Work Header

cheek to cheek

Summary:

an extremely fluffy one shot about tim singing at hawk’s behest

written for the fellow travelers valentine’s month event

Notes:

hello! this is a very quickly written fic after midnight of our favourite boys being happy in love. this is so damn fluffy i could taste the sugar in my mouth after finishing it

i didnt realise at the time of writing but it addresses two prompts instead of one as initially planned - slow dancing and ‘sing for me’

not beta read and this could be written a hundred times better, but it’s literally 4 am rn so all mistakes are mine (and there plenty of them im sure) and my propensity to write when im tired after midnight

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“You know…,” Hawk began, and Tim raised his head from where it rested on Hawk’s chest to look at him.

“Yes?” he raised his eyebrows and waited for Hawk to continue. Hawk cupped Tim’s cheek and caressed the smooth skin with his thumb and instinctively, Tim leaned into the touch.

They were still in their post coital haze, content to be wrapped up in each other in a world of their own. There seemed to be more and more of these moments lately, and they to lasted longer too, Tim realised.

He wasn’t complaining though, not in the slightest.

Propping himself up on his elbow, he ran his fingers gently over Hawk’s chest and neck, before resting them right below his bottom lip.

“Hawk…,” he began. “What were you gonna say?”

Hawk playfully nipped at the finger on his lip, making Tim giggle, before bringing him closer. He buried his face in Tim’s neck, dropping a series of wet kisses, and making him moan. However, Tim knew that Hawk was trying to deflect - a habit of his that Tim knew all too well.

“Hawk! Tell me!” He pushed at Hawk’s chest, making him lie on his back before straddling him and pinning his arms next to his head.

“Well, well…” Hawk said in a low voice. “Ready to go again so soon, Skippy?”

“Uh-huh. You aren’t getting anything until you tell me what you were gonna say earlier.”

Hawk sighed and shook his head, a fond smile on his face. “Well, if you must know, I was… thinking about something you did a few weeks ago.”

Tim frowned. “Something I did? Something bad?”

“No, no. nothing bad. It was uh… it was during the trip we took.”

Tim loosened his grip on Hawk’s wrists and sat up straight. It was true that Hawk wasn’t the best at sharing things about himself, though he had been opening up increasingly more to him lately - a change Tim welcomed whole heartedly. But it was one thing to see Hawk reticent and another to see him nervous.

“Hmm…” Tim tangled his fingers in Hawk’s curls and leaned forward to kiss him softly. “What about that trip?” He asked, pressing kisses to Hawk’s face and neck to calm his nerves.

“Nothing, just… do you remember the dinner we ate? At the restaurant?”

“Hmm yeah, I do.” Tim couldn’t forget a moment of that evening, even though he had been slightly inebriated. “Don’t think it was a dinner though. We didn’t even get to eat before I channelled my inner Doris Day and embarrassed both of us-”

“Stop it, you didn’t embarrass anyone,” Hawk said, looking straight into Tim’s eyes and giving him a look that left no room for argument. “No matter what I said later that night, you did not embarrass me or yourself.”

And Tim’s heart swelled with love for the man lying below him - that impossible, infuriating, tortured and beautiful man who was so sure of everything, so meticulous and strong and brave.

But Tim knew that beneath the armour that Hawk wore, he was still a man who had faced suffering like everyone else, had been shot at too many times - after all, that was why he was sure that he was bulletproof.

“Okay then,” Tim sighed. “I did not embarrass you. But then, why are you taking so long to tell me what is on your mind?”

Hawk continued looking into Tim’s eyes and shook his head. “You are right, it’s not a big deal.” He took a deep breath before continuing. “On that night, at the restaurant - you sang for that couple.”

Tim shifted and moved off of Hawk so he was back to lying on his side, resting his weight on his elbow.

“Yes… what about it?”

“Well… it was the first time I heard you sing. And it was beautiful.”

An involuntary laugh escaped Tim’s mouth as he blushed. Hawk often gave him compliments - outside of sexual praise too - but this was different. Hawk seemed flustered, and Tim sensed he wasn’t quite finished.

“I am not too sure about beautiful - as you very well remember, I was quite drunk.”

“Yes, but still. You have a beautiful voice, Skippy. And I was wondering if… if you could sing for me sometime…”

And there it was. A simple request as that had left Hawk shy and blushing, and Tim didn’t quite understand why. But Hawk clearly thought it wasn’t an insignificant request - and Tim was not about to embarrass him more and say as such.

Nevertheless, it was downright adorable to witness, and if there was any doubt (which there wasn’t) that Tim was madly in love with him, it was dispelled right then and there.

“Well… thank you for your praise. I am sure I didn’t sound as lovely as you think I did, but I accept it nonetheless. And of course, I would love to sing for you.”

I would do anything for you, you only need to ask.

Hawk smiled widely at Tim’s response, and pressed a hard kiss to his mouth. “Thank you, Skippy. I was afraid of asking you-”

“But why? You know you can ask me anything, don’t you?”

Hawk cupped Tim’s jaw and looked at him for a long moment - stared into his eyes, making Tim blush. There was something different about Hawk that night - this… nervousness was almost uncharacteristic of him.

“Hawk?” Tim enquired carefully.

“Yes, Skippy. I know I can ask you and trust you with anything. But that doesn’t mean I want you to do something you don’t like or want to do. That is why I was a bit… apprehensive. That’s all.”

“Well, you don’t need to be. You are looking at the former choir boy at St Joseph’s Church and let me tell you, I do think I was the best out of the lot.” Tim pecked Hawk’s chest and laid his chin over his heart.

“Were you, now?”

“Hmm, yes I was. In fact…,” Tim’s eyes widened and he smiled mischievously, standing up from the bed and outstretching his arm. “Everyone said I was a great dancer too.”

Hawk laughed. “Did they now?”

“Yes, they did. And now…” he grabbed Hawk’s hand and pulled him to his feet next to their bed, “let me give you some proof of my skills.”

“Skippy, we’re naked,” Hawk said but grabbed Tim’s waist as they swayed lightly.

“And? I can still sing while naked, we can still dance while naked.”

“Hmm, and what you gonna sing for me?”

Tim bit his lower lip, a sudden nervousness clouding his mind but he pushed it aside and began.

Heaven, I'm in heaven,
Heaven, I'm in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak…
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together, dancing cheek to cheek…

Hawk pressed a light kiss to Tim’s lips and leaned back to look into his eyes, smiling softly. Tim placed both his arms around Hawk’s shoulders and locked his hands behind his neck while Hawk lightly held his waist with both his hands.

Grinning, Tim started swaying himself and Hawk in short and quick movements in tandem with the rhythm of the tune.

Heaven, I'm in heaven,
And the cares that hung around me through the week…
Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak
When we're out together, dancing cheek to cheek….

Hawk smiled broadly at Tim who mirrored his expression. Then he grabbed Hawk’s right arm and twirled himself, holding it over his head. Hawk caught on quickly and pulled Tim’s back to his chest, holding both their right arms around Tim’s stomach, and started swaying again.

Oh, I love to climb a mountain
And to reach the highest peak
But it doesn't thrill me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh, I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek
But I don't enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Tim turned back in Hawk’s arms to face him and kissed his cheek gently, before pressing his face against Hawk.

Dance with me! I want my arms about you, he sang softly, their bodies wrapped around each other in a safe, warm cocoon.

The charms about you
Will carry me through to?

Hawk cupped Tim’s face and rested his forehead against his.

Heaven, I'm in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak…
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together, dancing cheek to cheek

Tim finished the song and sighed, pulling back slightly and looking at Hawk. He was eager to know what Hawk thought of his little performance but before he could ask, Hawk spoke up.

“That was… so beautiful Tim, thank you,” Hawk sounded strangely emotional though like always, he tried to hide it. But his slightly misty eyes betrayed him.

“Hawk… are you sure you liked it?”

“Skippy, yes of course, I loved it, I love-” he stopped and Tim all but ceased breathing.

“I love- I love your voice, Skippy,” Hawk finally said, and even though Tim knew he wouldn’t hear the words he so desperately wanted to hear anytime soon, it still stung.

“Thank you, Hawk,” he said softly, averting his eyes.

“And your moves, Skippy - you weren’t kidding when you said you were a dancing champion in your youth!”

It was a clear indication that Hawk wanted to change the subject, and Tim let him - he had realised very quickly that he needed to let Hawk work at his own pace and in his own time.

“Well… I didn’t exactly say a champion because I wasn’t, truly.”

“To me, you are,” Hawk pecked him on the lips and walked them backwards to their bed.

Once they were back in the position they had started in, only flipped with Hawk’s head now resting on Tim’s chest, Hawk kissed the skin under his face and looked up at him.

“No but truly, thank you for doing that for me. I really appreciate it.”

“You are welcome. And ask me anytime. Demand, even - if you want to.”

“Demand, hmm? Well, what if I demand something else on other occasions?” Hawk straddled Tim and hovered over him. “Will my boy give me whatever I demand?”

Tim let out a breathless laugh and pulled Hawk’s lips to his own.

“You need only demand… I am all yours.”
