Work Text:
I'm hidden because the world
Would expose my skin
Tear my clothes to pieces
Tear my clothes to pieces
"Maeve, truth or dare?"
"Dare"
"I dare you to scream your favorite Taylor Swift song on the balcony"
"Karter it's fucking three am."
"Is this you backing down?" Karter raised an eyebrow, clearly challenging his friend.
Maeve hesitated, then she stood up and started playing the music from her phone.
"And you want to scream, don't call me kid, don't call me baby..."
"Karter you owe me this" said Maeve after sitting back down once the song was finished. It's not that her voice was bad, it's just that Donovan didn't think that their classmates would appreciate being woken up at this hour.
No matter how many missed assignments they had and no matter how much they actually had to study, they couldn't miss their weekly game night.
On one side, Donovan loved spending time with his friends. They'd always have so much fun even when things would get weird and cruel dares would be given.
Speaking of dares.
"Aria, truth or dare?"
"That's not fucking fair"
"It's the rules" Donovan grinned, knowing that by their rules they couldn't say "truth" more then two times in a row and that he had to get revenge for a dare she played on him the earlier week.
"Dare" She said sighting, dreading what she knew was about to come.
"I dare you to send an "I miss you" text to your ex"
"Fuck you James"
"You love me"
"Very debatable"
Aria sent the text right before turning off her phone and rolling her eyes.
"Come oooon that was fun" Kaden teased her.
"Oh Lee, you forget I have pretty heavy blackmailing material on you"
"You wouldn't do it"
"Oh wouldn't I?"
"Ok now I'm curious, what does Adria have on Lee?" Emery said laughing at Kaden's face who kept getting redder and redder.
Donovan thought he looked adorable.
It wasn't anything new for him really, to find Kaden the most beautiful human that has ever walked on earth.
He made his heart go crazy everytime he smiled, or laughed, or did anything really. And when he touched him...oh when he touched him.
It felt like stardust was being sprinkled in his stomach.
That's how everyone looked at Kaden, like the brightest star. The one who guided others in the dark, the one who managed to light up an entire room by just being there.
By just being.
And Donovan? He was undoubtedly the sun.
But what maybe most people forgot is that the sun is also a star, the most important for the earth but still.
And how couldn't a star so important like the sun help but love the burning red one that was Kaden?
And in what universe, could Kaden feel the same way about him?
In this one. Kaden would say if he had the power to read minds, which unfortunately he does not.
And if him or if Donovan did, they would have known that the other was thinking the exact same things.
Kaden always felt like a shadowy of his own making when he looked at Donovan.
There's a reason after all, that when someone asks us to name a star out first immediate thought is the sun.
So while during the day he was stuck being a burning star on the edge of collapsing into a black hole, the night he dreamt about the sun, even if he couldn't see him.
And oh, how he dreamt.
He dreamt of hands running through his hair and on his back. He dreamt of stolen kisses between classes and little moments under the covers. He dreamt of life like it wasn't from an inch away from him. Like he couldn't have it if only the wods "I'm in love with you" came out of his mouth.
Kaden wanted him. Kaden loved him. More the anything and it hurt being so close yet so far from him.
The night continued and the group of friends' laughs echoed through the night sky.
"Adria, truth or dare"
"Dare"
"I dare you to...kiss Kaden"
Donovan wasn't the jealous type. He knew Kaden and Aria were best friends and he knew Emery didn't do it for malice and he knew he doesn't have any claim over Kaden, even if he loved him since he was sixteen.
But oh the sun is made to burn and it doesn't care if it's from jealousy, or love, or both.
And he kept burning and burning and burning when he saw Aria roll her eyes and give Kaden a peck on the lips.
He thought he had calmed down. He really did until Karter decided to make his life even more miserable.
"Don, truth or dare?"
"Dare, I'm not a coward like some of you" He looked at Aria and Maeve who would to anything to avoid a dare. Mostly because the didn't want to get up from the very comfortable spot on the floor they made each time with all the pillows they could find.
"I dare you to kiss Kaden"
He freezed.
He was about to say something but his star beat him to it.
"Come on Karter, give him something else" He said half laughing but there was something else behind it. Fear? Nervousness? You can call it what you want.
"Nooo it's a dare"
"It's ok, just give me something else" Donovan mumbled nervously. Karter did end up giving him something else but he didn't care.
Kaden didn't want to kiss him.
He kissed Aria without a problem, why not him?
After they had finished playing, him and Kaden went back to the dorm room they shared. His plan was to go to bed and keep sulking until-
"Ok, what is wrong with you?"
"What?"
"You've been acting weird ever since Karter gave you that dare and you've been a bitch to Aria."
Donovan didn't say anything.
"Well?"
"Why didn't you kiss me?"
"What?"
"You had no problem kissing Adria when it was her dare, why am I different?"
Kaden scoffed.
"That's what this is about? Come on." Seeing as Donovan looked dead serious about his point, Kaden just started fidgeting.
"I just didn't want to make you uncomfortable."
"Bullshit, you kissed Aria and she's your best friend. So tell me why wouldn't you do the same with me? Is it something wrong with me? Why wouldn't you-"
"Because I know it'd mean nothing to you" Kaden finally snapped. The star collapsing, bringing everything near it to destruction.
And that's when Donovan realised.
Oh.
Oh.
Kaden didn't kiss him not because it didn't mean anything to him, it's because he didn't thought it mattered to Donovan.
He sudden felt awful.
"Says who?"
"What?"
"Says who it doesn't mean nothing to me? Last time I checked you're not in my fucking head"
"What are you saying James?"
"I'm saying that-" He took a deep breath. He was just confessing his love for one of his closest friends, what could go wrong?
"I'm saying that it would mean something to me if you kissed me and I really, really wanted you to because I've been in love with you for years and you never caught on and I thought I didn't have a chance and-"
Kaden kissed him.
And oh that's what they mean in the movies when they say that kissing feels like fireworks are lit in you.
Kaden held on the the sides of his head while Donovan's hands found comfort in the other boy's sides.
They were so close, so close.
Kaden finally understood what it was like kissing the sun.
It felt like life, love, a burning sensation he couldn't quite describe and the knowledge that they started something more then friendship.
Something that would have the rest of the universe and all the other stars burn with jealousy.
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk.
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise.
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got.
