“Hey, Ash, did you have any any friends before you became a Pokémon trainer,” asked Dawn.
“Well, of course I did,” Ash answered, “but it’s been so long that I can’t really remember their faces, let alone their names. Pallet Town’s small, so there aren’t that many opportunities for families. Most, if not all of them, moved away to bigger cities or even to other regions.”
Dawn looked back at Ash with a sad smile her face. “I hope you do meet one of them someday."
Ash chuckled, then smiled back at Dawn. “I hope so, too.”
