The Dance

Work Text:

The night of the school dance had come. Celia walked to Karter’s front door and knocked. Karter came out, wearing a black tuxedo and white dress shirt underneath. “Whoa,” Karter muttered seeing Celia’s dress, “You look beautiful,”

“Thanks,” Celia replied, blushing.
Her dress was a dark shade of blue and shimmered in the twilight. This is it, Karter thought, I’m gonna tell her at the dance. They began the walk to the school being careful not to mess up their clothes. Celia felt her hand slip into Karter’s, and smiled. His grip was firm, yet comforting. Just as they were about to walk inside, they spotted Lane and stopped. “So, you finally asked her out,” Lane said grinning,

“Well actually Celia did,” Karter replied, putting his free hand behind his neck,

“Wait-“ Celia said, realizing something, “What do you mean ‘finally’?”

“Nevermind,” Lane said in a mock mysterious tone, “I’ll let Karter tell you,”

Celia glanced at Karter for a moment, perplexed and then fixed her gaze on the door.
“Come on,” Karter said, eager to change the subject, “let’s go inside.”
As they walked inside, Celia felt that Karter’s palm was sweating, which was unusual. Normally Karter was calm and collected, not anxious or worried.
“Are you okay Karter?” Celia asked, concerned,

“That’s a first,” he replied jokingly, “I’m fine,”

“If you’re sure,”

As they entered the room a song began to play.

“Do you want to dance?” Karter asked, blushing a bit,

Celia thought a moment and then answered, “Yes,”

Celia put her other hand on Karter’s shoulder and abruptly felt Karter rest his hand on her waist. She followed Karter’s footsteps and Karter gradually brought them to the center of the gym. No words could describe the magical feeling of Celia’s as they danced. Suddenly, the music stopped.

“What’s going on?” Celia murmured quietly, She looked up and noticed Karter looking around the room. Making sure all eyes were on them, Karter asked loudly, “Everyone, could I have your attention please?”

Almost every students gaze was now fixed in Karter and Celia in the center of the gym.

“Celia,” he announced, “I don’t want to be just friends anymore,”

Celia looked down, unsure of what to say as Karter continued.

“We could be more than that Celia, because I-“ he paused blushing, his mouth forming a small smile, “I love you Celia,”

Celia’s cheeks flushed a light shade of pink. “Wait wha-“

she was cut off by Karter pulling her closer to him and kissing her. Celia’s face turned bright red as she kissed him back, embracing him as she did. Celia’s lips felt soft against Karter’s, and he couldn’t help but run his fingers through her hair.
