Oh, to Be a Hydro Slime!

Summary:

A little ficlet about the Hydro Slime which appears in the opening tutorial.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

On occasion, elements condense to form life — perhaps not sentient in the way humans and other higher-level lifeforms are, but life nonetheless. And on this bright, sunny, beautiful day, such a lifeform spawned on a nondescript, peaceful Mondstadt beach.

Oh, to be a humble Hydro Slime, born from the pure, blue waters! Soft and gelatinous, with an adorably squishy, cuddly-looking body — those large, unassuming round eyes! Though small in size now, perhaps it could one day absorb enough elemental energy to grow into a greater, mightier stature…

This newborn Hydro Slime had hardly just bounced off the sandy beach when — THWACK! A sharp blade slammed into its soft mass. Luckily for the slime, it had no pain receptors, so the attack didn’t hurt. Unluckily, its assailant wasn’t done. Again and again, the figure hacked and slashed at the unfortunate target, until all that was left was an unmoving pile of Slime Condensate.

As the person wiped their blade clean, their companion flitted over. “You know, don’t slimes look pretty tasty? Let Paimon have a bite!”

She received a crinkle of their nose in response. “…You can eat it on your own.”

Notes:

I've been in a writing rut for Solid Foundations — I know what the plot will be, the problem is getting there in words — so I asked some of my fellow Genshin fans to send me short, non-AU and non-ship fic prompts to get some writing juices going.

The prompt for this one was "Write about the lives of the three Hydro Slimes on starter beach up until the Traveler kills them,” but when consulting a gameplay video of Wanderer's Trail, only one Hydro Slime appeared while heading towards the first Teleport Waypoint, so I focused on that one instead.
