Work Text:
Giddy footsteps echoed through the halls of the plex, other employees barely spared a glance at their coworker, having their own business to deal with getting their stations ready for the holiday.
Mileena could barely keep the grin off her face, adjusting the bag on her shoulder as she hurried to the daycare. Her mind kept drifting to the little surprise in her bag. She had spent way longer than she should have with how simple it was, but she was proud of it anyway! It took everything in her to shake those thoughts. If she walked into the daycare with this stupid smile on her face, Sun would no doubt know something was up, and that would ruin her plan!
Her boys had recently confessed that they had never spent Valentine's Day with anyone before. Sure they got stuff from the kids, but they'd never had another adult give them anything for the holiday. They had both seen the looks parents would give each other when picking up their kids, eyes filled with devotion and undying love before the doors were closed, and they were left with cleaning up all the decorations they had spent so much time making and hanging up, all to be swept away like nothing.
After hearing this, Mileena was determined to make something for them both! She may not have had the funds to spoil them like she wanted, nor did Sun or Moon wish for her to drain her bank account dry for them, but she sure as hell wasn't gonna let them go through another Valentine's Day without a special gift! What kind of partner would she be if she didn't shower her loves with all the affection she could give?
The large wooden doors appeared quickly, and she grimaced at the squeak her shoes made when she skid to a stop on the tile. Mileena flipped open her bag to glance one more time at her surprise, pulling open the folder she had slipped it in to protect it from getting squished and wrinkled. A simple, handmade card. A folded white piece of paper, pink heart stickers covering the front and surrounding the bright yellow name written in the center, the sweet and sappy contents hidden inside. There was another one tucked safely behind it, but that would be saved for a different individual later. Maybe she had gone to the craft store for the stickers, but who's to say she didn't already have them? No one would know!
Muffled bells jingled from behind the door and she froze, worried she was gonna be caught before she could even get inside, and sighed in relief as the sound passed and grew further. Sun was probably still getting stuff ready. ‘Always working to the last minute’, she thought fondly. She carefully slipped the folder back into her bag and finally pushed into the daycare, quickly slipping off her bag behind the security desk before going in search of the solar animatronic, admiring all the colorful hearts strung around the daycare as she went.
“Suuuun! I'm here!” Mileena cupped her hands around her mouth as she called out, dropping them when she heard the telltale sign of machinery and bells come closer fast.
He was around the play structure in an instant, a large smile splitting his face the moment he laid eyes on her “Sunshiiiiine!” Large hands quickly upon her and lifting her into a tight embrace “Happy Valentine's Day, my sweet little flower!”
“Happy Valentine's Day, Sun!” She laughed, wrapping tightly around him in turn.
“I'm so so so excited to show you what I have planned for the little stars! Oh I have all the paper, colored and plain ol’ white, stickers, markers, colored pencils, glitter pens, glitter glue, stamps, crayons, everything the little ones will need to make their own valentines cards for their friends and family!”
Mileena just let him go on and on, staring fondly as his rays spun excitedly with everything he listed and then some. Sure she may not enjoy children as much as her partners did, but she loved listening to how passionate he was about ensuring the kids had a blast with every activity.
She only spoke when it was clear he had finished, not without giving him a quick kiss though “That sounds amazing, Sun! I'm sure the kids will have a blast! I love all the decorations you've put up too!”
His rays started to spin again, accompanied by an orange glow as he blushed and giggled at the praise and affection, adjusting her in his arms as he walked them both back to the desk “Why thank you, Starlight! Moonie is excited too! He has a special story ready for naptime!”
“Ooooo! What is it?”
“Nu-uh, Sunshine~! That would ruin the surprise!” He teased, setting her down and tapping her nose.
Mileena poked her tongue out in rebuttal, snickering at the offended gasp she earned.
“Speaking of surprises~” She rocked on her heels, keeping her gaze off Sun, but catching his head tilt. She wouldn't be able to hold it if she caught his eye, spinning on one leg and marching with her arms crossed behind her back around the desk, hearing him follow after her like a duckling and pause at the edge as she began to dig into her bag. The folder stayed hidden, blocked by her body and slipping the card out, keeping it behind her back as she snapped back around to face Sun with a subtle pink tint to her face, who was fiddling with the ribbons on his wrists.
“This” Slowly pulling the card around to present to him “is for you”
He seemed to freeze at the sight of it, joints locking in place, not a sway or fidget in sight. Mileena froze too, but for a different reason.
Did he not like it?
He didn't even look inside yet.
Did she break him?!
No, his fans were still running, though maybe they were a little fast-
He suddenly sprang back to life with a dramatic gasp, making her flinch back and stare as he jumped away, hurriedly snapping the tether in place before soaring onto the balcony and disappearing behind the curtain within the blink of an eye.
That was… a reaction…
She wandered out from behind the desk, staring up at where her partner had fled to, card still in hand, pressed carefully to her chest.
Sun returned as fast as he left, leaping from the balcony, but using the tether to slow his descent instead of landing in the ballpit like he normally did, hands tucked behind his back. He snapped to a halt in front of her, chest plate heaving with simulated breaths.
They stared at each other, matching surprised expressions on them both, before a grin steadily grew on Sun's face and a breathy laugh escaped his voice box, bringing his arms around to reveal his own homemade card, colored pencil hearts covering the front along with a familiar name.
“I have one for you too!”
It was Mileena’s turn to freeze in shock, jaw dropping, before she started to laugh as well, cheeks flushing as her shoulders shook. Sun's rays glowing bright at the lovely sound. He didn't think his smile could get any bigger without breaking his casing!
“I was planning to surprise you!” He admitted.
“Great minds think alike then!” She snorted.
Only after they calmed down did they try to speak again, Mileena too afraid she was gonna speak in incomprehensible wheezes, and Sun too afraid he might blow a fuse.
“Does Moon have a surprise card for me as well?” Trying not to laugh again as she spoke.
“I will neither confirm nor deny that!” He lifted onto the tips of his shoes while looking to the side, and she just knew Moon was hounding him to not give anything away with how his rays twitched “Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't! Maybe it's something completely different! Who knows!”
“Alright alright, I get it!” Mileena giggled, offering her card out again.
An elated smile grew on Sun's face, accepting her card while handing over his own. The larger bot leaning over to give her forehead a kiss, similar to what she had given him earlier, and earned a happy hum.
“Thank you, Sun”
“Thank you, Sunshine”
