“Yeah. That’s totally valid,” Rayne said softly, watching Samael intently.
He met her purple gaze and couldn’t help but smile. As much as he was upset about Kenny, her presence made everything a little more secure. It was times like these where he still couldn’t believe she was really back.
He watched as Rayne’s eyes widened at his smile. She hesitated for a moment, and Samael wondered what she was thinking. And then she was hugging him.
He couldn’t help but feel a little startled as her arms wrapped around his neck in a gentle embrace. He could feel her bury her face into his shoulder. He slowly returned the gesture, wrapping his own arms around her waist, holding her a little closer to him.
Nostalgia crept into his mind as they embraced. He remembered the night before she left. They had talked and hugged just as they had now. He remembered the peace he felt in those moments, similarly to how he was feeling now. The feeling grew, and he felt inclined to hold her tighter, to not let her leave him again as she had before.
And then he felt her whole body twitch violently once. He immediately loosened his hold on her, alarmed. She pulled back sharply, taking his shoulders in her hands and shoving him back. Her softened gaze had transformed into a menacing glare. Samael felt a tingle of apprehension go down his spine.
“What the…” whispered Rayne.
Sam watched as she looked at him fearfully. “Rayne…?”
“Who are-?”
Suddenly Rayne’s eyes widened profusely, leaving a terrifying blank expression on her face.
“Rayne, what is happen-”
Her body twitched as he spoke, and then her blank widened eyes closed. Sam felt his head thump once as she went limp and started to fall backwards. He lurched forward and caught her before she could hit the ground.
He held her limp body and cupped her cheek with his hand. It was cold.
“Rayne?!” he shouted, dread and panic taking over his thoughts. He took her wrist and pressed hard into the artery to indicate a pulse. There was one, but it was extremely weak and inconsistent.
“Oh my fucking god. Oh my god.” Sam's hands started to shake and he rocked back and forth slightly, still holding her limp body, trying not to lose it. “Rayne.” She wouldn’t budge.
His heart rate accelerated tremendously. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know whether or not to take her to Adon. He knew if he did, there was a very likely chance that he wouldn’t see her again, either from her death or Adon's taking advantage of her weakened state to experiment on her. Who could help him? Who could help her? What was even happening to her?
