make it forever

Summary:

A couple of years ago, Kim would never have guessed she’d be here - living in a house with Adam, co-parenting turned into a relationship, turned into an engagement. It was something she used to dream about; but gave up on when she returned the ring and again when she lost the baby.

And now?

It seemed as if all the pieces were finally coming together.

Notes:

I will admit that I have not watch regularly Chicago PD since the beginning of season 10. However, I have seen vague scenes since them - so if any details are wrong; that's why. But I did see the proposal scene and I'm still SCREAMING over it; because I have waited a whole ass decade for this. I won't really believe it until they're walking down the aisle because I don't trust Gwen; but for now, I'm still kind of on a high.

I guess this quick little thing was born out of that; I'm sure we probably won't see the direct aftermath of the proposal; so I thought I'd write it myself.

Work Text:

She wakes up in the morning, fighting to keep the last vestiges of sleep, wanting to cling to the dream she was having. But if the sun shining through the window tells her that the alarm is probably going to go off fairly soon.

Even still, she shuffles deeper into the warmth of the covers, just for the arm around her to tighten and her bedmate snuggles further into the crook of her shoulder.

“Don’t get up,” Adam grumbles.

“We do have work ,” Kim reminds him, reaching her hand over and running it over his arm.

Adam lifts his head to glance over where her phone was sitting on the bedside table and grumbles again. “Can’t we just stay in our own blissful bubble.”

“Torres is still out until next week… we’re technically short staffed, so no, we can’t,” she tells him; even if she would love nothing more than that.

At that moment, her alarm goes off and a groan slips past her lips. She reluctantly rolls over, pulling out of Adam’s grasp and grabs the device to turn it off.

“So much for staying in a newly engaged bliss for longer.”

Kim falters slightly at that; but then her left hand catches in the sunlight and glints, causing the corners of her mouth to upturn. She falls back against the pillow and holds her hand up. “So it wasn’t a dream.”

“Best damn dream I’d had in a while if it was.”

Kim leans forward then and presses her lips to his, a quick brush before she pulls back, leaving her head against his. “We’re really engaged.”

“Yeah, we are,” he breathes out, almost as if he can’t believe it either.

“You really kept it?” Kim says, almost whimsical as she glances at the ringer on her finger. “After all these years?”

Adam shifts slightly so that he can lean against the headboard. “I couldn’t get rid of it… maybe it’s crazy, but a part of me just wouldn’t let me.”

“Doesn’t seem too crazy now.”

Adam presses a kiss into her shoulder. “What are you thinking about over there?”

She knows they need to get out of bed, start getting ready for work, get Makayla feed and out the door for school; but there’s always confirmation that she needs before she leaves this bed.

“You mean it,” Kim says, slowly, turning towards him. “What you said last night? Cause, you, me, Mak - this family. It’s what I need , Adam. I don’t think I can lose that again.”

“I meant every word,” he responds, so simply and so sure of himself. “And I’ll spend the rest of our lives proving that to you. Whatever it takes…I want to make sure this works this time.”

In truth, she knows that; he’s already proven it to her; the way he’s been with Makayla, with her , their efforts in therapy. The way that somehow they’ve already managed to fall into the perfect domestic lifestyle and how it just works.

Maybe it won’t be easy ; but if the last year is anything to go by; they can get through it.

A knock at the door pulls Kim’s attention away, but her smile stays. “Then we better let Makayla know that her parents are getting married.”

Adam grins just as Kim calls for Makayla to come in and she barrels into their room, jumping on the bed. “It’s time for breakfast,” she announces as she flops down between them.

Kim steals a look with Adam before turning towards Makayla, reaching out her right hand for her daughter. “But first, your dad and I have something we want to share with you.”

Makayla sits back on her legs, staring between the two of them, an eyebrow raising. “What is it?”

“How would you feel,” Kim begins slowly, tilting her head. “If your dad and I got married?”

Makayla continues to glance between the two of them, her eyes widening. “Are you serious?”

Kim grins, holding up her left hand, showing off the ring that now dawns her ring finger.

Makayla lets out a gasp, mouth falling open and a grin appearing on her face. “You’re really getting married?”

“Yeah, Mak, we are,” Adam says.

Makayla squeals and claps her heads together. “Does this mean that I get to be the flower girl?”

Kim chuckles, reaching over and wrapping her arms around Makayla, pulling the girl into a hug. “It’ll be a while before we make all the plans; but you’re definitely going to be our flower girl.”

Adam leans over and presses a kiss to Makayla’s forehead. “Now that we’ve got the excitement out of the way, who’s ready for breakfast?”

“Me!” Makayla shouts before leaping off of the bed, sprinting down the hallway, leaving Kim and Adam to just chuckle after her as they slid out of bed.

“You start breakfast,” Kim says, reaching for the flat sheet. “I’ll get the bed.”

Adam quickly crosses the room, coming to a stop in front of Kim to press a quick kiss to her lips. “Anything for my fiancé .”

“Okay.”

She stands here, hand suspended in mid air as she stares after her fiancé's retreating form as he heads to make dinner for their daughter.

Her fiancé .

Their daughter.

A couple of years ago, Kim would never have guessed she’d be here - living in a house with Adam, co-parenting turned into a relationship, turned into an engagement . It was something she used to dream about; but gave up on when she returned the ring and again when she lost the baby.

And now?

It seemed as if all the pieces were finally coming together.

“Okay, what gives?”

Kim drapes her jacket over the back of her chair and glances over at Kevin. Well, they had thankfully avoided Trudy downstairs, the desk seregnat’s being pulled from the desk had allowed them slip up the stairs to Intelligence without a fuss.

Kim knew it was only a matter of time before Trudy found out, along with the rest of the district; but she fully understood that there were certain people she wanted to know first.

But she wouldn’t make it easy. “What?”

Kevin gestures towards Kim with a pointed look , as if that’s answer enough. “You’re way too happy for this early in the morning and from that case yesterday.” He turns his gaze and settles on Adam. “You both are, actually.”

“Really gearing up for that detectives exam, aren’t ya Atwater.”

Kevin crosses his arms and leans against the side of his desk. “Changing the subject is suspicious behavior.”

Kim shares a glance with Adam and arches an eyebrow, Adam just shoots her a smile. She turns back to Kevin. “We’re engaged,” she says, simply.

Kevin drops his hands. “You’re serious?”

Kim holds up her left hand, the ring twinkling under the bullpen lights. “For serious.”

“Holy shit,” Kevin responds, shaking his head and letting out a chuckle. “Well it’s about damn time.”

Kevin pushes away from his desk, crossing the bullpen before he’s pulling Kim into a tight, beer hug. “Congratulations, girl. Seriously.”

“Thanks, Kev,” she responds when they pull back.

Kevin turns to Adam then, clapping a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t mess it up this time man.”

Adam just shakes his head. “Trust me, man… I know what it’s like to let this one go, I’m not going to do it again.”

Footsteps on the stairs have the three of them turning their heads, seeing Voight stepping into the bullpen, and Hailey on the landing behind him, slowly coming up the stairs but keeping a wide berth.

“We got a case,” Voight huffs as he stalks across the bullpen and Kim knows that the happiness bubble has burst and they’ve got a job to do.
