Room Planning

Summary:

Now that him and Doppo are dating, Hifumi thinks that the apartment needs a bit of renovation

Work Text:

It was perfect! Hifumi had an immaculate plan for transforming the living space around him into something even better! It had taken all day that had dipped into the evening but he had finalized some furniture and come up with a (rather large)budget. Now, he just had to get approval from his housemate. Hifumi knew that Doppo would be fine with it all, it wasn’t like he cared much for the exact shade of the wallpaper or texture of the couch as much as Hifumi did - Doppo’s imagination stayed within the confines of his own wallet.

There was one thing he knew Doppo would be divided on though. The pair had been dating for months now but it was like nothing had changed between them other than heated moments and stolen kisses. Hifumi wanted to hit the next natural stages of a relationship though, it felt like they were spending less and less time together. The spring season brought so much time away for the both of them. Doppo had many reports to work on for his company and Hifumi had to be the star of each of the club’s events.

As soon as Doppo walked in the door, Hifumi shoved his phone in his face. “Doppo-chin! Look at this!” Doppo gently pushed him aside and did the usual - kicking off his shoes, loosening his tie, sinking onto the couch, and yelling into a pillow. Hifumi would have to wait for him to get it all out before he could show him his proposition. For now, he just kissed him on the cheek and provided him a warm embrace.

Doppo sighed and leaned into the hug. It was like he was back to normal already! Aside from his tousled hair and ever-growing eyebags. “What did you want to show me, Hifumi?”

“Right, I have some ideas on how to make this place even better!” Hifumi pointed around and discussed his grand plans for the apartment. A cooler painting here, new carpeting there, and maybe even a new sofa and coffee table? Hifumi’s salary could easily cover that tenfold.

“Why do you want to change this place? Isn’t it good as it is?”

He pouted and held onto Doppo’s arm tight. “It would be nice!”

“There’s something more to this. You’ve never just done something to do something, Hifumi.” Doppo looked through the shopping list again and noticed one thing written at the bottom of the list - a large bed. One bed. For the two of them to share. He blushed and shoved the list back in Hifumi’s hands. “Wow. It makes a bit of sense now…”

 “So? What do you think?”

“We can go shopping tomorrow.” Hifumi almost hugged the life out of him before remembering to finally make dinner.

There it was, sitting in the middle of the room. There was actually more space for other furniture in the bedroom now with the removal of the two beds before. Now there was just one. Hifumi had already claimed the left side which left the right side open for Doppo. For some reason, he felt too nervous about it.

They had done everything together! They had shared a bed together before but something about this was different this time. It was their personal space, they were together. Hifumi was his partner for the rest of his miserable life. The king of Shinjuku’s host world was somehow dating him of all people when the world was his oyster. Doppo sat down on the edge of the bed and looked over at him. Hifumi was already half-asleep over the fluffy pillows.

 Hifumi’s eyes fluttered open. “Doppo… it’s late already… c’mon!” he tugged on Doppo’s sleeve. ”I can’t sleep with the lights on…”

“I know, I know, hold on” Doppo flicked off the lights and cozied up in the bed next to him. Hifumi wrapped his warm arms around him and pulled him closer. He whispered in his ear, “Good night, Doppo-chin. Don’t have nightmares, ok?”

“I’ll try. Good night, Hifumi” Doppo surely didn’t have any nightmares that night with Hifumi directly beside him. Being enveloped in the warmth of Hifumi’s arms every night could easily beat out the warmth of a soulless blanket. Doppo preferred the cold air of the night to wash over him but there was no comfortable way to get the blanket off himself without disturbing his partner - just an issue of sharing a mattress, huh?

Doppo knew that nights like this wouldn’t happen often, the two of them were far too busy at opposite ends of the day for this to become routine. He couldn’t tell Hifumi he wanted this every night or he’d go off on some cheesy tangent about how he’s so sweet or kind or whatever.

The night was quiet, broken by the chirping of crickets outside and the occasional honking of taxi cars. Hifumi’s mellow breathing whispered in Doppo’s ears like music, yearning for him to fall asleep. The perfect ambience away from the deafening noise of the office. He had to sleep eventually, he’d regret it the next morning at work but this moment felt too perfect.

“Go to sleep, silly~” Hifumi had woken up in the time that Doppo had been staring at the ceiling. Hifumi propped himself on his side supported by his elbow. “What are you thinking about? Regretting something you said at work?”

“I don’t always think about work-”

“Then why aren’t you sleeping? What’s going on up here?” Hifumi playfully poked at his forehead.

“Stop that," Doppo swatted his hand away and sighed.

“I just wanna know…”

“Just can’t sleep. That’s it.”

Hifumi giggled and draped his chest over Doppo’s, no care for if he was restricting his breathing. “There’s more to that I bet… it’s because I’m right here, hm? Don’t want me to see just how ugly your bed hair can get? It's not that bad! It's super cute!"

“Only you can wake up in the middle of the night and give me a monologue about something stupid.”

“And you love me for it! Maybe if I keep going on and on you’ll fall asleep,” Hifumi did just that. He kept his voice to an excited murmur, recounting the most trivial of interactions from his week in vivid detail. Doppo could tell that he was trying to bore him to sleep which worked.

Doppo woke up the next morning with an arm outstretched over nothing. He could hear the sound of sizzling and crackling from the kitchen, Hifumi always woke up so much earlier than him to get started on breakfast. His arm had fallen asleep too, Hifumi probably held onto it tight while they were asleep, of course he did. Hifumi would give him anything but personal space even when in deep slumber.

Hifumi peeked his head through the doorframe as he did everyday in that pastel apron with a spatula in hand. “Wake up, silly! Just because it’s the weekend doesn’t mean I’ll let you off the hook!”

He couldn’t just lay around and reflect on the night anymore, despite how his heart was beating just as fast as it was for their first kiss. Unless he- “Hey! Wait-”

Doppo pulled Hifumi back and spooned him. “Just give me an hour.”

“Ok, fine… just let me turn off the stove.”
