Work Text:

Song peaked out of her little cave in Cactus Town. Despite being in the desert, the weather had dractically started to change into a more chilly temperature. It was winter.

She's been stuck in the body of a Mega Monkey for five winters now. Five years under Dr. Emilia's control. They were no close to finding the burrow where Lio and Kipo was hiding than when they started. Song was happy about that.

Her husband and her baby was safe. Although her baby wasn't a baby anymore. She would be turning six soon. Song wondered how she looked like. If she was taller than everyone in her class like her dad used to be, or if she was one of the shortest like her mom.

She wondered if she had a big gap in her mouth from where she would have started to lose her baby teeth. She wondered if she had a love for science like both of her parents. If her mind was just sucking in any information that she learned.

She wondered if her husband and her baby were doing okay. If they were still thinking about her just as much as she was thinking about them.

Suddenly, a snowflake landed on her nose. And then another one. And another one. They were falling from the sky quicker after every second that went by. It was winter again, and she would have to spend it alone without her family. She would have to spend it as a mind-controlled puppet, forced to destroy any burrow that could lead to her family. She didn't want to, but she had no choice.

She sighed and got back into her cave, hiding from the snow. She shuddered, despite the fur that coated her skin.

It was winter again, and despite feeling lonely, it was worth it as long as her family stayed safe somewhere far away. As she watched the snow fall in front of the opening to her hiding spot, she imagined getting to see her daugher again, this time all grow up. Not a newborn baby lying peacefully in her arms. She wouldn't recognize her mom, but her mom could recognize her anywhere.

She laid down on the ground, forcing herself to fall sleep despite the cold. Maybe one day she would actually get to see them again. And if she did, all those winters spent alone would be worth it.
