Michael repeated her blows with perfect precision, for hours she had been doing over and over again the gestures she knew by heart. It was almost like a dance, she loved hearing the sound of her blade cutting the air with each movement.
It was a beautiful day and she thought she was peaceful in a remote plain, far from the city. She didn't even know why she came to earth in the first place, there were special rooms in heaven for training. But she just wanted to get away from it and be alone.
However, making a movement that made her turn around, she stopped when she saw someone watching her. Someone who was none other than the Master of Torments herself. She lowered her sword.
" What ? If you have something to say, say it, instead of spying, " said Michael.
" What a spectacle you offer, " joked Dagon. " Don’t let me stop you. "
" You are here since a long time ? " asked the angel.
It had been so long since she would train in the presence of other people that she almost felt embarrassed. Especially if it was a demon watching her.
" Enough to appreciate what I saw, " replied the redhead as she approached. " You training for war ? "
Michael huffed. " Get out of there. I don't have time for your games. "
" Wouldn't you rather fight against someone else ? Instead of spinning around in the void ? "
Michael stared at her for a moment, wondering if this was some kind of trick or if she was really serious. Because honestly, this plain would be the perfect place to kill her and run away without anyone knowing. However, the proposal made her itch. Fighting was in her blood and it was too tempting.
" And what do you suggest ? " she asked then.
" Fight me, " replied Dagon.
The brunette agreed that training with someone else was much more effective in improving yourself. Furthermore, she had to admit that she was curious to see what the demon could do.
Their relationship was quite strange. Since what happened in the bookshop, they saw each other often, probably more than they should and spent time together when they "accidentally met".
Neither wanted to admit it but they preferred each other's company rather than that of all their colleagues. Every time the other's name came up during a meeting for a mission to Earth, they were, as luck would have it, very willing to take care of it.
In fact, they were acting like two teenage girls having their first crush and as long as neither one said it out loud then everything was fine. If nothing was said, then there was nothing to take responsibility for. It was good like that, wasn't it ?
" You don't have any weapons ? " Michael finally asked her.
" Of course I do, " replied the Duke, conjuring up a sword with a shiny black blade. " But be careful, Sunlight, I bite and scratch too. "
" Less speec- " began the angel before being cut off.
With a metallic crash, steel met steel. Michael had miraculously managed to ward off Dagon's blow, who began to laugh.
" Well done, angel, " she said, stepping back.
" Are you planning to cheat ? " asked Michael, narrowing her eyes.
" Would I do that ? " replied Dagon, slyly, before rushing towards her.
The sword seemed almost alive in her hands, as if it were a part of her body. Michael jumped back while parrying but the redhead continued her attacks. She barely deflected one attack when another pounced on her.
The swords separated only to meet again and Dagon could feel her blood boiling with excitement. She was ecstatic to finally be able to fight against someone who could handle her for more than a few minutes.
From above, from below, sideways, the demon rained steel on Michael. From the left, from the right, so violent that the meeting of the blades caused sparks to fly.
She attacked relentlessly, trying to slip through her defenses but Michael was strong. Michael was fast. Michael was agile and in her element and in a flash of light, she released her wings.
Surprised, Dagon had to step back to avoid both a wing strike and the blade which almost grazed her throat and the brunette took the opportunity to kick her violently in the ribs, sending her several meters away.
The redhead stood up, placing her hand where the angel had struck her and was able to see Michael in her entirety. All wings out, all six, four were large and two were a little smaller. They were several shades of gold and shone in the sun.
" Not bad, " admitted Dagon, picking up her sword after forcing herself to look away. " Not bad at all. "
" Satisfied ? " Michael asked her, pointing her weapon at her.
" Let's just say... no ! " replied Dagon, getting up before rushing towards the angel again.
Michael had to admit that she was surprised by the speed and strength of the duke, rare were the adversaries who managed to make her retreat. But it was a good surprise, she quite enjoyed the fight.
Their swords were crossed in front of their faces and taking advantage of their proximity, Dagon placed her foot behind that of the brunette before pushing her, making her lose her balance. However, she only put one knee on the ground instead of falling.
" You're cheating, " concluded Michael, parrying another blow.
" Really ? In a real fight, you can’t always do everything fairly. "
Dagon kicked her in the chest and this time the angel gasped as she fell to the ground on her back. The redhead almost threw herself at her, placing her weapon against Michael's throat, who parred her at the last moment.
" You're stronger than you look, " she whispered close to her ear.
" What was you think ? " said Michael, bracing one of her feet against her groin. " I'm a warrior, I was trained to be, " she added, pushing her away again with her leg.
Michael quickly got up and then began to return her blows, striking again and again and again and Dagon uttered a curse when she felt herself backing away in turn. All that could be heard was the whistling steel and the random grunts of the redhead in front of the angel, who was managing to stay out of reach.
" Hisss ! " she hissed. " Let me touch you, " she growled more to herself.
" Oh gosh, watch your language, " Michael huffed her.
" Why ? " asked Dagon, smiling, having understood the double meaning of her sentence. " You don’t want me to touch you, pretty angel ? I'm sure you do. "
With a growl, Michael advanced towards her, spinning her blade skillfully. And after several blows exchanged, the brunette managed to deliver a violent blow to the demon's temple with the pommel of her sword.
Dagon felt blood running into her eye, blurring her vision and she found herself in difficulty. Reflexively, she let out her own wings to try to protect herself, she had four, four large ones, dark blue in color. That didn't stop Michael from kicking her legs again, making her fall back.
" I win again, " the brunette informed her, grabbing the collar of her coat to hold her on the ground.
" Maybe I let you win, " Dagon told her.
" Yes, that’s obvious, " replied Michael, sarcastically. " Are you surrendering ? "
" Surely not ! "
" Ah ! " exclaimed Michael, pushing away Dagon who had managed to stand up to bite her shoulder, before walking away.
" I warned you, " said the duke, licking her lips.
There were only a few meters between the two as they caught their breath. How long their exchange had lasted, they could not say. Minutes? Hours ?
Michael was certainly the more trained of the two but Dagon and her chaotic energy competed perfectly. The two therefore found themselves on an equal level and their fight could last a really long time if they didn't stop.
" You know, you're a really good sparring partner, " Dagon said then.
" Don’t use that term, " growled Michael, but Dagon could see her slight blush.
" Which one ? Partner ? " repeated the redhead.
" That one, " confirmed Michael.
" Why ? Do you prefer duo ? teammates ? Or maybe coup- ow. "
Dagon found herself pinned to the ground for the second time.
" Don’t you dare finish this sentence. "
Michael hadn't even realized that by pinning her like that, she had literally found herself sitting on the demon's hips, one leg on each side.
The Duke, on the other hand, had noticed it and didn't really complain about it. In fact, she rather liked it and she gave her a predatory smile.
" It’s unfair, you’re distracting me, " she said.
The angel had the reflex of some puppies when they didn't understand something, she turned her head to the side with a questioning look.
" With all your splendor and these shining gorgeous wings... " continued Dagon.
" Wha- "
Michael was surprised by what she had just said that she froze. She wasn't really used to compliments on her looks.
" Are you planning to stay on top of me much longer ? Because you risk making me start another kind of fight, angel, " joked Dagon.
" What are you talking about ? "
Dagon let out a hoarse laugh, it's crazy how innocent angels could be sometimes. She then placed her hand on one of Michael's thighs who flinched before finally realizing their position.
She took the opportunity to reverse their positions and under the impact, Michael let go of her sword which slid further, out of reach and Dagon pinned the brunette's hands firmly on either side of her head.
" Whoa, what a vision, " she joked before looking at her for a moment. " Wouldn’t we make an ideal duo ? Or an ideal... couple ? "
Michael's eyes widened slightly. Dagon had finally dared to say it out loud, there was no turning back now.
" Ah yeah, you agree. I can feel it, " she added.
" Certainly not ! " the angel almost shouted, but her tone sounded false.
To deny it would be stupid and Michael knew it, demons can smell lies.
" Of course you want, why lie ? I know it and you know it. "
" No- you- let go of me ! "
" Free yourself, we both know you can, " Dagon told her. " But maybe you don't really want to, " she added, bringing their faces closer.
Michael tried to stop herself from looking at her lips but it was no use. She had seen humans do it before and had always found it strange and uninteresting, she knew it was wrong to think that, but now she would really like to try...
" You want me to kiss you so bad, admit it, " said Dagon.
Indeed I want.
The angel was silent and just stared at her. A bunch of questions and scenarios, sometimes horrifying, raced through her mind. Yet she knew she shouldn't care.
" I don't know if I can do this, " Michael finally gave in.
" Why not ? It's just a kiss. "
" I'm not just talking about that. Your..., " the angel huffed. " Your story as a... couple... who says it will work ? "
" Oh, so you admit it ? "
" Just answer. "
" Well, it seems to me it’s been done twice already, and it went quite well. "
Dagon was right, however, Michael was afraid that this time, for one reason or another, it wouldn't work, afraid that Dagon would be hurt or worse, killed.
" Think about it, " added the duke.
I'm thinking about it ! So what ? Fuck heaven ? Fuck hell ?
" What scares you so much ? "
" What if you're killed ? " whispered Michael.
Dagon scoffed.
" Let them try, " she said.
" What if I fall ? "
" I’ll catch you, " assured Dagon even if she really doubted that it would happen.
" But I won't be an angel anymore, " clarified Michael, as if she was convinced that she would lose all value in the eyes of the demon if that happened.
" Are you kidding me ? I don’t really give a damn about that. I don't want an angel, I want you, whatever you are. "
Dagon hadn't thought when she spoke, it came out on its own but it was damn honest. She didn't dare admit it but Michael was really touched by what she had just said.
" And what if there is a war in the end ? " she asked. " I think... I think I don't want to do it anymore... " she added in a low voice.
She would never, really never, have thought that one day. She had prepared for this for millennia and yet all her beliefs had collapsed in a few months.
" What made you change your mind ? " asked Dagon.
Michael didn't respond.
" We're leaving. Far, far away from here, " concluded the duke.
" We're leaving ? That would be madness. "
" Certainly. "
Indeed, that would be madness. The Archangel Michael ready to give up everything for a demon ? It seemed ridiculous and yet she thought strongly about it.
...yeah
" I’ll be damned, " she said.
" It's not so ba- "
Michael cut her off by raising her head to seal their lips and had absolutely no idea what she was doing, it was the first time. Dagon responded instantly, melting into the kiss that tasted of passion held back for too long and maybe also a little blood from the blow and the bite earlier. She could feel her wings ruffling on her own, probably too much emotion at once.
It was primal, it was true, it was natural, no matter what others would think of it. They probably kissed for as long as they fought because neither wanted to stop. Lucky they didn't need to breathe.
Dagon was the one who broke the kiss, reluctantly. Even though she already thought she was addicted, she preferred not to stay outside, on the ground, to do that.
" Haha, I knew you wanted that, " she said and the brunette rolled her eyes.
" Don't start, " huffed Michael. " And get up, you’re ruining my wings. "
" You have no idea what you just unleashed, " the redhead said as she stood up.
" Do you want another fight to calm down ? " asked the angel.
" Oh Michael, I'd take any kind of fight with you, " Dagon replied with a wink.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all.
