Work Text:
I playfully swung my dagger in between my fingers waiting for the boss to show up after he declared a meeting for an emergency mission. A strange inkling that he’s planning something by the sudden call to do a mission after I just finished one lingers in the back of my mind. He’s not one to do this usually but I push the thought away, trusting my boss who I’ve been working under for years. Unless he’s doing something stupid again, it has happened before.
My grip tightens anxiously on my dagger hearing the creaky door hinges from behind me that echo through the office, announcing the presence of someone. I hurriedly remove my legs dangling over the leg of the chair and sit up straighter only aware of the boss calling me in for this mission. But when I glance back, my neutral expression turns into a scowl making direct eye contact with my greatest competition in our department. Sim Jaeyun.
The dagger in my hands begging to be set free to throw at him but I tucked it away with a silent sigh knowing that wouldn’t be a smart move. It wouldn’t get me anything except fulfill my own selfish desire to stick this dagger right through him. But the real question is what the hell is he doing here? I thought this was a solo mission. A similar expression mirroring my own appears on his displeased face, his hand casually pulling out his phone to check to make sure he read the boss’s message right.
“He messaged you about this mission too?” Jaeyun asks, sitting in the seat next to mine and clicking his phone back into the holder he had on his belt for it. My eyes linger there longer than intended seeing the leather pants hugging his thighs ever so tightly, but I divert my eyes almost as soon as they begin to trail down his legs longer than I’d like to admit. This is no time to get distracted by his thighs of all things. Damn you, Sim Jaeyun, for wearing leather pants today of all days.
“Sadly but I wouldn’t have taken on the mission if I had known you were assigned to it as well,” I say flatly knowing the feeling was mutual from the not so subtle rivarily we’ve had brewing for years, “I thought this was a solo mission.”
“Couldn't agree more,” he mumbles under his breath and nothing more is said for the next few minutes. A somewhat tense silence engulfs the atmosphere but when the door creaks loudly again, the boss enters with a small smile and a large file in his hands. Great, the mission must be a more complex one too.
“Good you’re both here already,” the boss says, adjusting his tie before he sits in his large rolling chair behind his desk. He lays the file on the desk with a heavy sigh and absentmindedly taps his finger on it, “This mission may be the most important mission I’ve ever asked you both to take on.”
“I’m honored, sir,” I thank him with a small smile immediately before he can go on, but feel a pinch of annoyance at the sudden announcement of a mission. Not only that, but I’ll be taking it on with Jaeyun of all people, “truly I am but I must ask, does it have to be done alongside him?”
“You’re both the top spies of the agency in comparison to anyone, nobody can even come close to you two. The both of you have managed to complete missions in under a day that took other spies months. For this job, I need the best of the best,” he states and pushes the large file towards us, “and that’s final.”
I don’t miss the way Jaeyun scoffs quietly but accepts the command of the boss nonetheless, grabbing the file without a word. His fingers annoyingly tapping against the stack of papers waiting for the next order from the boss. I grumble under my breath when ignoring the way his fingers seem to be almost if they’re drumming right in my ears instead of on the paper. I take a copy of the same file, holding it under my arm and groan internally at how heavy it feels. Great, lots of reading to just make it even better.
The meeting feels agonizingly slow but as soon as the words leave the boss’s mouth dismissing us, neither of us can bear to say in each other’s presence a second more. It’s only outside of the office does Jaeyun slip me a small paper making me raise an eyebrow at him in question. He mutters a quiet curse but he takes my free hand, opening up my palm and nonchalantly places a piece of paper in my hand.
“It’s my number,” he states with a roll of his eyes, “we need to be able to contact one another in case anything goes wrong or we get separated somehow. Send me a message as soon as possible so that I can save your number as well.”
“Thanks,” I say with a fake smile, “I’ll make sure to do that.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow for the mission,” he replies with a dismissive gesture to my fake ‘thanks’ causing the feeling of a bug crawling up my arms in pure annoyance. How the hell am I supposed to work with this guy? Let alone do a mission?
The thought itself plagues my mind for the rest of the night, leaving me restless.

I lean against the brick wall in the alleyway we agreed upon to meet up in before heading to the actual location of the mission. The color black entirely covers my body as the sun begins to set upon the clouds; the perfect time to go bust someone for their darkest secrets. Yet my hand clenches against the black gloves I’m wearing knowing today’s mission was going to be the hardest mission we’ve ever attempted. And with the person I’ve been trying to avoid working with for years on end. But I try to ease my mind by thinking through everything we have to do again.
Break into the house of the CEO of ParadoXXX inc. and find any traces of the drugs that they’ve been dealing on the side in secret for the past five years.
“You ready?” A voice asks startling me out of my thoughts and I have to stop myself from pulling my dagger out when seeing a familiar figure in all black. Jaeyun chuckles with a smirk seeing my somewhat surprised reaction, “you should be on more high alert if you’re a spy, you know.”
“Shut up,” I retorted and gestured for him to lead the way, “let’s just get this over with, shall we?”
“Why don’t you lead the way m’lady,” he teases as his hand makes a jokingly grand gesture towards the exit of the alleyway.
“You’re so extra,” I mumble under my breath but he catches it causing a husky chuckle to escape him, “if you didn’t know the way you could’ve just said so.”
“Very funny but I bet you’ll be the one to get lost in the end and need me to guide us there anyways,” he playfully jabs back but I blatantly ignore his words trying to stay focused on the task at hand.

The hallways of the CEO’s mansion are eerily silent, sending a cold chill down my spine. Jaeyun crouches by my side, hugging the wall as he checks to see if the coast is clear. My gaze follows his movements but a sort of sick feeling tugs at my gut. It’s almost too convenient so far, there has been nobody guarding the front or back of the mansion. Neither of us spotted security cameras except the one on the driveway and worst of all, there hasn’t been a single sound or trace of someone being inside the mansion itself. It’s as if the mansion has been left vulnerable on purpose. It feels all too easy.
But I can’t linger on the thought for long when Jaeyun gestures that it’s clear to maneuver our way to the supposed study of the CEO. Our bodies never leave the wall adjacent to the door of the study. My eyes swiftly but precisely scanning the expanse of the empty hallway waiting for any sign of movement. My nerves heightened by the strange atmosphere that engulfs the mansion. But I try to ignore the feeling hoping my gut reaction is wrong. Yet when a hand suddenly tugs me inside the study without warning, I have to repress a scream only to see a smiling Jaeyun staring back at me.
He really is the worst.
“What the hell?” I whisper irritatedly but he gestures to the already open door with a nonchalant shrug. I huff out quietly in annoyance not wanting to deal with this and just get on with the mission, muttering under my breath, “that was not necessary.”
“Maybe, but it was fun,” he whispers back with a little playful smirk and gives my nose a small boop. I wipe my nose feigning disgust by the gesture which makes him chuckle. I have to resist the urge to throw a hard punch into his arm but for the sake of this mission, I decide not to.
Although his playful demeanor disappeared so fast as his eyes began to survey the room. I wouldn’t have even noticed the tiny change if I hadn’t been watching his every movement. I follow his eyes that glance between the desk and the bookcase within the room, his subtle sign that he thinks these are the places we should look first. I can’t help silently agreeing and glance towards the door, but have to hide any trace of surprise in my face when seeing it already closed.
The flash of a smile appears on his lips reading the slightest bit of surprise on my face. But the expression is gone before I can say anything about it, “stay on alert, I don’t trust this place but you know what we’ve got to do.”
I nod my head in acknowledgement to his statement even if a little part of me still yearns to kick his shin for suddenly pulling me inside the office like that. Although I reluctantly brush off the urge knowing there is a lot riding on this mission. Jaeyun nods back and without wasting a single second goes to search the desk where we presume the evidence we are looking for is in, or at least we hope.
I immediately begin to scan the bookshelves of the CEO’s personal office inside his mansion looking for any signs of suspicion but I can’t find a single thing misplaced. Not a single sign of clutter and it irks me. Everything seems so orderly, too. Almost as if it’s just been cleaned. That same gut wrenching feeling swims in the bottom of my stomach at the thought. Does someone actually leave their office this clean? Or is it possible they don’t use this office at all?
Then it hits me, the idea that this is a set-up. That they knew people would come in search of evidence to destroy the coverup of their underground business If this isn’t his actual office, then it’s a set up. He knew people-
The sound of the door creaking open sends my heart into a racing panic. Pure instinct takes over when heading over to the desk Jaeyun was inspecting and dragging him down under it with me without warning. I could tell he’s about to curse me out but I hurriedly placed a finger over his lips. My heart pounds against my chest so loudly I can barely make out the faint footsteps in the room getting closer and closer to the desk. I hold my breath thinking that this might be it. It’s only then that Jaeyun’s eyes widen slightly hearing the approaching footsteps, realizing the amount of danger we’re in but I refuse to move my finger. Even moving a single muscle terrifies me to no end as both of us listen intently to every footstep being taken that is not ours. I can feel my heart stop from the way they circle the desk as a low hum escapes their lips before saying, “I thought I heard something, must’ve been my imagination.”
The sound of slow but prominent retreating feet towards the door echoes in our ears, but it’s not until the click of the door that Jaeyun gently takes my finger and moves it away from his face. Only then did I realize how close the two of us were and how…intimate the position we were in had been.
Yet neither of us dared to move, not certain if the threat has truly left. I didn’t even notice the slight shake of my hand until Jaeyun gently squeezed it. I try to recenter my focus on the threat but it’s hard to think about that when I can feel Jaeyun’s other hand resting against my hip. A weird in between of holding it firmly enough to support my weight but loosely enough that I barely even felt it there. It’s hard not to notice it now that my mind isn’t completely filled to the brim in pure anxiety as a few minutes have passed.
I could feel the way his fingers graze my waist just enough for me to notice but they didn’t linger in one place for long. A little smirk rests on his face making me want to crawl into a hole further and further until I cannot be found. I don’t know what to think with his back pressed up against the inside hallowed cubby of the desk and myself kneeled between his bent legs, staring right into his chest. The hand he gently pulled away from his lips, now carefully laying against his chest with a small smirk. He holds my hand there, right on top of his wildly beating heart. And I could feel it under my finger tips, the way every single time it pounded it would send a pulse of warmth through my palm.
“If you wanted to feel my muscles that badly,” he whispers with that same husky chuckle that I loved to despise. His head cocks to the side slightly as he gestures to my other hand that rests on top of his bicep, gripping it just enough for him to notice, “you could’ve just asked me, sweetheart.”
My face grows hot at the statement and the flirtatious claim, “this is not the time for any of your weirdly timed flirty comments and you know that wasn’t on purpose!”
“Then when is the time?,” he questions back quietly with a playful glint in his eye. His gaze is so piercing, so entrancing I fear I may fall into it or more so fall for him, “tell me.”
“Jaeyun-” I start but cut myself thinking I once again hear the sound of soft footsteps. My breath stops for what feels like forever, unsure of what to do next except listen intently. There are a few silent moments between us as I listen to every single sound around me, tuning into everything. Even the way that Jaeyun takes the most silent yet thoughtful breaths. It’s only when I’m certain we’re in the clear that I let my lungs expand and take in the breath I crave so naturally, “can we do this anytime but right now?”
“You say that but after this you’re going to avoid me again,” he scoffs lightly under his breath with a roll of his eyes, “just like every other time I try to talk to you at the agency.”
“Of course, I do,” I state still in a hushed whisper, “you hate me, so why should I bother trying to speak to you?”
“Who ever said that, hmm?” Jaeyun asks, leaning closer until he’s only an inch or so from my face, “those words have never left my lips, sweetheart. That assumption was made on your own.”
“Then why did you always tease me?” I ask quietly, feeling at a loss for words, “I swear since the first day I started, you’ve teased me about every little thing.”
“Because I was trying to flirt with you but it seems I made the wrong impression on you sweetheart,” he replies, taking the hand that was holding mine to his chest and tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, “but I went along with it. I thought you were playing hard to get. I didn’t think that you thought I hated you.”
“Wait-” I whisper back feeling flustered by his words and needing a moment to process everything he’s saying, “so you really don’t hate me?”
“Oh, please, far from it,” he says quietly with the hint of a smirk resting on his lips seeing that same playful glint in his eye reappear, “would someone who hates you do this?”
“Do what-”
I stare wide-eyed at him when his lips collide with mine without warning. I’m left breathless without an idea of what to do. Everything feels at a standstill in this one moment. The feeling of his lips against mine sends what feels like an electric shock throughout my body and it’s so addicting, I want to do it over and over again until I can’t feel it anymore. I want him to keep his lips on mine, the subtle fear of this being a dream lingering when he’s kissing me so passionately. All the heightened nerves I have become hotter under his touch, his hand falling to the back of my neck pulling me into him.
My thoughts are a mess from this stupidly attractive man, but why can’t I pull myself away from him? It’s only when I give a small squeeze to his bicep in a desperate plea for air does he part our lips. His hot breath is still hitting my lips that are tingling from the heated kiss. A dashingly handsome smirk resting on his lips at the sight of my flustered face as his tongue sweeps out to lick his bottom lip sending a hot shiver down my spine.
“To do that,” he whispers as his lips brush lightly against mine from how dangerously close he still is to me, “sweetheart.”
“T-This isn’t part of the mission,” I stutter out weakly in an attempt to redirect the attention to our mission. The main priority being to avoid his eyes when I feel myself grow overwhelmed and not knowing how to react to this unaccounted for situation, “we still need to find that damn evidence.”
“You mean this?” he whispers back, taking one of his hands to grab a bag of what looks like white chalk out from his back pocket nonchalantly. A wildly attractive grin on his face seeing my mouth go agape at the sight, “I’d say we’re right on target.”
When did he? Where was it this whole time? Thoughts swarm my brain like a hive of bees but it’s quickly silenced when he silently gestures to the top drawer of the desk, “this dude really is an idiot. He put it in the top drawer with no lock or anything.”
“You are truly insane,” I mumble under my breath knowing the blush that still clearly coats my cheeks is very prevalent, “you do know that, don’t you?”
He chuckles huskily, his eyes half lidded when he leans towards me just enough to whisper in my ear, “only for you, sweetheart.”
