Chapter Text
Ahh, this was easily Uzi’s favourite time of the day.
After the nagging from her dad, “you need to find a job!”, ”What about doors?!”, after the stress of everything, she could just curl up in N’s arms.
N loved this as well, of course.
Just holding her, feeling her warmth?
That’s the best feeling ever for N!
Though, at the current moment, he seemed… off.
Not sad, just a bit out of it.
Uzi obviously noticed. She found it very easy to tell when her husband had something on his mind.
Uzi moved her face up out of his chest.
“N? Something’s wrong with my favourite lil drone and that’s not okay. What’s up?”
N gulped softly, looking down at her face.
“Hey, you don’t have to tell me, I just wanna make sure.”
N knew he could, should, and would tell her.
“So, this is gonna sound weird, but did you… keep the USB?”
Uzi went silent for a moment.
“You mean…” she looked over to the bedside table, spotted it, and nodded towards it before looking back to N. “That USB? Yeah, why?”
N nervously gave a single laugh.
“N-no reason.” He stuttered out, anxiously looking away. Even though he was facing away, his golden blush was still evident.
Uzi wrapped herself tighter around him.
It was painfully obvious what was on his mind.
Uzi thought she knew, but just couldn’t believe it.
THREE DAYS AGO
V barged into Uzi’s house.
She had been at Lizzy’s for… slightly longer than planned, so it was very late now.
Which is why she was very surprised to see the purple one in the living room still.
She seemingly hadn’t noticed her come in.
A wide grin overtook her face as she began to focus on making her walk as quiet as possible. She snuck behind the armchair Uzi was on.
She still hadn’t noticed.
Ooh, the look on her face would be priceless! Now-
V had now just noticed Uzi was on her phone.
What could the harm be in just having a quick look over her shoulder? Sure, it’s not exactly 100% moral, but who really cares at the end of the day?
Oh.
Why was Uzi of all people looking up stuff about parenting?
Were her and N…?
Uzi flicked her head round, jumping harshly out of shock
“V?!”
She literally leaped off the seat, her phone flying on to the floor.
“Shit! H-how long were you there?”
She asked quietly.
V didn’t respond, silently crouching down and picking up her phone.
It wasn’t broken luckily, and still remained on the web browser.
V read the last search.
“how to tell ur husband u want a kid but don’t know if youll be good enough”
She didn’t react, knowing this was going to be a very sensitive topic for Uzi. She instead just wordlessly handed the phone back to her.
As much as they teased the living daylights out of eachother, they still did care, really.
“V, I-I can explain.”
“Uzi, there’s nothing to explain. Deep down, you want a kid, but are worrying.”
Got it in one.
The silence confirmed this, as Uzi nodded slowly.
V breathed out, sitting herself on the arm of the chair.
“Uzi, if you even have the slightest thought of having a kid, then you don’t need to worry about if you’ll be good enough. You get what I mean?”
“N-not really.”
V softly laughed at herself.
“All I’m trying to say is don’t worry about stuff like that. I could see you as a good mom, anyway.”
Uzi blushed lightly, thought to say “shuddup”, then just settled with a very quiet “really?”
V just nodded, before the room fell into a deep silence. They sat still for a few moments, before V stoop up off the arm.
Uzi got up too, to return to the sleeping beauty himself, N. She paused as she arrived to the bedroom door.
“Please don’t tell anyone about this… ‘specially not Lizzy.”
“No promises!”
BACK TO THE PRESENT
She knew what N was truly thinking.
But she needed him to say, just to be sure.
“N…”
“Yes, ‘Zi?”
“T-tell me why you truly wanted to know about the USB. You can trust me..”
N exhaled, calming his nerves. He sat in silence, preparing to speak.
Uzi patiently waited, biding her time by hugging him tighter.
He eventually spoke up, a nervous whisper.
“I was thinking. I-if we took it away to the place, we would have…”
“A child.”
The couple became lathered in silence again. Both visors displayed warm blush, though neither could see the other.
Uzi moved her face out of his chest, receiving a gentle smile from N.
“You… were thinking of us having a kid? For how long?”
N shrugged.
“N, you should’ve said earlier!”
It took a second for N to clock what she actually said.
“Wait, you’re not against it?”
“I-I guess not.. I just don’t know if I would actually be a good mum.”
N suddenly held her as tight as possible.
“Uzi, you’d be great!”
Uzi didn’t respond, just nuzzling herself closer to him. She remembered what V said, and now N. But something just made her hesitant. Just a part of her saying she wouldn’t be good enough.
“I could imagine you holding one of those lil beans! You’d look after it so well!!” N praised, trying to cheer her up.
Uzi just stayed hidden in his arms. She was having one of her times where she wished she could just curl up and scream.
N didn’t quite know what to do, but he tried his very hardest to comfort her.
Of course, this was by holding her, with the added pizzazz of whispering sweet nothings.
“Take your time.”
And Uzi did.
She tried to follow her own advice to N about focusing on breathing, tried, but quickly got distracted.
I mean, a child?
How could she..?
What…?
Would she…?
She scrapped all this denial in herself, confiding in N. She trusted N more than herself.
She looked out of N’s body again.
“I-I… I want a kid… I just don’t think I would be good as a mother at all…”
There, she said it.
N quickly began comforting her intensely.
“‘Zi, I love absolutely everything about you, but please, stop lying to yourself. This all about not being a good mother? Nonsense. I know you, Uzi. You would be such a caring, loving mom.” Uzi fidgeted slightly. He sounded so sure. Most of her said she’d be fine.
It was just one small nagging part of her head, being a right negative Nancy.
But when did Uzi ever listen to anyone? (Excluding N.)
She smiled at him, who just smiled back warmer.
”This goof seems so sure… I trust him.”
And, almost like that, that stupid negative part of her mind was gone.
-
They were no longer all snuggly now. This mildly miffed N.
But this minor disappointment was easily overshadowed by the pure joy of preparing for a baby. A baby!
Someone knocked on the front door.
Huh? They weren’t expecting anyone?
Thad welcomed himself in.
“Hey hey hey! Hear someone’s planning on something big, hmm?”
Okay, who told Thad?
“Thad! How do you know? Was it V?” Uzi shouted.
”Huh? Nah, it was Lizzy.”
Uzi put it together in her head.
V knew from that time a couple of nights ago, had told Lizzy, and Lizzy had told Thad.
”Who else knows?!”
”No one. That I know for sure.”
Uzi sighed. Thank god it hadn’t gone on the internet or something.
“But anyways, congrats you two!”
Thad could sense he wasn’t exactly needed.
”I’ll leave you two to it. Just call uncle Thad if you need anything!”
”THAD YOU ARE NOT BEING AN UNCLE TO THIS KID!” Uzi shouted as he left.
N looked at Uzi.
”How did Lizzy know then?”
Uzi explained her and V’s conversation.
N nodded.
”So V just sorta guessed we would actually do it sooner rather than later?”
Uzi nodded with a little grin.
”Seems like her.”
-
Time passed, and Uzi felt herself growing more and more confident about this kid, and moreso being a mother.
Uzi sprung her head off whatever she was doing on her phone, smiling widely.
“The place said we can make an appointment tomorrow.”
She watched N’s reaction carefully, stifling her giggle as he lit up.
“Tomorrow? That’s so soon! I’m so excited, ‘Zi!”
“Me too. Me too!” She hesitated slightly, before repeating herself with his same level of confidence.
She stood up and sat back next to him, resting the back of her head against him. He set his hand onto her fluffy hair, running his fingers gently through.
“Hey, N, I know I had my woes, but like.. what about you? Do you have any worries?”
N stayed mute for a moment, before responding.
“I guess… sorta.”
Uzi rolled over so she could face him, gaining a gentle, yet worried, smile.
“I just worry something could go wrong with the kid… like because we are so physically… different.”
“N, just because we’re ‘physically different’ doesn’t mean anything. Yes, we look a little bit different, but I could never get closer to anyone else.”
N nodded, his body calming. “Anyway, the only bits that matter in the USB won’t be the bad parts. Not that you have any.” He stayed mute but eventually started laughing.
“Aww, look at my cute little sappy wife!”
“Shuddup!”
She rolled back over, blushing, exaggerating a “harumph”.
She checked the time.
How was it so late already?
She shuffled herself closer to N, who quickly embraced his hands around her waist.
She wriggled away momentarily, grabbing the pair of wires. She offered one to N, as they simultaneously plugged themselves in. Uzi shuffled her way back closer, feeling N’s arms wrap around her once more.
-
N shook Uzi awake, only to receive a soft grumble.
“C’mon Uzi, it’s already a lil late.”
“A lil late” to N was 7 am, so Uzi’s grumpiness was completely justifiable.
Uzi just responded with another grumble.
She was still tired, and didn’t want to stop cuddling in the warmth.
“Nnnnn,” she rolled his name in dreariness. “Today’s gonna be… exhausting probably, so let me cuddle my husband for just 5 more minutes. Please?”
Well, how could N deny her there?
He nodded to himself, pulling her closer.
He was on his back, facing the ceiling, and Uzi was sort of on her front, half on the bed and half on N. She had one arm to her side, the other slumped over N’s shoulder. One of her legs stayed straight stretched out, while the other bent to rest atop N’s own legs.
She closed her eyes again.
N couldn’t help but grin as he watched her face move from a grumpy one, to a soft smile.
He leant forwards, kissing her forehead. Her smile grew wider.
She stayed curled in his arms for much more than “just 5 more minutes”, but there really was no rush.
Uzi was still slightly reluctant when N suggested they should make a move, but did agree.
They stood up, stretching, before making their way out of the bedroom.
Khan was already gone, so they didn’t have to deal with that debacle of explaining where they’re going. Not today, at least. Hopefully.
Uzi’s phone suddenly started ringing.
She quickly put it to her ear.
She nodded, smiled, gave a phone-voice “yes thank you” to whoever was on the other end of the line, then pressed a button to hang up.
She looked at N, a glum look on her face.
N instantly grew weary.
What happened?
What was wrong?
Uzi’s upset expression quickly turned joyous, as she laughed.
“Oh, you shoulda seen your face. It’s all fine N, we’ve got an appointment just fine, in a lil bit.”
N ran up to her, squeezing her tightly. She was soon set back down on the floor, coughing from laughter.
“Jeez N, and I’m the sappy one?” She recalled from last night, a very faint blush on her visor.
-
“Okay N, you know how I get with this lovey-dovey stuff in public. Get it all out of your system now.” She almost demanded, yet still very soft-spoken.
N quickly embraced her, layering her cheek with kiss after kiss.
“But Uzi, what about the wedding? That was in public and you were a sappy mess!”
Uzi blushed.
“Well, there was alcohol, and it was our fricken wedding! That’s different.” She exhaled heavily.
N let out a single laugh at her sulky face, giving her one last kiss.
“Love ya, Uzi.”
“…Love you too.”
They opened the door, marching their way through the colony.
Their hands were firmly together.
Yes Uzi said no lovey dovey stuff, but she could handle hand-holding .
Anyway, she needed the light reassurance right now.
The other of Uzi’s hands was in her pocket, holding the USB.
It was very odd.
I mean, that was most likely going to be her and N’s baby by the end of they day.
So she was naturally very protective over it, not letting it out of her fingers.
And then they were there.
A neon sign hung above the door of the place, displaying a sleek emblem of an untrained neural network, a bean as N affectionally called them.
He gave Uzi’s hand a gentle squeeze, followed by a delicate shoulder nudge.
”Ready, ‘Zi?”
She simply nodded.
-
The waiting room was completely empty of any other drones, bar the young looking blonde drone sat at the desk.
They looked up from the typing of the computer to N and Uzi.
“Ah, Mr and Mrs Doorman, correct?” They spoke in a slightly posh, yet friendly manner.
The couple nodded in harmony.
“Ah, good to see you. You’re the only couple booked for today, so we should be relatively quick. Please, take a seat.”
They followed the instructions of the receptionist, sitting on two of the chairs.
The receptionist left the room, leaving them in a warm silence.
N placed his hand on Uzi’s shoulder.
”You good?”
She beamed a soft smile and nodded.
”You?”
”You know it.”
His hand moved from her shoulder, back to her hand. He smiled as he leant his head sideways to rest against her.
The receptionist soon came back, followed by an older drone.
”Doorman’s?” The older drone asked out. N got up, offering his hand out to pull Uzi up.
They wondered over to the drone, who led them through a door to another room.
He held out his hand o both of them.
”I’m Doctor Smith, but please, just call me Derrick. Anyway, I’ll be helping you two through this process today.”
They both nodded.
“So, we just need a quick check on your law records and we’ll be well on our way.”
The receptionist, who must also be the assistant, handed him a small book-sized screen.
“So N, obviously you’ve killed quite a few people,”
N gulped. He hoped with his whole very soul this wouldn’t mess with anything.
”Buuuut, it was before you were legally part of the colony, so we can just scratch that off.”
N grinned. He liked this Doctor’s attitude.
”Now Mrs Doorman.”
Uzi nervously looked at him.
”We’ve got here… what’ve we got? Ah, manslaughter, cannibalism… eh, we’ll just chock that up to nothing. Who hasn’t got a couple of felonies, amiright?”
Uzi sighed in relief.
Apparently the colony hadn’t had any new worker members in years, so the nursery were desperate for any sort of job.
”Sorry for that hassle, it’s a legal thing we don’t really follow strictly. Anyways, everyone knows you two, you ain’t gonna harm the thing.”
”So we just gotta wait for my assistant to check the machines and then we’ll just get on with it.”
-
As mentioned, the nursery hadn’t been in use for years.
This unfortunately for N and Uzi meant the machines needed much more rigorous testing.
This was… not the greatest for Uzi’s short attention span.
N watched in nervous husband mode as she fidgeted around in her chair.
“Uzi, I know what you said about sappy stuff in public but,”
He panned his head around the empty room, then looking back to Uzi.
”Surely this doesn’t count as public.”
Uzi smiled.
“Just say you wanna kiss me.”
They of course did kiss.
“I really, really love you.” Proclaimed N.
”Love you too, dork.”
She responded, playfully squeezing his cheeks.
She flicked her eyes to the time.
”How much longeeerrr?”
N shrugged.
At that moment Dr Smith entered the room.
He cleared his throat before starting.
”All machines are properly functioning. In your own time, hand the USB to my assistant over here, and we’ll keep you updated. Sound good?”
They nodded quickly before he had even finished speaking. They turned to eachother, giving one final weightless kiss.
Uzi reached into her pocket, gently holding the USB. She presented it to to N, who, instead of taking it out of her hand, took her hand, so they were both holding it.
”Together?”
They wandered to the desk where the still unidentified assistant sent. They placed their hand on the desk, gently loosening to give The USB to the other drone.
They didn’t fully release the other’s hand though, of course not.
The assistant exited the room, quickly reappearing.
“We’ll update you soon.”
-
“The body has been made.”
”We are now starting to upload the basic neural network”
“The basic neural network is 50% done.”
“The basic neural network is finished. Uploading of the parent personality- the USB- starting now. This is the bit that takes the longest, sorry for any inconvenience.”
They had resorted to the classic high-school ways of wasting time. The one and only Tic Tac Toe. Or Noughts and Crosses. Whatever you want to call it.
Main difference being they were playing on their visors.
N hadn’t realised that it was impossible for the second player to win, which was making him a tad confused.
Uzi decided to let N win, and his reaction was just adorable. He sprung up, celebrating loudly.
Uzi pulled out her phone, smirking as she watched N’s eyes intensely follow it.
She handed it to him.
”Play some of that Plants vs Zombies. You’re pretty far through, right?”
N nodded joyfully, still on the high of the earlier victory.
Really Uzi just wanted him to play because he had the absolute cutest face when he focused.
N opened the app, instantly loading into a level.
He quickly got stuck in, immersing himself in the game.
Uzi was just admiring him. Everything about him.
She suddenly had one of her evil, absolutely pure diabolical ideas, an idea from the depths of hell.
Just as he became as concentrated as possible, she gave him a light peck to the lips.
He momentarily froze, before golden blush took his eyes.
A cry of “no” played from the phone, signaling he had died in game.
Uzi just giggled.
”No, I’m supposed to be the blushy embarrassed one.” She jested.
And N would quickly make that statement true, abruptly locking his mouth with hers.
It both shut her mild teasing up, and easily made her the “blushy embarrassed one” again.
After separating his lips, he just smiled, resting his head on her shoulder.
”The USB upload is complete. We just have to run some tests, and you’re all done.”
Uzi blush faded almost the second the assistant poked their head round the door.
They looked at eachother again.
Their baby, their child was practically done. They both knew, and were overwhelmed and overjoyed. Their grins were tell-tale signs of this.
They waited patiently, nerves making them shake.
They held eachother in comfort.
N kissed her hair once again.
Dr. Smith walked through the door, a chirpy spring in his step.
He quickly made his way to the couple.
“Mr and Mrs Doorman. I am proud to announce you are the mother and father of a perfectly healthy baby girl.”
He gave the pair time to react.
And thank god he did, they definitely needed it.
Uzi was pretty much squealing as she both squeezed and got squeezed by N.
N was tightly hugging her, crying into her hair. Definitely not sad tears, poor boy was just absolutely overwhelmed by emotion.
They eventually parted, and Uzi wiped the digital tears of his visor.
Dr. Smith spoke up again.
”If you two could follow me.”
-
They wandered at a moderate pace behind him, through the hallways. They made it to a room.
Dr. Smith slid a keycards in front of a panel by the door, letting them inside before joining them.
He leant against the corner of the room, not wanting to interfere with this extremely personal moment for the two of them.
He was mostly just there for safety reasons.
N and Uzi looked at the machine, a door on the front of it. They approached and arrived at the same time, lifting the door simultaneously.
And there, in a soft padded cubbyhole, sat their little one.
N allowed Uzi to hold her first, watching with love as she pulled her out and cradled her in her arms.
The circular door flicked on, displaying its neutral eyes.
Lilac.
Made sense, Uzi’s were purple and N’s were originally white.
They didn’t think about that, they had both just gained a new favourite colour.
Uzi just stared, absolutely enamoured by the pill-shaped child in her arms.
She didn’t know they were so tiny.
She just had the greatest urge to protect it. From everyone.
Everyone but N, of course.
She noticed his stare, and offered the child into his arms.
”Hey lil bean.” He cooed, smiling warmly at her in his arms.
They both took turns holding and cooing her (Uzi needed the tiniest amount of encouragement to talk down to their baby, but N quickly convinced her.), and they both looked at the drone in the corner.
”You can leave, y’know.”
They looked at eachother blankly, before laughing softly.
-
Uzi was back to holding her, as they walked out of the nursery.
”Thanks Doctor Darren!” N waved back.
They began walking home.
Everywhere in the colony was pure silence, just desolate hallways.
Well, that’s how it was for N and Uzi.
Just them and the world.
N wrapped his arm behind Uzi’s shoulders, silent.
He stayed silent, just admiring the both of them.
”Love you…”
”Who?”
Uzi giggled watching N’s slight confusion.
They silently slid back into their home.
They sat on the couch, side by side.
”You wanna hold her?”
”God yes.”
He softly took the small drone into his arms, slowly swaying. He brung her close to his face, smiling.
”Little biscuit!”

Uzi put her phone back into her pocket.
”Uzi look! She’s smiling!”
Uzi quickly shuffled next to N, laughing as she watched the visor in his arms look at her and then turn into upward facing crescents.
He wasn’t wrong, she was smiling!
Uzi smacked her hand to her chest, feeling like she was about to die from happiness.
-
N was content just gently rocking her in his arms. Smiling, he looked back over to Uzi.
“I think she might just be cuter than you…”
Uzi didn’t know how to respond to that. Partly from actual unsureness, mainly from tiredness. She still softly blushed.
N turned back to his arms, and frowned as he spotted the small battery icon at the top right of her visor.
”How do we charge her?”
Uzi thought for a moment.
”Oh shit, we need to go get the thing with the thing.”
N looked at her confused.
Uzi continued,
“It’s like a crib cot thing that has like a wireless charger built into it.”
N nodded. He wordlessly passed their child to her, standing up.
”Where are you going?”
”To see if I can get one of these special cribs. Alright, cya, love you, bye!”
-
N was sprinting back home, but there was no rush. He was just desperate to get back home to his two favourite girls.
He wasn’t able to get one, but he had managed to find a place to buy one. Trouble was, he forgot to take any money.
Plus, it was very late now.
He effortlessly opened the front door, closing it carefully behind him.
“I’m home!”
No response.
Heck, they were nowhere to be seen at all.
N began to get worried.
What if someone had broken in or something?
What if they had suddenly fallen ill in the five minutes he was gone?
What if…
Nevermind, there they are!
Uzi and the yet-to-be named child, cuddled up in bed.
Were they asleep already?
N silently crept towards Uzi, sighing as he spotted both bright visors displaying a simple sleep mode message.
Though, while Uzi’s did say “sleep mode”, the little pill in her arms didn’t. Little thing hadn’t learned English at all yet, so it was just general gibberish and jargin.
N carefully pinched Uzi’s phone, unlocking it, and opening the group chat once again.
He snapped a quick picture of the sleeping Uzi, making sure both visors were in frame.
He quickly typed a caption.

N put the phone down, turning it off.
He couldn’t handle the other’s energy right now.
Especially not when he had an extremely important job to do.
Which was, ahem, cuddle his wife and kid. Very difficult, I know.
He looked back at them and smiled.
Yep, that’s going in the permanent memory bank.
His Uzi, his wife, having her first sleep with their daughter?
He couldn’t help himself anymore.
He crawled over the top of Uzi, maneuvering himself so he was holding both of them.
With a final few wiggles and adjustments, they all fell completely still.
They were in a position quite familiar to N and Uzi. Curled up, Uzi burying her face in N’s chest. Now, obviously, was different. They were slightly further apart, to compensate for the child in between them, nestled in the warmest spot, against Uzi’s chest and N’s lower body.
N had one hand stroking the thick fluffy purple locks in front of him gently, the other delicately resting on the child.
“…love you… both of you…” he murmured, only just realising what Uzi meant earlier.
He was briskly whisked into a deep slumber, not willing to move an inch.
Well, his hands sometimes stroked Uzi’s back, or give her scalp a sleep-kiss, but that doesn’t count, ok?!
Even asleep, N found that occasionally he would still accidentally say something.
At this moment, it was quiet “love you”’s, but they eventually paused as he fell deeper asleep.
One last one.
“Love you…”
And then they just slept.
