Heads and Tails

Summary:

Tech has always been the outsider of the Batch, even in a squad full of outsiders. That is, until a new clone joins their squad, Star. Besides being a female, Tech notices other things that make Star different from most people.

A late night conversation finally voices what Tech already knew.

———————————

This is my first time writing a fic, and it’s probably going to be really bad.

Basically, it will follow Star and the batch through the end of the war, ending in what will probably align with the events of season 3. This won’t be a Tech/OC thing, but more of a close friends relationship :)

UPDATE:03/07/26

Woah, so it’s been super long since I picked this fic up and looking back, my writing has improved immensely since then. So, I’m thinking I’m going to rewrite this fic, but probably within another fic because I really just want to start over with it because the pacing is really fast in this and I want to slow things down a bit. As of now, this fic is abandoned, but stay tuned for a reboot I guess?

Chapter 1: Story of Us

Chapter Text

Oh, a simple complication

Miscommunication leads to fallout

So many things that I wish you knew

So many walls up I can’t break through

-Story of Us, Taylor Swift

Star had been a loner most of her life. Well, more like all of it. Since she was a cadet, Star knew there was something fundamentally different about her. Something wrong.

For one, she was a girl. For two, she didn’t think the same way those around her did.

No, something was very, very wrong with her.

Well, that was until she was assigned to Clone Force 99, the Bad Batch. While most would never want to associate with them, Star wanted nothing more than to find someone who understood her.

So that was that. One day during her third year, she was transferred.

While she certainly wasn’t disappointed by the move, she was unhappy with how much she stuck out of their team.

It started off small. With comments about how different she was.

“You talk more than Tech.”

“Why are you so obsessed with that?”

“Why can’t you focus on anything worthwhile?”

“What makes you worth being with us?”

It was usually Crosshair, and he was mean to everyone. But on some occasions, Hunter would reprimand her for being stuck in her head during simulations.

She could understand though. Star would give anything to just fit in. But it seems the Kaminoans had cursed her with being even more different than those she trusted most.

It had been years since Star was a cadet, but one thing stayed the same. Her brain just couldn’t seem to be like the others. Her intelligence rivaled that of Tech, but she just couldn’t seem to think straight and use it!

This led to arguments, and fights between her and the others. Well, all of them besides Tech.

Star didn’t really know what to think of the Engineer. There was some connection between the two, but she just couldn’t seem to understand what it was.

“Star, have you been listening to anything I’ve been saying?”

Hunter was practically glaring at her, his brows furrowed, scowling. And it was Star’s fault. She just was so zoned into whatever she was working on-what was that again?-that she couldn’t seem to listen to Hunter.

Hunter slammed his fist down in frustration before storming out of the cockpit. Star brought her hands to cover her ears. Even if it was only once, she found herself anxious.

Too loud. Too loud. Too loud.
