Work Text:

“I'm going to miss you, Ichi.”

“I'm gonna miss you too, babe.”

It was the night before Ichiban was supposed to leave for his flight to Hawaii, on an extremely personal quest, but he decided it was probably best for you stay home in case anything bad happens. You argued that's more of a reason for you to come with him, but his mind was made up. Always so quick to self-sacrifice.

The two of you were cuddled up in bed, in the comfort of your shared apartment. No other noise other than the sound of the two of you breathing, if you had nuzzled your head any closer to his chest you'd be able to hear his soothing heartbeat. His arm was draped around your waist, while your hands were bunched up at his bare chest.

“You better get home in one piece,” you remarked, looking up at him. “I know what you're like, Mr. Part-Time Hero.”

He looked down and gave you an incredulous expression. “What's that supposed to mean?”

“It means you tend to get yourself in the weirdest situations, no matter where you go.”

“I need to boost my stats.” He replied, completely serious. Again with the video game talk.

“Guess that makes you the protagonist of the story?” You snorted, knowing better than to dishearten or worry him.

He got that enough from the other members of the party, and the slightly crestfallen look on his face like he was a kicked puppy always left your heart aching for him. So you put up with it, and he loved you for playing along with it.

“If I'm the protagonist, then you're the super cute love interest that gets with me at the end of the story.” He beamed a contagious smile, clearly proud at his attempt to flirt.

“We're already together, Ichi.”

“Even better!”

The two of you continued to lay in a comfortable silence together, this time just staring into each other's eyes with content smiles on your faces.

Another moment went by before Ichiban spoke up again. “Hey, you will be okay while I'm gone, right?”

“I mean, I'll be missing you like crazy, but I'll be okay.” You half-joked, knowing that every night he's gone you'll be hugging his pillow to help you sleep.

“Promise?”

His hand moved from your waist to your cheek, slowly stroking just underneath your eye.

The worry was evident in both his voice and his eyes, despite the small smile he kept plastered to his face. His eyebrows knitted together, painting a pretty obvious picture that he was going to be worried about you the whole time he'll be away. His eyes desperately searched for a reason to miss his flight tomorrow, and to stay in your arms for as long as possible instead. But both of you knew he couldn't do that, as much as you both wanted it.

“Promise.”

He visibly relaxed, his smile widening once more before he pressed a slow kiss to your lips, full of the love he was always so willing to shower you in. Then, he buried his face into your hair as he finally tried to get some rest before his trip to the other side of the world.

You weren't entirely sure how long it had been exactly, but his breathing had slowed and his hand had eventually moved back to your waist. Your face had been buried in his chest once more, when his voice had suddenly broke the silence.

“What if aliens think we're the aliens—”

“What?”

“Think about it!”

“I thought you were asleep,” your laugh was muffled by the bare skin of his chest, creating a weird sensation for him. You moved so you could look up at him.

“Why aren't you asleep?” He tilted his head genuinely.

“I feel like I should be asking you that, you've got a big day tomorrow,” you yawned.

“I'll be fine. I'll just… get sleep on the plane or something.”

“Meanwhile, all your belongings are gonna get stolen.” You deadpanned, snuggling back into his chest.

“Nah, they won't.” He dragged out, as if that isn't the exact type of thing to happen to him. “You've still got work tomorrow, you need to sleep so you don't get chewed out for being late or something. Want me to help? I can read to you or– oh, you're asleep.”

His heart felt full of admiration as he witnessed this peaceful sight of you rarely being able to relax before he knocked out.

“Goodnight, baby. I'll come back safe and sound for you.” He whispered, now pressing a kiss to your forehead.

Just wait until you found out he did, in fact, get robbed of all his possessions and clothes.
