Chapter 1: Waiting Room

Chapter Text

"It's strange what desire will make foolish people do"

So much has happened in these last 3 days. So much bullshit. How could she wrap her head around it all? How could she just pack up and head out to Santa Barbra? Abby just had to get through it, like she always has. At Least she has Lev. They were two runaways trying to escape the world that had let them down. The walk back from the theater was hell. The tension between the WLF and Seraphites were at its peak and the battles were just beginning. They barely had any ammo. Two bullets and a few arrows to take out the infected that were starting to come out of the shadows. Abby and Lev were going to make it back. They had to get to Owen's boat and find the Fireflies. If not for themselves, for the ones they had lost. .

By the time they had made it back to the aquarium the sun had already settled in the sky. Their soaked clothes finally dried from the night before. The blood crusting over their skin. Abby heard a slight rustling deep inside. "Nobody should be here." She whispered to Lev. The young boy took his last arrow, preparing his bow. "we've got this Abby.." He whispered back, looking up at Abby. She nodded, feeling slightly reassured. She took a deep breath and began walking in. As she walked down that cold dark hallway she looked down at Alice's cold, stiff body. Remembering what she walked into only a couple hours before.

Abby led the way down the hallway. She looked around the kitchen door frame to make sure nobody was hiding. Nothing but a trail of blood leading in, and then out to the makeshift operating room. Who else was here besides the bodies of Owen and Mel? her mind was making up scenarios. infected, actual zombies.. new ideas popped up every second. Abby hadn't noticed that Lev had followed the trail. "ABBY!" Lev's scream snapped Abby out of her trance, she ran into the operating room, preparing for a fight but all she saw was a bloody.. breathing.. Owen.

Abby rushed over to Owen. Dropping her weapons. "Owen??" Abby choked out, tears pouring down her face. She took the man in her arms, gently stroking his hair. Owen moved his head slightly. He was weak, he had lost a lot of blood. "I thought he was dead Abby? How .. How is he alive?" Lev spoke softly, he stared at Owen with wide eyes. Abby took a deep breath, looking back to Lev "I don't know. Get me the supplies we used for Yara." It was short and blunt, she had so much to process. Lev nodded and quickly stood up to gather the medical supplies. He ran out of the room for a second. He came back with blood covering his hands. "He had checked Mel" Abby thought painfully. To check if she was really dead. Lev began to gather the supplies, laying them out over a semi clean towel.

Abby sat with Owen, continuing to hold him. Owen looked over slightly and slowly put his hand on Abby's cheek to wipe away her tears. He opened his mouth to speak but Abby shook her head as she put her hand on his. "Shh.. It's going to be okay.. Save your strength.." Abby could not believe Owen was alive. How did he survive Ellie's attack? He may not survive the night but it's unbelievable he is breathing in her arms. She didn't even think to check his pulse when she had arrived from the island. So much blood had already been lost she never imagined someone could survive through that.

Lev kneeled down when he was done gathering everything. "What do we do?" He looked up at Abby, his eyes wide from fear. Abby gently laid Owen on his back. She removed his shirt and winced at the soaked T-shirt that was over his gunshot wound. She had to conjure the knowledge her father taught her. She hated this part of survival. Abby could handle the combat, the killing, but the medical part always made her feel nauseous. Maybe it was seeing people she cared about in pain, or the blood but in this moment she had to toughen up or else Owen would actually be dead.
