’ll see how the week goes and decide. I hope we can be friends either way. You also don’t need to be jealous.” Lucy goes to protest. “It’s not my place, but anytime you were around Tim’s eyes were on you. He told me how amazing you’ve become. Maybe I can help you get what you deserve and you can help me.” Katie smirks.

“Cheers to that.” Lucy says as they share a drink. “I cannot drive. I drank too much.” She doesn't want to feel jealous of Katie, but she is. Maybe she should talk to Tim.

“I haven’t. I can bring you home.” Katie says sheepishly. Lucy nods and they head to her apartment. They say goodbye and Lucy heads upstairs. She needs to sleep this off and talk to Tim tomorrow. As she turns the corner, Tim’s in front of her door. Shit. He looks angry.

“What Tim?” She spits out not wanting to do this right now. He looks at her door and she opens it up, storming inside.

“What is your problem Lucy?” He doesn’t waste any time.

“My problem?” She screams and she feels the alcohol in her system. “Let’s see Tim. You treat your rookie like she’s your best friend one day one. You let her drive, buy her coffee, do the paperwork, and laugh with her. On my first day , you made my life miserable. Bet you’re glad I’m gone. Maybe I should leave so you don’t have to be reminded of what you had to deal with. On top of it she’s gorgeous. Perfect right?” She’s shaking by the end, everything Katie said earlier has been forgotten.

“Seriously Lucy?! You have no reason to be upset. Everyone is trained differently. She needs to see the world isn’t a scary place. You needed to see it was. I train based on what you need. You’re so kind and caring Lucy.”

“Okay Tim. That doesn’t change things. I’m sorry that Grey assigned me to you. I know you could have done better with Jackson.”

“Damnit Lucy. I didn’t want to train anyone else. What is wrong with you? You were unprofessional today. The comments and eye rolls weren’t necessary.”

“Yep, fine. Nothing is wrong. I'm nobody. Just your old boot. The one you couldn’t wash out. Why? Because I was kidnapped? I failed as a cop. You should have washed me out.” Lucy knows she’s being ridiculous, but he hurt her and he doesn’t realize it. “Just go Tim. I’m not who you want.”

Tim had a realization as he looks at Lucy. “You’re jealous?” He says pointedly. Lucy turns around so he can’t see her face. “Why Lucy?”

She doesn’t want to answer, but he won’t stop. “Why? You have what you want now. I was never good enough. Maybe I wasn’t lying on my last day, but your face said how you felt. I took it back, but dammit Tim. Maybe I’m jealous because I like you too much and I know I’ll never have you.” Tim’s stunned and can’t speak.

“Lucy. I don’t like her in that way. I just met her. Who says I don’t feel the same? You surprised me and I couldn’t think clearly.” Tim spins her around.

“I won’t do anything while you are drunk. I like you Lucy. I want to take you on dates and come home to you.”

“You aren’t just saying that?” She says and all her insecurities seem to be showing.

“No Lucy I’m not. Let’s get you to bed. We can talk tomorrow.”

“Don’t leave me Tim.” She begs. He sleeps on the couch and the next day, Lucy is embarrassed by her behavior. Tim kisses her now that she's more aware and promises a date that night. Katie stays finishing her rookie year and becomes her partner when she finishes her training. When Lucy marries Tim, Katie stands by her side. Lucy is grateful she gave her a kick on the ass when it was needed. Tim finally became a Sergeant too. When their kids were born, Aunt Katie became a favorite to them.
