Since the early days of the creation of this world, the myth around the efficacy of soulmate marks has been questioned.
Some legends said how the divinities created this specific system to differentiate the souls belonging together, even if their partner was out of reach. None dare to refuse this blessing offered by the godheads, accepting their fate by trusting the power of this endless love. If some stories could remain in the unforgettable tales, others would fade with the decades…
——
Izuku Midoriya was a small boy living in a remote house, located near the entrance of the forest and the welcoming sound of the town a few meters away. It would make his days easier, especially during the harvest season when his mother would bring him to sell their products. Indeed, the neighborhood knew about this family who changed their lives overnight and decided to rewrite this story after their difficult past.
Hisahi’s voice kept replaying in Inko’s head, haunting her darkest days. This woman had never been someone lucky with life since her birth, but she found her ultimate goal after meeting Hisashi Midoriya, changing her life for the best…and the worse. If their habits had been better since their union, this illusion faded away after tiny green curls and freckled chubby cheeks appeared in Hisashi’s life.
“I don’t know how or even why my feelings for you started to change, but don’t put this pressure on my shoulders when I have something else to think about,” the taller man recalled with an exhausted glance, looking at the stunned woman under his eyes.
Inko was unable to answer, but the dark expression on her face revealed how impacted she was by the other’s words. He was supposed to be her husband and support her, not reject her presence in his life, especially when their son was still resting against her chest. The bags under his eyes were proof of her endless love for their son, the only human she’d love more than anyone.
“This pressure as you called it is your son, your blood. I won’t give you the right to disregard him when he did nothing wrong except being seen as a menace to your stupid brain.”
At that moment, Inko wasn’t even hiding the pain mixed with the anger in her eyes. She had known this man for years and his entire behavior started to change after the wedding…almost like he had his goal and got bored of her presence. He couldn’t think selfishly in this situation, not when a child's life was involved.
“This child is only a pain to my back, I only stayed because I needed to see if my doubts were right…but this flame faded away years ago,” he answered, crossing his arms like he knew his statement would take the curse of their lives to a no-return point. He didn’t even care about the consequences of his words, even if this meant facing the teary eyes of his wife.
“I used to think how wearing your family name was a prize offered by the divinities, assuring our protection but I was wrong.” She made a bitter laugh, holding the baby in her arms like he was the only thing she could hold on to. The tiny fingers grabbed her shirt, his emerald eyes becoming sadder, feeling the connection with his mother. “I avoided my fate by ignoring the lines written in my mind for years, offering you a chance but maybe I should’ve run away that day and joined him instead of leaving my soulmate behind.”
“We both knew how his stupid decision led him to his death. Think about it, maybe you’ll be the one joining him in his death but you chose the security by staying here…you’re the one to blame…”
Although Hisashi’s words were rude, it was the truth. Inko Midoriya wasn’t the king of regrets, but the background behind this misery started to appear like one. Back in the day, she had this strong connection with her soulmate, someone she trusted and who even asked her to run away together. The innocent and vulnerable soul decided to stay on Hisashi’s side because he had been begging her to choose him…later, these tears revealed a darker side of this regretful choice.
“My life would’ve been shorter but happier,” she objected with a broken look. “I don’t regret having Izuku because he’s the best thing that’s ever been mine but I won’t let you disrespect him in this house. You can choose to change and stay in these walls or leave by the door and never reach our lives again.”
The same day, Hisashi Midoriya left without saying goodbye to his family, revealing how his selfishness was his priority. Indeed, Inko Midoriya was the strongest person the freckled boy had ever seen, despite the hidden tears she would shed only when she thought no one was looking.
She didn’t fight back when his small hands grabbed his mother’s, hearing how they’d leave this part of their journey in the past and start a new one…together without any pain.
Years went by and the curiosity of the small boy led him to be the cutest farmer in this area of the country. It was mostly hidden and the only conversation Izuku could have was with the wind, but that didn’t bother him either. He simply enjoyed his sweet little life, being a farmer and helping his mother.
At the age of four, fate automatically gave you a soulmate mark, something you couldn’t avoid, whether you hated your fate or embraced it. Izuku remembered how a dragon symbol appeared on his wrist and caught his entire attention: the lines of the drawings seemed thin enough to resemble a tattoo, while the color of red was similar to the precious stones that miners brought back from the mine. However, the minimalism of the symbol was captivating enough to wonder who this person with such an imposing aura could be.
The symbol wouldn’t be enough to describe the excitement building in the young boy’s chest, as he rushed toward his mother to share the good news. That day, Inko smiled and listened to the wild imagination of her son. In his childhood, Izuku used to think the person behind this symbol was someone stronger than anyone, able to win any fight with the aura of a dragon, making his presence unforgettable.
“Mom…What if I marry a dragon? Would you still love me the same ?” The small boy asked with curious eyes, looking into the shining one of his mother.
Inko had made a few mistakes in the past, but she would never change this life, especially because her son was her everything. This woman would win the awe-filled gaze and admiration of her son every time she entered the room. She was secretly hoping Izuku would share the same gaze with the soulmate waiting for him.
“Oh sweetie, you know I would still love you even if the world is against you,” she answered. The tenderness in her voice melted the boy’s heart, laughing when her fingers pinched his tiny nose. “I would gladly welcome your dragon soulmate and he’ll tell me about his travels around the world.”
Izuku’s eyes shone at her words, before falling shut as he relaxed at the gentle hands on his back. His younger self made a promise to find his soulmate and make his mother proud! Since that age, the small boy started to fantasize about who this person designed as his other half and what the missing piece could be.
There was no magical dragon anymore, but the idea of a soul sweet enough to love someone like him remained. Life had never been easy, especially when it came to love, but Izuku already relied on this mark on his skin, reminding him how someone was waiting for him somewhere else.
——
The two lost souls allowed time to welcome the bags under their eyes because of the night work as well as the additional pressure on their shoulders. There was nothing perfect in this world and Izuku knew he had to fight for rights, especially in an economy like this.
From afar, Inko could observe the little boy she had held in her arms as he spoke of dragons, becoming a man by himself. He would always keep the same smile, even if time didn't do a favor for a wounded person like Inko. Today, she didn't regret having a child as strong as Izuku who made her proud just by breathing, but perhaps… she should have followed the path of her heart before the disease took her.
At the age of 19, Izuku Midoriya said his last goodbye to his mother.
Since that day, the house remained still cold, forcing the freckled man to focus on the only thing he had, the one thing that would never leave him behind. It was stupid to chase after silly dreams, but he needed to have the answers to his questions.
After a few years in the town he knew by heart, he decided to change his fate. Without thinking twice, he gathered his bags and gave a last goodbye to this house that used to cover all his laughter. He ended up finding a small house near the farm to continue his work, in the closest village: Wilderness.
It was a small place where everyone knew each other and would be supportive, even for a stranger like Izuku Midoriya, appearing out of nowhere. It took him a lot of time to adapt and accept the fact that he had his place here, even if a part of him was missing his mother. Years later, to change his mind, the freckled man started to ask a few questions about the owner of his soulmate's marks, wondering if anyone heard about a crimson dragon.
In this society, each symbol had a deep meaning about the other’s personality, but this one would always leave the others perplexed. It surprised him at first, thinking he did something wrong, but when the event repeated itself multiple times, it triggered something inside his soul.
The look in their eyes, as well as the glow they had previously, faded as quickly as it had arrived, giving more unanswered questions to Izuku. Each person he asked tried to get around the subject, even his friends seemed bewildered by the symbol. By the time Izuku was 21, he understood that this brand hid a much darker reality. There was no way to contact the owner, and the chances of answers were lowdown
Still, one night the young man decided to take his bag and start a new chapter of his life…
—--
He didn't know what to venture into or where it would lead him, but each of his thoughts guided him blindly into unknown landscapes. Millions of colors were drawn before his eyes, mixing shades of emerald green similar to his before watching the sunset, which signaled the end of the day. The wind would welcome his snoring, waking up by the warm rays of sunshine meeting his skin and observing the endless landscape appearing in his field of vision.
If everyone refused to answer his questions….He’d find the answers himself.
During his long walk and numerous talks, repeating the same exchange again and again, Izuku realized how crazy this situation was. The person connected to him would probably be a stranger but his heart wanted to believe in this hope, residing in his chest. Many people called him naive, recommending he roll up the road before it was too late, but Izuku couldn’t give up…not when he was getting closer to the truths he'd been looking for the entire time.
Don’t get him wrong, he wasn’t completely naive and could feel how there was a risk of facing obstacles. Still, armed with his motivation and his bag, he couldn't accept the failure. At the other end of the path, was perhaps the person who would make his heart beat until his last breath, or break it in a thousand pieces.
With only his determination and hope, he had unconsciously created a legend around his name alone.
He didn't realize it, but when his shadow passed through the neighboring cities and countries, repeating unceasingly the same words that had haunted him throughout this adventure, curious looks fell upon him. From time to time, whispers could be heard near him, forcing him to stay longer than expected, especially because of a lack of money. If some people had given him courage for the continuation of his adventure, some could only throw dark looks at him.... as if venturing into dangerous lands.
The taste of risk burned his tongue, but the magic resounded in his eyes, a symbol of innocence. With a slight smile tugging at the corner of his lips and his scarred hands wiping his sweat away, he realized how he was also doing this for his mom. Inko had always been supportive of this goal since his childhood, and he would give her justice by searching for this person occupying his mind. Something was poisoning about walking in an unknown direction, observing the sun rising with the shade of orange, highlighting the crimson color on his wrist. Sometimes he traced the symbol with his fingertips smiling and hoping someone was waiting for him at the end of the path, ignoring the slight pain in his chest.
Don’t get him wrong, he could face the reality of a potential rejection, but he couldn’t stay blinded by the silence. If there was a backstory between this dragon as everyone suggested, betraying themselves with their pale gaze, Izuku would solve this mystery. After all, it wasn’t so different from the adventures he had in the woods when he was a child, chasing after mysterious monsters and protecting his imaginary kingdom. This time, it would be another kind of roleplay for his younger self, still shining at the idea of facing an actual reward at the end of the journey. Back in the day, the smile of his mother would be the comforting prize, but this time it would be the physical presence of his chased dream.
“Aren’t you exhausted from chasing after the same person? You’re not even sure they would welcome you in their life. Make sure to face the darkest possibilities in this journey, young man,” a stranger explained one night, holding his drink. Based on the expression on his face, he seemed to be nostalgic about the past, something Izuku could understand when you already lived half of your life.
The sound of the raucous crowd resonated into their ears, feeling how some curious souls were whispering about his presence here. To be fair, Izuku didn’t know where he was going; his only hint was the whispers behind his back, helping him against their will. No matter the reward at the end of his long and arduous journey, the prize would be worth fighting for.
“I’m aware of how crazy my situation is, but a part of me is begging to find this person, even if the world is against me. I’ve been looking for their shadows countless times in my dreams, wondering if they would live up to my expectations. Strange as it may be, I have the impression that our paths crossed already without even knowing it... It is such a strong feeling that it is the only reason for my presence in these lands. Maybe I will be disappointed but at least I will have tried and made my proof in this fight that I have led since I was four years old.”
The determination in his eyes made the stranger sigh, pushing his cup of beer away and putting a hand on Izuku’s shoulder. Rare was the number of people willing to listen to his story and help him on this journey…which must be why, despite their short interaction, the freckled man felt listened to. The stranger’s mouth opened, ready to say one last thing but he closed it in the next second, almost like he shouldn’t reveal this part of the story. Instead, he faced the surprised emerald eyes and smiled.
“Make sure to not lose yourself,” he whispered with a matter-of-fact tone. After all, the entire country knew about the meaning of this dragon symbol, especially with the tragic backstory related to this poor soul. “Let hope guide you to the answers you’ve been looking for, but make sure to accept the tears when the time has come. Good luck with the next chapter of your story, young man.”
That night, the freckled man couldn’t sleep in the room he had rented for the night, his thoughts could only repeat the words of his previous interaction. Like the others, this man seemed to know much more of this story than Izuku did but had put his judgments aside for a few minutes. The wind swept against the grey curtains, against the curtains, greyed with age to match the stone walls. The night was still at its brightest, reflecting the ethereal beauty of the moon and a sky full of mesmerizing stars. Izuku wondered if they'd share his story one of these days, no matter the ending awaiting him. Until now, he couldn't help but be proud of himself, despite the memories of this harvest day.
He ignored the blush on his cheeks, feeling, for some reason, that this stranger he met was connected to him. It wouldn't make any sense but he still pictured these beautiful, hoping this man was doing alright. It has been years and his heart still hesitated between this stranger who made him feel loved with a few minutes of conversation or the soulmate he had been chasing since his birth. Izuku sighed, moving beneath the sheet, and closed his eyes, changing his mind.
After all, tomorrow would be another day full of surprises.
—-
Izuku didn’t remember when he started to feel this sudden rise of excitement in his chest, probably when he realized someone was completing his soul…but he started to miss his old self. He didn’t know how many times he had seen his reflection in the lake, as the hope started to fade away. If his shining, jade eyes had been brighter than the stars in a midnight sky, they would have lost their shade of hope as the days went by without answers.
At this rate, someone or something had to be against his quest, but Izuku fought until the end to solve this mystery.
He stopped counting the number of times someone refused to let him stay, explaining how he’d bring them the same curse, leading to even more questions in his mind. There was something darker behind these simple lines that decorated his wrist, and the closer he got to his goal, the more scared he grew. It felt strange to know how he had sacrificed so many months of his life looking for someone when it could all stop overnight.
His friends had probably given up searching for him in his village already, and it was too late to return, but it was too late to return. Don’t get him wrong, he still had a slight hint of hope, but that night he changed his mind. He could feel his heart hurting at the idea of losing the trace of his soulmate, maybe because in his quest, he had strayed from his goal.
One night, he decided to visit this open tavern, in lands that hat resembled his homeland.
At this rate, he was familiar with the landscape he had previously admired. He remembered pushing the main door with his scarred hands, feeling the sudden wave of heat reaching his face and erasing the cold from his body. At first sight, this place looked alive despite such a late hour, with the loud sound of the drunk patrons shouting thoughts their sober tongues would have kept silent. Fights would begin, forcing the servers to step in before it could turn into a riot. Izuku didn't know anything about this tavern; he was just looking for a place to sleep and hoped these strangers would have something to offer in his misery.
In his field of vision, Izuku’s eyes narrowed in on the many bottles of liquor, and the smell of alcohol surrounded him, while he wondered if it was worth it... After all, he was not the type to give up so easily but he had exhausted his last clues. His only hope was to face a person who was not afraid of the rumors around his name, at this rate, even the slightest hint could give him motivation.
“That’s quite the mark you have on your wrist, isn’t it? I bet a lot of people point out how beautiful it is,” a feminine voice teased, catching his attention.
At first sight, this woman seemed to be in her thirties. She wore a simple dress a simple dress made of brown cotton, the same shade as her dark eyes. Her hair fell just past her shoulder blade to disguise scars on her shoulder like she was trying to hide them. If the question had stirred Izuku’s mind, he didn't dare to show it, knowing that he simply wished to find peace.
“Thanks, actually you’re the only one praising it…I used to admire these colors and question this symbol, but I’m afraid this fight is useless.”
A slight smile appeared on his face, realizing how it was the only compliment he heard about this soulmate mark that everyone else seemed to fear. It had been a moment since he last looked at the dragon symbol, and he only now realized how the color started to fade. He had never planned to confess to a stranger, but at this point, everyone knew his name and his face.
“Let me confess something, I heard your name from more than one mouth and you know how to make a good impression around here. I don’t know the entire story, but I know there’s still hope, being unavailable to give..” the woman explained, preparing someone’s order and noticing the heavy bags under his eyes.
Izuku sighed. He couldn’t help but smile at the support, knowing how his younger self would have sincerely believed in her words. For the moment, he was focused on his need to find a roof before the cold could take him first…
"I bet you say this to a lot of patrons, but you don't need to pity me. After all, I'm just looking for a place to rest tonight…It’s just a matter of a night before my ghost leaves town.” His voice sounded desperate and tired, but he had nothing else to do. It was the first time since the beginning of his journey that giving up sounded like a good option.
“Today is your lucky day because we have rooms to rent for one or more nights. Despite appearances, this city is as empty as the ghostly lands a few kilometers away. It has become very quiet since the royal couple became discreet and our services have become rare...except for the drunks who make it possible for us to pay our monthly fees.”
The drunken man started to groan in answer, revealing how right she was, Izuku decided to ignore it. Instead, he focused on the blurry memory of a similar story he heard in the past but he couldn’t recall the specifics…almost like he forgot for a reason. With a sigh, he chased these thoughts from his mind and stared at the woman, waiting for an actual answer with an amused gaze.
“Times are hard when you’re looking for a ghost,” he pointed out, as he put his last coin on the wooden counter before sipping his drink. “But I’m grateful for your support and for letting me stay. I still have to find my unsolved truths and I don’t know where this person could be.”
He always wondered what marks his soulmate had on his wrist…It would be a question to ask during their meeting if fate ever favored them. For the moment, it would remain a mystery of the perfect life he was building in his mind. The woman’s face softened, and a small smile lifted her cheeks. With a hesitant gaze, she looked around before slipping him a piece of paper with her handwriting. At first, he seemed to recognize the address but he needed to hear the words of the waitress to confirm his doubts.
“I know I shouldn’t do this but it’s unfair for you to not know the entire story. Trust me, you’re a sweet soul and I’m sure he would’ve loved to see this devotion…but go to this exact address, and you’ll find your truths. Good luck, young man.”
At that moment, millions of questions came to mind, but none dared to leave his lips. His emerald iris suddenly shone at the realization that this woman had no obligation to help him…but she still did. After all, she could’ve left him alone with his worries but she decided to give him the keys to his final answers. His fingers ruffled the paper, his eyes memorizing the writing and making sure he would remember the address even if something happened to this precious paper.
Izuku was about to thank her, but before realizing it, she left his sight, already on the opposite side of the room, talking with a customer and serving them. He wished he could ask more questions, but his scarred hands grabbed the keys to his room beside the paper, before putting his precious treasure in his pocket.
That night, the freckled man had a feeling of deja vu, and staying awake at such a late hour wouldn’t help his case. Night had already fallen hours ago, leaving his insomnia alone against the world. Thoughts and multiple questions plagued his mind, keeping him awake, as he wondered if tomorrow he would leave with tears of sadness or joy. In less than 24 hours, his whole adventure would come to an end with an address that would change the course of his life.
The precious words written on this paper would determine his fate. He couldn’t help but smile at the excitement of finally meeting his soulmate. Would he be nice? Sweet? Funny? Maybe this person would reject Izuku because he wouldn’t be his kind of man…so many unsolved questions crossing his mind. For the first time since the beginning of his journey, he felt like this four-year-old child discovering the entire mysteries around the soulmate symbol.
He gave one last glance to the crimson dragon on his wrist, tracing the thin lines dimmed with age, and hoping tomorrow's fate would be in his favor.

In the early morning, the stars gave way to the blinding rays of the sun, striking the curtains of the empty room. The previous night was short-lived for this soul still in need of adventure in this last quest, so he grabbed his bag and only glanced briefly at his reflection in the mirror. He had overcome a lot of obstacles to stand here today…This time he felt ready to welcome someone else to the story of his life.
The sunrise marked the beginning of a new day in this city abandoned by the ghosts of the past. Few shadows remained in the early morning light, yet these shadows concealed the beginning of the end for Izuku, the beginning of the end for Izuku, who unknowingly headed for his loss. In order not to wake the others, the young man had left the keys on the counter with a note, thanking the woman for her help. His shadow disappeared as fast as she had appeared before with a small smile and a hint of hope living in her chest.
“I’ve heard a lot about him, but I never thought he would reach our lands,” the older man said with a sigh, putting his back against the wall and crossing his arms. “The rump was right, he’s pretty determined to chase after our prince. I’m pretty sure these two would’ve been a good match if the tragedy never happened.”
The woman didn’t answer. It broke her heart to see how innocent Izuku was, ignoring the darker side of this land which used to be full of tears. The tragedy changed the entire country, forcing the royal family to cut off any contact they had with the world….almost like they never existed.
"I remember years ago when the prince used to stand right here...imagine if fate and time hadn't been so unfair to their souls,” she whispered, realizing how the notalgia was talking for her. She could still remember the day when Katsuki Bakugou appeared in their tavern, explaining how he was searching for his soulmate.
In another life, maybe their lives would’ve been happier…
—
This time, people took the time to respond with the appropriate direction, leading to a more isolated location.
Some had even warned Izuku of some dangerous trails, recommending others which would be safer despite the detour. For the first time since the beginning of his adventure, the freckled man felt mutual help, not disgust or contempt for his case.
The sound of his footsteps filled his ears, mingling with the gush of the wind rustling the leaves of the trees. The sun came to warm his shoulders, drops of sweat glistening on his skin and his messy, green curls shining viridescent. In the morning light, the shade of green revealed something softer, and more authentic as he gradually reached the forbidden paths of this kingdom lost in time. For a moment, it was as if he had traveled into the past, uncovering the beauty of these places that had been the scene of a tragedy still unknown to him.
In his innocence, Izuku looked around him as the endless landscape unfolded before his eyes, as if distance gave him some kind of power. However, the only thing that concerned him was the sound of his heartbeat which drowned out all the sounds of the surroundings. Everything could be played in the space of a moment, a bad word or gesture could screw up his entire plan…
With a quick look at his wrist, Izuku smiled.
After all, he was doing all of this for his soulmate and he hoped his devotion would be mutual. Maybe his body would be a stranger, but a part of him hoped their souls would recognize each other. All this time, he learned to read between the lines of his heart, being comforted by the dragon mark on his skin, a constant reminder of his quest. He had spent so much time wondering about this moment and if they would recognize each other beyond the number of people living in this world.
“You better wait for me, because I did…my whole life,” confessed Izuku in a soft tone.
The hours went and the sound of his steps dangerously approached his final destination, while the wind came to take away his words. It seemed pretty crazy to see someone frown on this trail, abandoned for years. As stupid as it may seem, the young man wanted to train to make presentations, even if it included the possibility of failure in his course.
It felt great to reach his goal, knowing he was getting closer even if the landscape turned into something sadder. There were no more of the colors he had grown used to in the city, but his eyes searched the grey landscape, as the wind stroked his face. What a strange location for a house, but he could get used to it!
“- no, that sounds too direct; they’ll think I’m crazy,” he whispered, putting his hands to his chin and taking a break. “Hi, my name is Izuku Midoriya and I’m your soulmate! Crazy, right? I’ve been looking for you for decades- I can’t scare them like that.”
The sudden hope in his chest awoke into something brighter, echoing the genuine smile that always formed on his lips whenever someone mentioned his soulmate. After all, if their fate and souls have been connected between the millions of people residing in these lands, there must be a reason. Maybe this person would understand and accept his presence in their life, or maybe they would reject Izuku. There were so many scenarios playing out in his head, leading him to temporarily close his eyes and dream about what his future might be with someone loving him.
—-
The fresh wind ruffled the freckled man’s curls, as he faced the sight before his eyes.
His heart beat faster when he looked up at the building and tried to imagine someone residing in these walls. Much to his surprise, a castle stood in front of him with the grey stone worn by time and unkempt vegetation growing around this lost area of the land.
It was obvious that this place had been uninhabited for years. Cracked stones indicated the path to a garden that used to be filled with flowers of the most beautiful color, the symbol of rebirth for the kingdom. The flowers had now faded, echoing the sadness of this place, with the murmurs of the wind near his ear. Although Izuku felt his hope fly away little by little, he clung to this last suspicion that made his heart beat and led him to his final goal.
In any other context, Izuku would have marveled at the view and opportunities in this new life… but he didn't know that this place would also mark the end of his childhood dreams that he had chased all his life. His footsteps resounded in the empty place, devoid of life, while he tried to warm up his hands as best as he could.
He felt lost around this more condemning and solitary vision of these lands, and he felt his body come to a stop. After observing the entire area with many questions on his lips, with the hope of finding any sign of life, the freckled man decided to reach the old stone walls, only to find two figures. Much to his surprise, he noticed how they were the only ones keeping this area of the castle safe for some unknown reason…
With hesitation and a huge breath, he decided to walk closer, noticing that the two men were sleeping against the wall. He couldn’t blame them; after all, rarely did someone enter this side of the kingdom, but Izuku was born to make history.
“Um…Excuse me,” announced the freckled man, hoping to avoid a misunderstanding. The sound of his voice woke the two men from their nap, causing them to let their weapons fall on the ground. They wiped at their sleepy eyes before sharing a confused gaze, wondering who this man standing before them could be.
“What are you doing here, stranger? This property is condemned, except under the sole authorization of the royal couple,” the man shouted, breaking the silence and making Izuku step back. These guards seemed to be on the defensive for this dilapidated piece of property, piquing Izuku’s curiosity.
“I apologize for showing up here at such a late hour, but I was looking for someone residing on this side of the garden. I’ve traveled far and for many years to reach this person, though I understand that my presence here could lead to some questions.” It wasn’t how he expected this encounter to play out, but the freckled man reassured himself by hoping the prize behind this final obstacle was worth the price.
“You indeed are suspicious because everyone in these lands knows that it’s forbidden to reach this side of the castle. What makes you think you’ll be different from the others?” the other guard asked, crossing his arms against his chest and smirking at Izuku. It wasn’t the first time someone had come to see the prince’s grave, and their job was to protect this specific side from any attacks.
“You know, a lot of people used to seek his attention, but I’m not sure he’s available now.” There was something cold in the guard’s tone, almost like he was distant from the freckled man’s effort to keep this conversation. “You better turn back and go home, kid. Trust me, the only thing you’ll find behind this wall is a ghost of the past.”
Izuku couldn’t give up. He already made so much progress in this journey…He couldn’t give up as nothing happened and let all his efforts be in vain. However, if everyone, including the guards, kept hinting at the past and the ghosts haunting this place, it might be for a reason. At that moment, the freckled man realized talking with them would be useless so he decided to use his last card even if it was risky.
“Please, my request will only take a few minutes. I understand this person must be occupied but I came here because I need to have answers to my questions…and only he can solve the mystery around this mark.”
Izuku moved closer, pulling up his sleeve to expose his soulmate mark. The dragon was etched in a shade of red that reminded Izuku of the mysterious eyes of a man he met years ago. There was no way these could be linked, but if the guards refused his argument, it’d be officially over…The freckled man raised his head, finding matching stunned expressions on both their faces. They’d grown pale and their eyes reflected the surprise crossing their mind, forcing Izuku to automatically take another step back, ignoring the sound of his heartbeat echoing louder than his breath.
“My name is Izuku Midoriya, and I’m looking for my soulmate,” he shouted into the previous silence, noticing how the three of them all trembled.
The two guards lay eyes on each other, talking in a language that Izuku could not understand. At this point, the freckled man was just tired of pretending to be fine because he needed to know the reason for their surprise, even if it was heartbreaking.
No…there was no way.
A crazy person would never make this journey to see their prince, especially after the tragedy. Everyone knew how Katsuki Bakugo died years ago, sacrificing himself on his soulmate quest. His death had impacted the entire country, including his closest friends and parents. The guards had seen with their own eyes the light fading away in the royal couple’s eyes…because Mitsuki and Masaru never moved on after their son’s death, locking themselves away in their castle and becoming the ghosts of the promise they never kept. Today their name would only be old memories for the souls who had gathered these lands, while sickness and madness have just sneered at them. The regrets had transformed into a monster drowning everything in its path, causing even the strongest soldiers to succumb.
Still, an old memory that they buried long ago had decided to resurface.
—-
Years ago, before the ashes began to burn…
“What do you mean we can’t know who’s my son’s soulmate?” Mitsuki shouted, revealing a hateful expression on her face.
It was clear the entire castle knew about how their beloved prince had his soulmate mark, mostly because he was excited to know who could be on the other end. To comfort her son, Mitsuki decided to find the one who seemed to make Katsuki smile with bright stars in his eyes and comfort him at night. Much to her surprise, she didn’t expect to see an ear of wheat appear on the wrist of his son, with such fine features that one was afraid to cut him. However, the specificity of this symbol was this shade of green, similar to the jade jewels that could be found in their treasury. It was something mesmerizing, especially when this could give a lot of hints about the person behind this symbol.
“It seems obvious to me that his soulmate is potentially a farmer hidden somewhere else in this land. What do you want us to do? To check all the farmers’ wrists to find the one? We must be realistic and trust your service, it is not to leave us unanswered.”
That day, the blond was resting on his mother’s lap, listening to the entire situation. For this research, the royal couple made sure to ask the most competent sorcerer, one who had saved more lives than anyone else. To call upon his services could only mean the most dire and complicated situation, forcing them to keep the secret about their meeting. After all, Aizawa was known for being able to predict the future at different degrees, depending on the situation…He couldn’t refuse such an offer coming from the queen herself, but for the first time in years, he couldn’t solve her case.
“My most sincere apologies, Your Majesty, but I fear to be in incapacity to answer your request. This search for truth holds so much your son will take shape when the time comes…Indeed, In a few years, fate will lead him to choose between his heart and reason.”
Aizawa had always been a man of his word, especially in his job. In his entire life, he had met more royalty than the kings and queens themselves. He learned how to read into their mind and avoid their traps, but some things are better left hidden. Perhaps he could still bring some hope to Katsuki’s heart, reassuring him about his future, without mentioning the curse on his vulnerable soul.
"All this is just wind to give us promises in the air. How can we know the truth? Can you swear on your reputation, the one you care so much about keeping?" As naive as it sounded, swearing on his reputation in this world implied confiding a part of his soul to this person. Many people would lie straight to the royalty’s faces and face death the next day due to their betrayal, Aizawa refused to be one of them and stayed true to his values.
"Alas, I cannot reveal much about the future of your son and his soulmate, even though I want to.”
“There must be something we can do,” protested the blonde woman, observing how her son’s eyes grew sadder. She knew that Katsuki was a brat, but she loved him more than anyone. His happiness would always be her priority and she didn’t want to face the tears in his eyes.
“I’m afraid we can’t know the identity of this mysterious soul linked to our dear prince, but I had a vision,” Aizawa explained with a sigh, feeling the weight of all the eyes on him. “I know that in the most unexpected circumstances, their paths will cross. From that moment, the short of the story will write itself and none will be able to change it.”
The tone in his voice revealed that the older man was serious in his speech, lightening the worries in Mitsuki’s chest and making the crimson eyes of the prince widen. He couldn’t break the soft expression on their gazes, especially when the small prince was holding his mother closer, revealing a bright shade of red on his chubby cheeks.
“So…does this mean I’ll meet them one day?” his low voice asked with curiosity, facing the nod of Aizawa, the only source of trust the royal couple could have.
His mouth opened, but the millions of questions racing in his mind refused to leave, letting his small crimson eyes shine in this huge room. After a few minutes passed the small boy left the room to reach a hidden area of this castle he knew by heart, shouting how he’d have the best soulmate this world had ever known. Mitsuki and Masaru shared a glance, their previous worries erased and thanked Aizawa for his services even if the expression on his face remained serious.
With his experience, he had seen many people suffering and pain blooming their chests, he didn’t need to imagine how the soft smiles on their faces would be their last memories of happiness…
——
This castle had seen many horrors in recent years and heard the curses leaving the owners of this place but none could compare to the cold atmosphere in these walls after the tragedy.
The royal couple let themselves die every day, remembering the last time the prince’s voice echoed in these walls full of blood and sweat. Katsuki Bakugou had never given up the idea of reaching his ultimate goal: meeting the extra that fate had deemed to be his soulmate.
The entire castle has heard about the prince’s soulmate since Aizawa’s visit, but they never had the chance to give a face and a name to this stranger who was so dear to the blond’s eyes. As the years went by, the few questions surrounding this mysterious person became a recurrent thing, almost like everyone had the impression to act like Izuku had always been a member of this place. Sometimes ghost whispers would cross their ears, reminding them of this endless devotion their beloved prince had since a young age.
“So…you’re Katsuki Bakugou’s soulmate?” the man asked with a low tone, holding his weapon tighter. A blur of memory began to invade their minds, facing the ghosts of the past and the illusion that the savior had arrived too late.
Izuku was afraid he reached an impasse with these strangers but his worries were erased by the mention of his soulmate’s name. He couldn’t help but feel a hint of pride at the complete realization that he was finally getting closer to his goal…If it started with a name, it would end up with the two men rushing into each other’s arms. His mind fixated on this beautiful name that sounded right on his lips, projecting into the daydream he entertained for years.
“I know he’s occupied but I won’t take much of his time. I’ve been looking for him my entire life. I can’t pretend he’s not a part of my soul…” His jade eyes took a quick peek at the symbol on his skin, letting his fingers trace the mark. This time, the freckled man decided to show his vulnerability, despite knowing how it could be in his disfavor. Maybe the guard would judge him for chasing after him, but Katsuki was worth fighting if this meant finding his missing piece.
“You wouldn’t bother him at all…on the contrary, I think he would’ve loved to see your presence on a darker day like this one,” the second guard sighed, a sad expression on his face. With a sympathetic gaze, the two men decided to open the door for the first time in years.
They had never thought a day would come when they would be able to see the crown prince’s soulmate with their own eyes. Over the years, this became a legend and a promise to hold onto, keeping Katsuki’s memory alive. The saddest part of this journey was how the blond couldn’t stand with them today to share this excitement, especially after someone he had been on his lips since his childhood. In another life, maybe this Izuku Midoriya and their Katsuki Bakugou would’ve known a better ending….
The freckled man thanked them a million times over, deciding to follow their orders. His heart beat louder in his ears, his body was shaking at the apprehension of this moment he waited for his entire life. At the end of this path would be standing Katsuki Bakugou, the man Izuku adored since his childhood.
A smile appeared on his face, wondering if they’d immediately know who the other was, or if they’d be shy. Maybe Izuku would jump into his arms and admire how he would be forever marked on the other’s skin, realizing his happiness. After all, he went through so much to face the only person occupying his mind since he was four. The freckled man wished he could already see his face, knowing it would probably be something breathtaking with a name like his.
The freckled man took a deep breath and held it as he walked into the last section of this garden, preparing himself for the revelation. Faded flowers indicated the mark of time on this place. The sound of the wind rushing past his ears sounded like a warning to go back but Izuku decided to ignore it.
Munch to his surprise, this place had a particular atmosphere, as if time had frozen and memories refused to fade as the vegetation surrounding him had. This feeling of warmth was only temporary before it abruptly changed as his hands rested against his arms, trying to ignore the cold opposing his path. An old carved stone well stood in the center of the room with dates going back decades, just like the wooden bench with its degraded material. Nature had reclaimed this space that had the ancient reputation of being welcoming, but which now left Izuku feeling strange...as if he should not enter this forbidden land.
Maybe the guards were lying and tricked him into the wrong place….
Pushing aside these uncomfortable thoughts, he scanned the area, facing the answers to his questions. The sound of his heartbeat pounded louder in his ears, and his breathing grew shaky and irregular as a wave of panic prevailed. His scarred hands trembled, Izuku struggling to understand what was happening…None of his scenarios had Izuku facing a stone tomb, worn by time. The writing seemed to belong to a member of the royal family himself, while the name of Katsuki Bakugou stood as a scar of an indeterminate fight. In his denial, the freckled man ignored what his eyes told him, thinking it must be a bad joke because this made no sense!
His entire soul knew he belonged here, so why did it hurt to see this old grave bearing a name he had chased after his entire life?
Izuku tried to understand the situation by himself, desperate to believe he had misunderstood the situation. There was no way the dream he had chased would fade away, almost like nothing happened. His fingers traced the writing on the old grave, afraid to break it or even worse, bother the deceased soul haunting this place.
His eyes widened when he recognized the gap between the prince’s birth and his death date, recalling an event that had occupied his mind all this time and had changed the course of their lives.
——
During a fateful summer,
It was still too early to tell whether the last harvest would be sufficient to survive for the next few months, especially with the unfortunate conditions lately.
However, it didn't stop Izuku and his mother from giving the best of themselves knowing how each summer would be different from the last. For the occasion, the young man had decided to make the journey on his own, judging himself mature enough to give rest to his tired mother. He was finally a man ready to explore this side of the world for the first time, unaware yet how his life would take an unexpected turn…
That day, the sun shone bright, almost blinding in the public square, bustling with heavy and constant noise. This year each stand had to be more striking than the previous ones, attracting the most curious eyes and reproducing the success of seasons that had done them honor in the past. Izuku had employed every bit of his creativity to highlight his best products, but despite his effort, no curious soul showed interest in his wares.
The minutes turned into hours, and Izuku wondered if it was worth it. After all, his family was not so different from the others and their involvement in this task was equal...so why did no one want to give him even a single penny when the produce of his neighbors were similar? Izuku didn’t want to return home feeling ashamed and not having sold enough to justify the journey. Was there something he was doing wrong?
"You don’t promote seasonal products enough," a sudden voice caught his attention, forcing him to wipe the hidden tears on his cheeks.
A small light of hope began to burn in his chest, as he schooled his breathing and turned to face the first customer who pitied his case. In his curiosity, the young man decided to face the man standing in front of his stand. The stranger’s voice was impossible to ignore despite the tone of his preceding words.
The first thing Izuku noticed was their size difference and a brown cloak draped over his shoulders. He wasn’t the kind of person Izuku met every day, but something in his chest urged him to dig a little deeper into this stranger’s identity.
“You put forward products from last season, leaving aside your olives, beans, and Mirabelle,” the man explained with a matter-of-fact tone, letting his callous hands glide over the produce. “If you rearrange your display to highlight the seasonal wares, you’ll attract more customers.”
Izuku didn’t answer immediately. This outsider seemed to have more knowledge about this than the farmer himself. It took him by surprise when he realized how his beans could hardly be seen behind the beets before he raised his head and met the man’s eyes. For some reason, the blond wished to keep his anonymity, but something awoke in the freckled man’s chest, an odd feeling he couldn’t name.
“Well, in my misfortune I had the chance to attract your curiosity if you’re still here. To be fair, it’s my first time in this aspect of our seasonal harvest. I still have a lot of things to learn, but I’ll think about it next time,” answered the freckled man with an absent expression on his face. “Thank you for your help!”
Izuku rolled his eyes, realizing how unlikely it was that someone else would approach his stand again today. The setting sun cast its orange and crimson rays across their faces, highlighting Izuku’s teary eyes. He didn’t know if this man would stay to buy his products or even to have a small talk with a desperate soul like him, but in his misery, he held onto the second possibility.
“You don’t need to thank me for something so basic,” he protested, almost annoyed by the other’s naivety. “It’s kinda shitty if all the extras knew this but left you in misery. I’m not a savior either, just someone who could recognize a desperate soul in this mess.”
It wasn’t the first time Katsuki was leaving his castle for the harvest season, deciding to escape from his annoying hag who made sure to play on his nerves about political issues. Despite growing up in this environment, the blond knew it wasn’t where he belonged, because his heart knew he would only find the answer by his soulmate’s side. At this hour, his parents and annoying friends had probably searched for him across the town, reminding him of his constant duties. If only the blond could escape from this hell, even temporarily; he’d do just about anything.
“You’re probably right,” admitted Izuku with a sad smile.
He had never been the kind of guy to easily lie to people, even if his honesty caused an uncomfortable situation. Maybe this stranger could judge him for being vulnerable, but at least this man had the decency to offer his help in a desperate situation like this one.
The tremble in his voice caught the prince’s attention, forcing him to take a peek at the other for the first time since they started their conversation. In a quick gesture that seemed to last for minutes, Katsuki’s face turned pale at the sight of the prettiest man he had ever seen in his life. The smaller figure stood beside him with mesmerizing emerald eyes similar to the jewels he had in his castle and the messiest curls in a similar shade of green framing his face. His cheeks were covered by freckles, leading the blond man to lose himself in this unforgettable sight before him.
Katsuki Bakugou wasn’t a traitor. He would still devote his entire soul to his soulmate when their paths finally met…but this freckled man made him feel things he had never felt before. It was like something slotted perfectly into the empty spaces in his soul the moment their eyes met, even if they didn’t know anything about each other. Izuku had a similar reaction, feeling his heart skip a beat at the crimson-red eyes locking onto his own jade eyes. Something changed in the atmosphere, almost like they were the only people in this whole town, too mesmerized by the other’s presence to take note of another living soul.
“Tell me…Haven’t we met before ?” The question left Izuku’s mouth unconsciously, making him blush at the sudden embarrassment. How stupid he was to make this atmosphere uncomfortable again, but both men had the impression of knowing the other for decades.
“I would remember a pretty face like yours, freckles,” Katsuki answered with a smirk, trying to chase his thoughts about the blushing man standing beside him.
Izuku tried to ignore the shade of red growing more and more obvious on his cheeks, choosing instead to focus on this exhilarating sensation spreading throughout his body. His heart was an absolute mess, almost like he wanted to hold onto this beautiful man for the rest of his days, but he was also devoted to his soulmate. He couldn’t allow himself to fall in love with someone else, even if it was hard to ignore the crimson eyes observing each of his movements.
“Are you using your natural charm to flirt with the most vulnerable soul you met on your path?” teased the freckled man in response, hoping to calm the atmosphere and the sound of his racing heartbeat. In their euphoria, they acted like they were the only people in the world, overlooking the whispers from the surrounding crowd. Don’t get him wrong, he had no intention of playing the other’s game, but it felt natural...
“I wouldn’t waste my precious breath to spread lies,” objected the blond with a smirk.
As odd as it seemed, the two of them felt like they’d been friends for years when they didn’t even know each other’s names. The flow of this conversation was only guided by the sound of their hearts beating faster and their souls calling out to one another, almost like they found someone to heal all their insecurities. It would be crazy to jump to a conclusion, even if the two men couldn’t explain this sudden chemistry between them.
“Are you going to stay here until the moon and stars welcome your misery? Because I’m afraid to tell you, but no one except me would spend their time talking with a desperate soul like yours.”
“I find you a little too hard for someone who is in the same situation as me, to my knowledge you’re still wasting your time with me when you could’ve returned home. I should probably ask you if you’re interested in something, but your eyes are telling me how you’re not here for the seasonal products, are you?” Izuku replied, a smile teasing the corner of his mouth. Indeed, he had never been talented at flirting with people, but the words escaped his lips without a second thought.
A sudden silence loomed between the two men, forcing them to step back and realize how close they had been. There was something strange and mesmerizing about these red eyes, almost like they were begging the freckled man to listen to their stories and unspoken truths. In his misfortune, he had some company even if this man was slightly annoying.
“Let’s just say I found another reason to stay a little longer…Plus, I can’t return home now.” Katsuki’s voice broke this uncomfortable atmosphere, almost like the previous comments that struck a chord.
If the freckled man noticed the absent gaze on his face, he decided to turn it into something comical despite his weak improvisation skills. “Why? Are you afraid your mommy and daddy would yell at you for breaking their rules?”
“Shut up,” the blond spat back, his face scrunching with an annoyed expression, as he rolled his eyes. A part of him was glad this idiot changed the atmosphere of the conversation, as the wind ruffled his green curls. “But I’ll make sure you’ll remember me in a good way, that’s why I’m buying your entire inventory.”
The freckled man nearly choked at the news. He had probably misunderstood and this was just his desperation turning against him. There was no reason for a man like him to pay for products like Izuku’s, whether it was pity or not. However, a simple glance was enough for both men to understand that the blond was more than serious, despite his smile. If Izuku wasn’t so determined to follow his heart to his soulmate, he would gladly chase after the mysteries this golden-haired man was hiding.
“You’re crazy,” Izuku declared with a sigh. “Unfortunately for you, this is not my kind of joke so if you want my heart, you need to use something else.”
Katsuki smirked at the comment, ignoring how a slight blush appeared on his cheeks. He wasn’t a teenager anymore so why was he acting like one finding his first love? However, those emerald eyes were captivating, making the prince wonder what else hid behind this precious smile able to melt his heart at first sight.
“I’m not here to be considered a hero, especially when I’ll never be one but for your sake, you can consider this as a gesture between two annoying people, helping each other in their quest…don’t you think ?” The tone in his voice indicated how his words had a double meaning, but it remained something Izuku couldn’t understand.
“I don’t see how I’m helping you, especially because we only met a few minutes ago,” laughed the smaller man, thinking the entire thing was nothing but a cruel joke. “You can give me your imaginary money, I won’t say anything to the event owners.
Something changed in the prince’s gaze, almost like he was hurt by the comment. To prove how serious he was, he took his bag full of coins and dropped it on the stand with a heavy thud. The sudden sound caught the attention of every bystander and left a stunned look on Izuku’s pale face. This time, the joke was going too far and this man was playing with his emotions.
“Take that bag away from my stand and leave if you plan to play with people’s misery,” assured the freckled man, giving him a broken look. It had never been in Katsuki’s plan to hurt the other, but he needed to solve this situation before it led to another misunderstanding.
“I wouldn’t joke with my money. I know what I am doing. Just consider it a way to remember our meeting. Maybe our paths will split, but I don’t want you to remember me as a bastard who prods at other people’s weaknesses.”
This time the shake in his voice conveyed his sincerity despite his previous comments. Perhaps the freckled man had been too hard on him, especially because the blond had no reason Izuku could imagine to be joking about this.
Still, Katsuki seemed determined to give this to him, and maybe accepting it wouldn’t be a bad thing if it meant remembering their encounter. Izuku sighed, his eyes meeting crimson ones once more and reading how sincere they were. As strange as it seemed, the two men didn’t need to talk to communicate, almost like they could read into the other like an open book. This would probably be a temporary impression in their hearts, but at least it would be enough to comfort them in this unexpected meeting.
“Not that I care but would the extras mind if I steal your attention a little more? I can’t let you return home alone with all this weight on your shoulders. Let me help you and escape a little when no one is looking. I already paid for the produce and I would like to know more about you, freckles."
At the dawn of a new era, something inexplicable happened. None of them knew how much time had passed since the beginning of their conversation, but their ears caught their curious eyes, hearing some whispers surrounding their shadows. All this had been swept away by this ounce of desire when their eyes met again to the unexpected proposal. Izuku was able to return home on his own, but his instinct screamed at him not to let go of this stranger who had demanded his attention so much. Unfair as it seemed to be for his soulmate, the freckled man had decided to focus on the blond in front of him with his imposing aura.
“You seem to take a lot of initiative for someone not interested…but it’s getting late and I wouldn’t mind some company on this lonely path.”
—--
Returning home in these familiar woods, followed by someone else, had never been in his plan.
The freckled man’s life had been rather solitary since his childhood, though his few friends made him realize that sharing his thoughts with someone could be fun. It could take weight off his shoulders when the people he trusted the most would listen to him. In this usually silent wood, their footsteps and voices provided a comforting backdrop to the walk home. The wind carried their discussion to an unknown land, while the trail tempted them with a multitude of paths to travel.
“It’s impressive,” confessed Katsuki, glancing at the freckled man by his side. “I’ve never been there before, especially on this side of the forest.”
He didn’t know how many hours they walked in this landscape, but it wouldn’t matter given how Izuku captured his entire attention. The blond could memorize every centimeter of his face, the way his smile lifted his round cheeks when it was genuine, revealing the hidden freckles near his ears. This man was a mystery to solve and a new quest for Katsuki, no matter the prize or consequences he faced. Maybe he could go against this soulmate thing and focus on this pretty man beside him, mumbling about his passions with shining eyes.
“It’s hidden for a reason,” the freckled man answered with a smile, patting the donkey that walked beside them. “The stories about this place may vary depending on the people, but I tend to think that this tiny village was born for those who wish to live away from the big cities. It was written in our fate from the beginning, and nothing is left to chance, even if I have a naive vision of the thing.”
“Your naivety will lead you to your own grave one of these days. Not everyone is as pure as your soul, so make sure to protect yourself before it’s too late…you think your life is alright and the next day, everything falls apart.”
Katsuki sighed, taking a peek at the night that had fallen around them, knowing how he’d face the consequences of his actions. Izuku’s face softened, observing how the face of this golden-haired man was as captivating as his arminess in his speeches. In another context, he would be afraid to give his complete trust to a stranger, but it was different with this man…almost like he could confide his entire soul and nothing would bother him.
“Sometimes life is unfair with the bravest souls, but we all end up coming out stronger. It won’t always be an easy journey, but I do think that each choice is meaningful in the path of your life. After all, the people you met yesterday could be the reason for your downfall or your revival, and some of them would leave overnight. We can’t go against something as strong as fate, but we can enjoy each second as if it were our last.”
The freckled man stopped in the middle of the path, meeting the surprised expression on the blond’s face. From this angle, Katsuki looked prettier than ever with his golden spiky hair, crimson red eyes, and the beauty of his face. The moment felt as though it had escaped from his dreams, somewhere Izuku felt safe enough to rest a little longer, hoping he’d never wake up.
The sound of his heartbeat grew louder in his ears, erasing all the background noises of the forest around them. It was probably the first time someone had ever made him feel that way. This sensation spreading through his entire body went beyond words, leading the blushing man to stay focused on the man before him. This golden-haired man was the only thing that captivated his mind, making his heart race faster and giving him the impression of being loved.
It wasn’t just any kind of love either; it was something more powerful than anything he had experienced before. His mother used to explain how the heart would choose the right person when the time had come, and maybe she was right. His previous heartbreak would fade away in the face of the teasing smirk forming on the other’s lips. It was almost like he could read in his mind.
“Why are you looking at me that way?” his voice echoed in Izuku’s ears, demanding his attention.
It took him by surprise when he felt the cold air whipping his curls back from his forehead and bringing him back to reality. If he couldn’t explain the previous warmth in his chest, he would still feel bad about his situation…
“Nothing,” the freckled man answered with a smile, as the taller figure joined him.
As he recognized the trees around them, Izuku knew they were closer to his house but a part of his heart didn’t want to stop this conversation. He was ready to spend an entire lifetime with this man who allowed him to feel things he never had before.
“I’m starting to think your eyes are hiding more secrets than you let on.” The teasing tone in Katsuki’s voice suggested that he was also playing this game. It was an unconscious signal they sent to each other in their despair, but something in their souls would lead them to the right path.
“Then you’ll have to search for them if you’re this curious,” the freckled man replied, forcing himself to ignore his racing heart.
Losing himself in this temporary paradise could be dangerous for his beliefs, but it felt great to be himself in the illusion. Maybe their two souls would shine brighter than the stars if fate decided otherwise, but this new adventure was tempting all the same.
“Be careful, because this game could be dangerous but as much as I hate to admit it, I feel like you’re bringing me this hint of the hope I’ve always chased after, but I would let time decide by itself and see if my doubts were right. This story isn’t over but it just started. No need to rush something we might regret later, nerd.”
The blond’s words sounded comforting to Izuku’s ears, and he missed the warmth of the other’s skin. A part of him wanted to feel it again, this light of hope in his life but he knew he shouldn’t. A smile appeared on his face, revealing a slight blush, letting their interactions and all secrets surrounding each other’s presence be taken away by the wind.
“I wouldn’t consider this something to regret if it means knowing more about you,” Izuku explained, trying to figure out what this would mean for the rest of their lives. “Is it selfish of me to ask the stories behind these scars, to see who’s hiding behind this mask you’re wearing?”
Alright, maybe this stranger had completely caught the prince’s attention by his way of thinking. He should also highlight how fluent their conversations were, giving them the impression they had known each other for years. It would be another mystery to solve if the two men were ready to name this comforting feeling in their chest.
Unfortunately, their daydreaming had to stop, because from here, the freckled man could see the small light of his house waiting in the distance.
“This is where I live, so you know where you can capture me now…” he joked, sharing a last look with the taller man. “You probably shouldn’t do such a thing for a peasant like me, you know. After all, you don’t know anything about me, except how I can put the seasonal produce in the wrong place,” confessed the smaller man, revealing a smile and observing how the blond’s face softened.
A soft giggle escaped from his lips, captivating those crimson eyes. For a moment, it sounded like a melody Katsuki wanted to hear every day for the rest of his life, even making him think twice about the whole soulmate thing. Some people could survive and find the love of their lives even if it wasn’t their soulmate…so why should Katsuki’s case differ?
“Maybe, but sometimes life is unfair to the purest souls in this world. This probably won’t change anything in your situation, but if you can survive for another season…Maybe we could meet again, freckles.”
If his words sounded like a promise, it was because they were, at least to him. Katsuki Bakugou wasn’t usually the sort of man able to keep a promise, but this time, he felt like he could wait an entire year and meet this freckled man again. Izuku’s eyes widened at his words, ignoring the blush heating his cheeks before trying to cover his face. It was a bad thing to fall for a stranger when someone was waiting for him somewhere, beyond his home…But it felt right to lose himself in the mesmerizing crimson eyes.
“I hope so,” Izuku answered with a small smile, feeling a sudden wave of happiness blooming in his chest. “It was nice meeting you. I’ll try to look for you next year if you let me.”
The taller man noticed how the expression on his face changed, indicating how this fake smile hid something sadder, but he didn’t want to bother the other with his question. As much as the two men wanted to stay in touch, they were aware of how time and fate would decide the next chapter for them. It wasn’t a bad thing to have hope, especially when they would have a face to dream about during the darkest of nights.
“I won’t miss it for nothing,” finished the blond with a smirk. He sighed, realizing how his chest hurt at the idea of leaving this stranger behind but he had no choice. With one last smirk, he waved goodbye to the freckled man.
Still…as the memories of their previous conversation played back in Katsuki’s mind, something caught his attention. Taking a hidden glance at this mesmerizing stranger comforted his broken heart, knowing he could have another place he could call home. In the past few hours, his curious eyes had noticed the scars on his hands, wondering at the story behind them…ignoring the most important hint. It had never crossed his mind until now as a strange symbol in the freckled man’s wrist, something he’ll never forget: a dragon symbol, colored in the same shade of red as his eyes.
/ “I do think some people deserve to be together, that’s why soulmate marks are here to connect their fate, even in the abyss.”/
His body stopped, connecting the dots. He hadn’t realized until now that this strange feeling in his chest was the result of the prophecy. Aizawa explained how their paths would meet under unexpected circumstances, and the story was written by itself…
This freckled man standing before him was his soulmate.
His body moved on its own, hoping it wasn’t too late as millions of thoughts clamored in his mind. The question sat on the tip of his tongue, ready to be asked and to change his entire life. From afar, his eyes narrowed in on the smaller figure returning home but he couldn’t let him go…not now!
“Freckles,” his loud voice shouted in the silence, awakening the sleeping birds. Izuku’s eyes widened, realizing something was wrong with the other as he caught sight of the stunned expression on his face.
“Are you alright?” Izuku asked, rushing in his direction. He didn’t know what he was expecting, but he could read excitement into these ruby eyes.
Katsuki stayed silent. His lips parted, trying to say something, but the only question crossing his mind was repeating constantly, almost like a drug he desperately needed. Something warm spread across his chest, confirming his previous doubt as the scared hands reached his forehead, checking for a fever.
“-Name,” whispered the blond, feeling his heart beating faster but he needed to know. “What’s your name?”
Izuku’s eyes widened at the sudden question. It wasn’t the first time someone had asked him something so personal, knowing how many people would only describe him as the odd soul living afar from any form of civilization. If everyone acted like he was a ghost in this town, Izuku’s soul begged him to answer this simple question, realizing how someone was genuinely interested in him for the first time in years. Crimson red eyes met emerald ones, full of stars and melting each other’s hearts.
“Izuku Midoriya,” he answered with a smile, as the blond’s expression softened. “What’s yours ?”
At that moment, the background noise returned, bringing him back to reality, and cutting him from his temporary paradise. His eyes didn't let go of the hesitant movements of Izuku, trying to keep a name on this face that was intended for him. With a final smile, Katsuki decided to not rush their relationship, treasuring these memories privately.
“You don’t need to know it yet…but when the time has come, you’ll hear it and figure things out. I’ll be there at every step of this journey…Good luck with finding your soulmate, I bet this person is lucky to have someone like you in their lives.”
Without realizing it, these words would be the last memory they'd have of each other... knowing how it was the first and last time Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya met.

Before the tragedy,
At such a late hour, it was surprising that the walls of this old building were still awake. The most curious looks were lost in the corridors, noticing the familiarity of the voices that resounded in these usually silent halls. There was no doubt that the queen was the first to raise her voice against her son, who spoke louder. No one knew the origin of their dispute, but it was not necessary to intervene when one could just wait for the situation to calm itself.
“Have you lost your mind? You’re not going to leave the walls of this castle, and don’t you dare risk your life for someone you barely know,” she shouted, shattering the previous silence as her cold eyes met Katsuki’s. This was probably the craziest idea her son had since his birth, and she had seen some crazy ones but this one was truly insane.
“How could you use your shitty mouth to talk about someone you never even met,” objected the blond, fighting back. “I have the right to speak because I had an actual conversation with him. No matter what your answer is, I’ll search for him even if it costs me my life because it’s my fucking fate.”
His mother used to be kind and loving, but as the years went by something had changed in their dynamic. Mistuki would always give him the freedom of choice, but the war against the kingdom of the north had been too important for their land. Many lives were sacrificed in this quest for power and success. Back in the day, Mistuki gave him no choice but to join the battlefield against his will. Since that day, the blond had more tension in the relationship he shared with his mother…but this time, he would speak up for himself.
“You’re still too young to know what your actual fate is. I’m your mother and I know what’s best for you, Katsuki,” The queen insisted with a broken stare, almost like this decision was considered a betrayal by her blood.
Katsuki let out a bitter laugh, moving closer and answering with a hateful look on his face. The atmosphere in the room had grown as cold as the winter seasons that had left the country frozen and bare. It was the first time in years that a huge fight like this one exploded.
“Stop pretending to care about me when you can’t even look at your reflection in the mirror. You sent me to the battlefield on my own and against my will when I was only sixteen…How could you expect me to forgive you after such a betrayal from my mother?” The bitterness in his voice felt like it could be heard for millions of kilometers, threatening to wake up the neighboring kingdoms.
However, Mistuki didn't retreat from the threat in her son’s eyes, regardless of whether he was her blood or not. She had sacrificed so much to get here, and Katsuki couldn't change this. If Aizawa had defined the situation this way, nothing could change the future... But the prince had decided otherwise because, since his encounter with Izuku, he could only think of him. His nights were filled with the gentle expression on the freckled man’s face, and the sound of his voice, the only comfort in the face of his nightmares.
Don’t get him wrong, Katsuki knew about the prophecy and he had to wait for the right moment but this was too long. How was he supposed to stay here, stuck in his shitty castle when the nerd was probably moving on, staying with someone else? Even if this thought hurt him, the blond was even willing to be there for him as only a friend….
“I saw him with my own eyes and could recognize him anywhere. There’s nothing wrong with that; you’re just afraid about the reputation our lands will have if they learn about this selfish action. Tell me, Mother…if you truly loved me, you’d choose my happiness.”
The dark tone in his voice created an awkward atmosphere between them. A few curious glances were cast their way, and those who overheard the fight felt bad for listening to such a personal exchange, just like the entire castle. Katsuki was broken; Mistuki’s face was distorted with hate to the point where even her son didn’t recognize her. He knew he had gone too far by spilling this truth, especially given how it would be hard to hear but the lies needed to stop.
“Don’t you dare repeat that,” threatened the queen. “I’ve sacrificed everything for you and this is how you thank me? Fine, take your trip but don’t you dare return or show your face in this castle again.”
“No matter where I go or whatever my destination may be, it will be more welcoming than my own home. This is the last time you’ll hear from me, I’m leaving tonight….Goodbye, Mother.”
Before he could stop them, tears fell down the prince’s cheeks. Katsuki had been stubborn and determined since he was a small boy, and a part of him believed that his freedom would lead him to Izuku’s side. This next chapter of his life was welcoming him most unexpectedly, but it was time to go. That night, the prince left his room, without knowing how he had unconsciously changed the whole story.

Years ago, in the lost village of Wilderness,
The village of Wilderness had always been a lost and hidden place in the mountains, away from the biggest cities occupied by the richest people in the country.
This distinction between their different social classes was more than obvious but it didn't disturb their calm daily life. Everyone knew each other for generations, linking friendships and weddings, births and celebrations, all of which were events that gathered the whole village. Everyone had their place and their specific role without so much as a hint of conflict. Perhaps some remained hidden in the shadows but the curious eyes of Izuku never paid attention to this kind of thing, knowing that it would be temporary.
The first time Izuku had been to this part of the town, he was a small child, discovering the world with his mother. Inko had always been the heartwarming person by his side, even with injuries after a fall or a bad nightmare. His mother had been the most important person in his life until he met his friends and started to write his own story. It had never been easy to adapt, but sometimes his friends would hang out with him and help on the farm for the harvest season. It wasn’t a big luxury, but their laughter and smiles would be enough to ease Inko’s worries about her son’s loneliness.
Today, the freckled man was just another face in this village and he couldn't see the smallest change in the others’ behavior, including his friends. Yet, his doubts confirmed themselves when the whispers around a certain someone started to spread like wildfire in even the most remote of cities. No name was mentioned, but the looks cast upon the statue of this person, the shame on the royal family, and this choice that was considered selfish by some were enough to see some obvious opinions.
That day, Izuku Midoriya was working on his family’s farm, helped by his friends who brought up this latest gossip. He could lie and say that he wasn’t curious, but he played it discreetly and acted distant, continuing his work as they conversed. The smell of hay came to rest in his nostrils, while the wind rustled the leaves, a familiar voice at his side.
“- That’s when the news started to spread like wildfire. As senseless as it may be, most of the rumors say that the royal family has been discreet since this decision of their son. I can’t call it selfish if his quest was to join his other half.” Ochako explained in a matter-of-fact tone. After all, the only one to blame in this situation was her mother, gossiping with the other inhabitants of this small village.
“Unfortunately, none were aware of the tragedy reaching their family the moment they let their son leave the castle…the tragic news was probably hard to hear, even for the strongest soldier,” added Shoto with a sigh. He never had a good relationship with his father, but he could imagine how his family would be broken if the roles were reversed and he’d been the deceased one.
“We should respect his memory and not bring his name down, but I wouldn’t risk such a thing for a person I had never met. There’s something wrong with the idea of searching for your supposed other half when you’re not aware of the path you’re taking,” Iida protested with a bothered tone, never one afraid to share his opinion.
“You’re too hard on him,” objected the freckled man, finally joining the conversation. “From what I’ve heard, only a person full of devotion would be ready to go against his family’s order, especially when they’re royalty. I don’t know…It feels nice to know someone in this world is probably looking to spend the rest of his life with you.”
To be fair, Izuku’s words contradicted his thoughts.
Don’t get him wrong, he was still devoted to his soulmate and would find him in a couple of years if life gave him the chance…but he couldn’t forget about the man he met years ago. Since that day, the taller man with his golden spikes and mesmerizing crimson eyes haunted his dreams, his voice reaching the young man as if his ghost was still there beside him. It was a strange sensation to feel butterflies in his stomach when the stranger appeared in his dream, even if he couldn’t name this unforgettable face. A part of him was missing the fluency of their interaction and chemistry in their eyes, almost like they were destined to each other in another life.
The freckled man couldn’t break the promises he made to his younger self and hoped his soulmate would erase this picture of a ghost he couldn’t forget. Katsuki’s advice helped him more than he expected, especially during the next harvest season when his wares ran out as quickly as he could set them out. The entire time, and for the following year, emerald eyes searched for the crimson ones but the blond never showed up again…much to Izuku’s disappointment.
“Your hopeless romantic side will cost you one day, my dear,” teased the brunette with a laugh. She pushed his shoulder, waking him up from his daydream. It had become a frequent habit since Izuku crossed Katsuki’s path, and his entire group of friends knew the reason behind these hidden smiles. “But I do agree with you, what a shame the last conversation he had with his mother was a fight. From what I’ve heard, the two of them were so loud that it even woke up the children.”
Izuku glanced away, returning to his chores. This topic was sensitive for his vulnerable soul, given how he identified himself in the prince’s situation. The last time he spoke with his mother, it ended up in a fight, forcing the freckled man to ignore her despite her apologizing for the things she said. Inko had never been a bad person, but her overprotectiveness would sometimes keep her son from living his life.
“How can you know so many things? I thought the royal couple made it private…” Shoto questioned, almost like they could get caught from talking behind their back. “After all, the entire kingdom of Musutafu could tell their version, explaining how the queen and king withdrew from their lives as if they had never existed. Since that day, legend has it that the castle is filled with nothing but sadness and constant loneliness. The last smile sketched goes back light years before the drama.. before the couple retreated on themselves.”
“You seem well informed too, so you tell me!” Ochako laughed, knowing their friend would never admit that listening to gossip was a fun activity in their free time.
“Hold on, there’s something I don’t understand…” Izuku’s voice rose back up, catching everyone’s attention. His scarred hands were focused on holding his tools, while drops of sweat dotted his worried face. “You kept mentioning a tragedy but for me, running away is a sign of hope for freedom. Unless I don’t know the entire story but you seem to be more of a subject matter expert than I am.”
Silence filled the room, leaving an awkward atmosphere. It came as no surprise that their friend didn't know about the source of the gossip, but it was hard to explain when his emerald eyes were full of concern. The freckled man had always been sensitive to such stories with sad endings, his empathy certainly the one to blame, but there was something different in his gaze…something none of his friends could understand.
“Oh…” Iida exchanged glances with the others, being sure he could continue. Don’t get them wrong, they would never hurt their friend intentionally, even if some truths deserved to stay hidden. “The prince ran away and left his lands to search for his soulmate across the globe, but his quest ended most cruelly. The legend says how, one night, the prince decided to go to sleep and a couple of travelers found his lifeless body in a cave where he gave his last breath…The rumors suggest that one of his rivals was following the entire time and waited to attack right when he was most vulnerable.”
Izuku’s eyes widened. He heard many tragic stories in the past, but this one was the hardest to listen to, especially when his chest physically ached at the mention of this man’s fate. He would blame his empathy, even if there was something else rising in his soul, begging to erase what he just heard. He couldn’t help but imagine how this poor soul was so close to reaching his goal and didn’t have the time to say a last goodbye to the very reason for his sudden change of life.
“That is heartbreaking,” pointed out the freckled man, blinking back tears. “Do you have any information about where his body was found?”
“It’s the most surprising part of the story because the entire mystery revolves around his last location and the notebook he was keeping. The last trace of his presence on earth was stolen by his rival to erase all the hints incriminating him but prepare yourself…because his body was found in a cave just a few meters away from the entrance of our village.”
He thought there was no way someone would ever find a small village like theirs, but this prince proved him wrong. Izuku couldn’t believe a murder happened so close to his home, implying they could be their next targets if someone with bad intentions reached their entrance
“But it’s impossible! What would a stranger, a member of royalty, do on our land? Except for sheep and vegetables, we have nothing of interest!!”
Something felt wrong about this story, almost like the most important part was missing, but it would forever remain hidden with the prince’s dead body. Maybe it was because his empathy was greater than most but the freckled man felt a sharp pang in his chest, as if indirectly connected to the story of this stranger. From time to time, some of the mystery was hidden for specific reasons, and Izuku knew that he would not yet be ready to open that door.
“If you’re so curious, you could ask his ghost. Toga claims her abilities to communicate with ghosts could save lives. Won’t you be her first client ?” Ochako wondered with a funny expression drawing itself on her lips. Although she never wanted to see a sad expression on her friend’s face, she knew it would only be temporary.
“You’re the one mentioning it but why don’t you go ahead and ask her to hang out with you if it’s the question you have left on your lips?” Shoto objected with a teasing tone, punching her shoulder and facing the blush on her cheeks.
The funniest part of this group of friends he created was how some love story had already begun among them. If Shoto already had a secret partner, he refused to show, but Ochako would constantly talk about how her crush on Toga was the most complicated thing in the world. Sometimes Izuku wished he could share the same kind of story with his friends instead of daydreaming of the mesmerizing blond that had been occupying his mind for years.
“Because your stupid and innocent souls can never understand that loving the same gender is a more complicated mission than the other sex. There’s a thin border between love and friendship...and anyway, women are also complicated so the fight remains the same if you ask me. Men, women…why is love so complicated?” the brunette complained with a groan, leaving her tool on the ground as a bright shade of red spread across her face, reaching the tips of her ears.
That day, Izuku remembered watching from afar as the brunette was constantly teased by their friends about making the next move. A smile appeared on his face, and he wished the taller man he met at the harvest day were there by his side to watch this scene. Sometimes his lips would try to work out his name, but the only remaining memory was his beautiful face….
——
Back to the present,
Although the memories took Izuku to a world full of color for a moment, the bitter taste of revelations couldn't be erased from his soul.
No matter how hard he tried to remember a ghost he had hunted before, there was nothing he could do. Izuku stood condemned with only the salty taste of his tears. The wind seemed to have died down a bit, taking pity on his trembling figure and the scarred hands that continued to trace the name of the one he had sought all his life. The sky was overcast and the rain began to fall around him, restoring a semblance of life to the last remaining plants, and camouflaging Izuku’s tears. All his life, Izuku had dreamed of being able to confide all his insecurities and hopes within his soulmate, and to have that feeling of pure love waiting for him at the end of the road, but this was only an illusion hiding this sad reality.
All this time, Katsuki Bakugou had chased after him, sacrificing his last breath in the most important quest of his life, leaving him with unfulfilled promises. Izuku had finally found his freedom and what he had been looking for the entire time but he would be the only one celebrating this victory. It was supposed to be their story, but Katsuki would never be with him to celebrate this new chapter of their life....drowning the freckled man in endless hopes. It would make sense now why the stranger he met at the harvest day would ask his name, looking at him with amazed eyes.
If only Izuku knew about the tragic fate waiting for him, maybe he would’ve stopped him and insisted on learning his name. Maybe their eyes would’ve met in awe and caught the other’s soulmate marks on their wrist. In another reality, they would’ve been together, resting in a hidden place, away from the world, and being satisfied with each other’s presence. Their mornings wouldn’t be met with cold silence and a half-empty bed, but by the welcoming warmth of the other, followed by a hidden and genuine smile. Their lips would’ve shared so many secrets, promising the world to each other, even in the darkest times instead of facing the bitter tears.
If only they had known…maybe they’d rewrite this entire story to their advantage, their names inscribed in history books. In a perfect world, the two men would’ve probably danced like an old couple reliving their youth during their wedding in Izuku’s village. His mind started to trip over many “What ifs”, letting his tears mix with the cold raindrops on his face, realizing how all of this would’ve been perfect if fate hadn’t been so unfair to them.
This stranger he had been chasing his entire life, dreams of which comforted him in the cold, lonely nights, was the same man that caught his heart since that first day. Nothing would change the way Izuku’s memories would recall getting lost in those mesmerizing crimson-red eyes, and their voices filling the quiet woods as they walked to his home. It was unfair to ignore all the hints before him and still hope someone would walk behind him, and put a hand on his shoulder before meeting the familiar figure of Katsuki. In his gut, the freckled man knew this emptiness would never fade away, no matter how he lost himself in his despair.
“You should’ve told me,” mumbled the freckled man between hidden sobs.
His fingers reached the cold gravestone, praying that somewhere else, his lover was hearing him. They could have had the happy ending they deserved, but they wasted it by making the wrong choices…and it cost Katsuki’s life. It was strange to feel how a part of your soul fades away the moment you face death most unexpectedly, no matter if it was on the battlefield or standing in front of a grave.
The emptiness in his chest mixed with a wave of trepidation that came back like a slap in the face, snapping him back to his sad reality. No matter his hopes, no one would stand by him in his darkest nights, and this name that escaped from his lips would only be a vain call to the last ounce of hope. Coming all this way to face such a powerful conversation with silence was never in his plan, and yet it was fated from the beginning.
“One glance,” Izuku confessed, putting his head against the grave. “One glance, that’s all it would take to change the course of our lives. One word would have convinced me to run away with you, especially when I spent my whole life looking for you. Why are you acting so selfishly by leaving me alone…I just found you, I’m not ready to say my last goodbye.”
He wished he could feel the warmth of the other’s hands around his shoulder, or hear the sound of his voice near his ears, comforting his misery. He would never be the same after this tragic discovery. Living without any dream to chase didn’t feel like an option. After all, why should he keep living when Katsuki was out of reach and never had this chance?
“You tried to reach me when I was out of reach but I didn’t know, and if I did…I would’ve held your hands on this journey. Instead, you decided to write your own story by playing the hero but the truth is how I hate you, Katsuki Bakugou.”
The sound of rain drowned out his tears lost in the wind that carried them away to more distant lands. A part of Izuku wished that the wind carried his words to the air, hoping that the blond’s ghost would accompany him in this last farewell. His hair and his clothes were drenched, and the sad look of the guard who stood in the distance bore witness to the awful truth Izuku had to bear. From afar, Izuku’s voice could be heard, breaking the silence and expressing the thing he never had the strength to confess, and would never do.
“I hate the fact that you left before me without any final goodbye, thinking I’ll be alright with facing your ghosts in each of my dreams. I hate the fact that you chased after me and were about to reach me again, you could’ve been mine if this bastard didn’t take you first. I hate the fact that I wasn’t good enough to ignore my duties and search for you…because we could’ve been each other’s saviors.”
The words left his lips unconsciously but it didn’t feel right to curse Katsuki’s name, especially when deep in his gut, Izuku could never hate an impressive soul like his. Don’t get him wrong, they didn’t know anything about each other but this chemistry and connection had been there since the first moment their eyes met. Izuku couldn’t help but sob louder while his memories replayed again, remembering the smile on the blond’s face, the way his crimson eyes softened, and how their meeting was written for a specific reason.
“In the end, we can’t be the heroes of our own stories but I know you would’ve been mine if you stayed. I can’t imagine how you would just feel, watching my broken soul begging you to return from the dead when we both know it’s impossible. I’m aware of the many blank pages we had for ourselves, still ready to be filled with our adventures…but I’ll leave this part of my life belonging to you and only you,” he confessed, his eyes glued to the familiar name.
His fingers gently traced the letters printed on this grey stone, imagining the soft cheeks of the prince instead. They both had so many mysteries to solve, but Izuku would let his broken heart dictate the rest of the story. There was no reason to keep fighting against something unable to bring back his only reason to survive. From now on, Katsuki Bakugou would remain the memory of a brave soldier, a loyal lover to this soulmate he would never meet a second time.
“We didn’t know about each other’s past, but I’m sure your story was worth sharing with the world, not forgotten like so many great names this world has known. Your story is not so different from mine; after all, we were not made to live together in the same timeline, but I hope you will wait in another life. Maybe you will find another person with whom to share your smiles, and your nights and give all your confidence...but I will wait as long as it takes to see your face again.”
This time, the freckled man accepted the tears and let his heart speak for itself, despite the crazy situation. His past self would’ve never thought he would face such constant sadness, swallowing him into his misery.
“A last goodbye,” sobbed the freckled man, holding the grave tighter.
He let his sobs fill the silence, holding onto the old tombstone as if it were the blond’s shoulder. A part of him begged the stars and the gods watching this sad show to bring his lover back…one last time.
“The only thing I’m asking is a last goodbye where your lips would shape my name, and I’ll whisper yours in answer. A last smile to make sure I’m memorizing the beauty of your face, knowing you’ll leave me in the next few minutes. You have no idea how many things I would do to face you one last time, to touch your skin and to hear your story, to face your tears, and to be yours…even if only temporarily.”
The freckled man surprised himself, expressing things he never realized until now, leading to bitter laughter in his confession. Talking about hope to a grave would be desperate for most, but not for these lands that saw the death of a soldier. Katsuki was many things, but he would always be someone Izuku admired and who he would have liked to know more.
“Pretending is always easier in the books. Why can’t I erase this constant pain in my chest knowing you’re gone and will never return…Am I too selfish to wish you’d look at me in the eyes and say how beautiful I am? I can picture my lonely nights with your presence by my side, reassuring my worries but I can’t have that.”
It was stupid to confess all of this in a one-sided conversation, but it would be the only moment where he would have peace with himself. Here, no one could judge him because his soul was already gone the moment he learned the truth. His younger self had so much hope for his future, but it vanished in a few seconds…almost like it never existed.
“I can’t act like we never existed, even if it’s temporary and it didn’t last forever as we expected. I can’t move on and find someone else when my heart and soul will always belong to you…because we have belonged together since the beginning. The stars were aligned in our fate, leading us to taste the forbidden for a moment before taking away the only man I loved until my last breath.” Izuku sighed, wiping his teary eyes and smiling.
Maybe this reality would be hard to face, but he’d stay alive for Katsuki. His only reason to survive was to meet his soulmate in his dreams when the world would belong to them again. It would only last a few hours, but this happiness could erase the sadness spreading in his chest and consuming his soul. Each second felt like it would drive him insane if he trusted this healing process…but he’d do all of this for Katsuki.
“As crazy as it sounds, I’ll make sure to remember the man who made me laugh that day, the one saving me by buying me all my stand despite my teary eyes and how ridiculous I was. I’ll remember how your eyes were similar to priceless jewels, wondering if they’d shine my way once again. I’ll make sure to let the world know your name as long as I’m alive, before being buried by your side to make sure we’ll meet in the afterlife.”
Izuku Midoriya had never been the kind of man to break a promise. His mother would have been proud of him for his loyalty, and Katsuki wasn’t an exception. His future wouldn’t be as bright as he expected, but his nights would be filled with the comforting crimson eyes and warmth against his cheeks. This illusion of his deceased lover would never be the same as the real laughter and smiles they shared that day…but it would save him temporarily. They never had the time to write their own story, but somewhere else, Katsuki was watching each of his movements…at least it was what Izuku said to himself to comfort his tears.
“Call me crazy, but I still believe in us and you visiting my nights. I promise this is not our final goodbye, Katsuki Bakugou. From this day and until my last breath, I’m giving you my entire heart and soul, because you owned them both from the moment our eyes met.”
A genuine smile appeared on his face, accepting his vulnerability. Izuku knew he would never find peace, but he could stay a little longer with his soulmate, trying to read into the lines, and wondering how their lives would’ve been if they had met earlier. At that moment, Izuku started to pray and beg the divinites observing the sad scene, to reunite him with Katsuki in their next life, no matter how many years or disappointments stood in his path.
Perhaps in the next life, the two men would be able to share their tears, smiles, worries, and stolen glances…
