“I just don’t get it.” Torrance says while she flips through another page of the magazine in her hands. “Like, why are guys into this?”
“Why are guys into looking at hot naked chicks?” Missy asks from her position on the carpet, right at Torrance’ feet.
“They’re not naked though.” Torrance argues. Another page, another blonde woman smiling at the camera. Why would anyone spend money on something advertisers would throw at you for free?
“But still hot,” Missy shoots back without missing a beat. “And, let’s be real, a bikini doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Not much more than our uniforms either, and you know how many dudes-”
“Gross.” Torrance interrupts her, because she really doesn’t know, but she can guess and she would really prefer not having to think about it.
Missy shrugs, in that unfairly, effortlessly cool way she does so many things, and goes back to flicking through her own magazine – featuring less hot swimsuit models and more stills from an upcoming Blumhouse movie – Night of the Zombeaver Massacre or The Electric-Knife-Killer or Undead Stage Moms or something.
When Torrance had asked her about her sudden interest in Punk and Horror zines upon first spotting the stack of them by her bed, she’d been informed that those actually belonged to her brother, but she confiscated them (without his knowledge) because he ‘is an ass and deserves it’.
She wonders if Missy calling Cliff an ass is due to anything he did to her specifically, or if it is because of his behavior this morning, when he got up and left the second he saw Torrance approaching their table during lunch, leaving Missy to glare at his retreating form while Torrance acted like she didn’t care that the first boy she’d genuinely clicked with since the messy end of her last relationship didn’t want her at all if he could not have her as a girlfriend.
So, yeah. Ass .
Although stealing his most valued possessions – and what counted as is porn stash, apparently – sure is a way to get back at him. Like, she’ll say this with nothing but love in her heart, but sometimes Missy is so weird.
Not that Torrance would have her any other way.
And, also, she’s sitting here, om Missy’s bed, flipping through what might be one of her brothers porn mags, so, yeah, not really much high ground on the weirdness there. With a scoff, she flips the magazine shut and tosses it back onto the stack.
“Not impressed?” Missy asks without looking up.
“Eh, I’ve seen better.”
Now Missy does look up. Torrance smiles.
Sometimes she doesn’t know herself, just what it is she wants from Missy, besides her continued presence in her life, what it is she keeps asking for without actually asking. She thinks she’ll know it when she sees it but for now she simply doesn’t know. An admittance, maybe? That Missy feels this, too? A confession of some kind?
‘Yeah, Courtney and Whitney weren’t totally off track with their comments, sometimes I kiss girls.’
Or, ‘Yes, I keep flirting with you and cheering you up because I have a huge gay crush on you, so please forget my brother exists and live happily ever after with me instead’?
Yup, big chance of that happening.
To be fair, she would say something first, if she had the slightest idea as to what. So, limbo it is. For now, at least.
And then Missy smiles as well, before she says, “Oh, yeah, me too.” Throwing in an exaggerated wink for good measure. And Torrance laughs and it doesn’t really matter if Cliff keeps being an ass or what this thing between them is and how they will figure it out, because this is great, too.
Just being here and being together and feeling certain that whatever comes next, they’ll be there together still.
