Work Text:
“What're you doing?” Yuki asked with an exasperated sigh. Her deadline was fast approaching. She didn't have time for this.
“Nothing in particular.”
The answer she received was nonchalant, uncaring, almost dismissive. Yuki wasn't happy.
“Then get up and go play with your guitar or something. Leave me alone.”
Even as the words left her mouth, Yuki was aware of her sharp tone and a tinge of guilt ran through her. But she couldn't help it. She was stressed and tired and she didn't have the energy to deal with Ruka's antics.
But the girl lying on the couch with her head on Yuki's lap was unrelenting. She rolled around in protest, almost as if to say that it was her territory and she wasn't giving up on it. How she managed to not fall off from the narrow couch was a mystery.
“Ruka, I…need to work,” Yuki tried again, this time with a softer voice, as if she were a mother trying to reason with her unreasonable child. “I’ll give you all the attention you want once I’m done.”
A scowl crossed Ruka's face at that statement. She lifted her head and hung her right arm around Yuki's neck before she could stop her. Then she brought her face close to Yuki’s and peered straight into her eyes.
“Are you sure that you're not the one who needs attention?”
“Wh-What?!” Thrown off by the unexpected reply, Yuki tried to separate herself from Ruka's hold but she could only struggle in vain under her firm grip.
“When was the last time you got some shut-eye?”
Yuki sighed. She had hoped that Ruka wouldn't notice since she was busy with her band and not at home that often anymore.
“Don't worry about it. I can catch up on sleep later.”
“That won't do.”
“H-Hey, what're you doing?!”
Ruka pulled Yukki down till she was lying on the couch herself. The narrow space definitely wasn't made for more than one person to comfortably lie down but Ruka didn't seem to care. She shifted her weight and made sure that Yuki couldn't escape before covering her with her own body and running two fingers through her now messy hair. Deaf to Yuki’s protests, she removed her glasses and placed them on the small table nearby, kissing her forehead in the process. When Ruka turned back to face her, Yuki's face was red.
“Why…do we need to do this? I’ll go to my bedroom and—”
“And lock yourself in and pretend that you're sleeping while you're actually hacking away at your work.”
Yuki rolled her eyes at the pun but her usually quick-witted brain was tired and refused to come up with a clever comeback, so she stayed silent.
Ruka held Yuki closer and patted her back. “Don't worry. I’ll put you to sleep with a sweet lullaby.”
“I don't think I’ll be able to sleep that way…”
“Why not? I won't go for any of the hard rock ones.”
“No, that's not…” Yuki tried to turn her eyes away. “If you're singing, I’d rather stay awake and listen.”
Ruka's heart seemed to have leaped at those words and she smiled. Her cheeks were dusted a happy shade of pink as she looked at Yuki's colored in embarrassment.
“Yukki…! Okay, then I’ll just hold you in my arms till you're able to relax.”
“How is being forced to relax supposed to be relaxing?”
“Hmm…” Ruka's grip tightened and she whispered softly, “But I think you already look more relaxed than you've looked in days.”
Yuki found it hard to argue. It was true that the heat radiating from Ruka's body was more calming and comforting than any blanket and lulling her to sleep already. It felt a little frustrating to give in but the temptation was too strong. So she wrapped her left arm around Ruka and nuzzled closer.
“Woah, isn't my Yukki super affectionate today?”
“Shut up,” Yuki mumbled out slowly, her voice slightly muffled as sleep overtook her and her eyes closed. “You’re the one who offered. Lemme have this if I gotta sleep.”
Ruka chuckled and hugged her girlfriend even tighter. She stroked her hair and smiled. “I’ll be right here with you till you wake up so sleep all you want.”
“It's…a promise…then…okay?” Yuki's barely audible voice faded away along with her consciousness.
“Yeah,” and Ruka closed her own eyes as well.
