Felix's eyes snapped open, bleary from the sudden darkness. The memories of the dream still lingered in his mind and he looked around the room for a sign of it. A sign of that glowing, one eyed almost angelic demon Null, the thing responsible for tearing his family apart almost six years ago...
He tried to get up, to turn to the left or the right yet his body wouldn’t move a single muscle, pins and needles drove into his nerves like knives. All he could do was dart his eyes about and if it weren’t for the buzzing in his chest he would’ve felt how quick his breathing actually was…
He nearly jumped at the sudden stimuli driving the pins even further into his right arm. He mentally panicked, then as his eyes settled on his ring finger that, thankfully, still had his miraculous, something else caught his attention.
The thing that caused his skin to ripple with another wave of static was Marinette, holding onto his arm as she slept, snoring sporadically in between her quiet breathing…
At the sight of her calm expression, Felix let out a breath of his own that had been trapped in his chest for god knows how long, then attempted at relaxing his fingers once he’d realized that they’d been clenched tightly this entire time…
One moved. Then another. Then, gradually, the buzzing in his limbs began to fizzle out, but his mind and heart was still racing from the nightmare that had woken him up… and, unfortunately, he couldn’t get up from bed to try and make himself a drink to ease his worries.
The culprit? His darling Spots, who still held onto his arm as if it were a third pillow…
Or.. perhaps he could, if he were careful enough…
It's worth a shot at least, right…?
He tried slipping his arm out from within her grip, melting like ice in the summer sun as Marinette groaned tiredly, nuzzling into his hand just as he released part of it.
‘I’ll be back in a minute, Spots…’ he thought, not bothering to voice it for fear that it would wake her up.
Felix tucked the corner of his blanket under Marinette’s hands, and he slowly and carefully walked to their bedroom door, he heard Marinette mumble something half consciously.
Something that made his face grow red hot as he cracked the door open.
“Mmh… Kitty…”
Oh, why was this woman so adorable when she was sleepy… he wouldn’t be able to get over it, even after they’ve been dating for years…
He tore his eyes away from her long enough to slip through the crack in the doorway, his heart thundering again as he heard it creak upon him turning to go to the kitchen. Thankfully, no steps followed him.
Felix walked back into the room two minutes later with a cup of ice water, took a sip, then sat it down on the bedside table before nestling back into the covers with a groan.
It was enough to stir Marinette awake, if only halfway, and she rubbed her eyes. “Mm… Felix?? How come you’re up…?”
He let a few shaky breaths pass his lips before he actually answered. “N-No reason, just… just a bad dream is all…”
Felix had shut his eyes again by the time he felt Marinette move closer then rest her head on his collarbone, and wrap her arms up and around his back.
What she said next, it almost made him cry…
“I’m here… it’s okay…you’re safe…we’re both safe...”
Oh… there it was again. His lungs had been freed of the constricting chains of the memory again, and he could breathe in the calm night air. He could breathe and feel and emote and let the man who haunted his new normal fade from his mind… but oh, how it hurt to have the ghost of his father’s actions torment him…
“If that one eyed gremlin ever comes back, I’ll build you a god killing fly swatter…”
“Y-You’re…” he choked out, laughing dryly a second later. “You’re too kind to me, you know that?”
Marinette reached up with her left hand and caressed Felix’s cheek. “Only because I love you, Kitty…”
“Sorry,” he apologized, his voice growing softer as the seconds ticked by. “If I woke you up earlier, I mean… I got up to get some water…”
“Don’t do that…” Marinette mumbled into his shirt, drowsiness reclaiming her as she ran her fingers into his hair, if only to pull him a bit closer than they already were. “You know I don’t mind if you have to move…”
“Mmhm… but you looked comfy before, I didn’t want to alarm you..”
Marinette looked up at him, eyes half open as she bopped his nose with her finger then went back to stroking his hair. “Don’t be silly, I’m comfy as long as you’re right here…”
“That makes two of us…”
As Marinette’s eyes closed again, Felix smiled warmly as the fear of his own mind playing tricks on him melted away in the softness of the moment. He returned her closeness, leaning into her embrace as he too began to fall asleep, his steady breathing and her heartbeat serving as a lullaby for the rest of the night…
And, as an added bonus, Felix’s second dream was of something much like how he felt: Safe, comforted, and in the arms of his partner, Marinette…
