Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

𝙏𝙚𝙙𝙙𝙮

The first time that I saw Kian, I knew that I would love him until the day I died. Knowing Kian, the first thing he thought when he saw me was “how can I make him mine? Mine so that he’d die for me?” That was unnecessary. I would’ve died for him the moment he said my name. It wasn’t mine until he said it.

Some people would say Kian is a sociopath. Maybe if I’d met him any other way I would’ve thought the same. But watching him slam his fist into them until all the bones in his hand were shattered was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. When he held out his broken hand to help me up it was a testament to his humanity. Kian is not a sociopath. He has loved me more than anyone else has. More than anyone ever will.

He lets me know he loves me every time he calls me Teddy. He lets me know he loves me every time he grins at me when I fight someone and win. He lets me know he loves me every time he patches me up when I fight someone and lose. He lets me know he loves me every time he hands me a glass of water when I’m crying. “You can’t cry when you drink,” he says every time.

Kian may not be mine, but I am his. And I wouldn’t change that if I could.

The first time I saw Teddy, he was getting jumped in broad daylight in the middle of a mostly empty street. The cars that did drive past just circled around them. I wasn’t surprised. The country really had gone to shit.

I stepped in only for the excuse to break my hand on someone’s face. I hadn’t been a part of a good fight in a while. And it didn’t turn out to be a good fight, but it was something. Comparable to a breath of fresh air to someone who hasn’t been out in the sun for a while.

I helped Teddy up as an afterthought.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Theodore,” he said. When I didn’t look surprised, he did. It made sense. He was obviously trans. His girly voice was a dead giveaway. But I wasn’t going to mention it. I like shocking people.

“C’mon Teddy,” I said, turning and walking down the street. He followed me. I didn’t even have to look back to know. I grinned to myself.
Got him.
