They’re always watching me, the hounds of hell that they are!

It’s very late in the night and I’m trying so hard to sleep.

But the soft breathing right next to my ear is disturbing at best. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not scared or anything like that. Never really was the scary cat type, being more of a dog person and all. Alas, it’s gotten to the point of annoying now. As they are always there! The three of them, observing, checking, watching me.

As if being… oh well… the hounds of hell?

Well hellish more likely. Little hell raisers perhaps. Not so evil?

I do love ‘em all, the three of them. They’re my best pals. The ones I’ve adopted as pups from the shelter. I know they love me too in their own way. At least during feeding and petting times. But, yeah, they’re happy with me. And I am happy with them. I just wish sometimes, I could have a full night’s sleep without their constant shenanigans. As you see, they nap during the day while I work! Little bastards!!!

And, if I won’t wake up while they sit there, staring at me while I sleep as if willing me to do so. To wake up. Well, that’s where all hell breaks loose. Literally! It’s when the howling starts. The caterwauling more likely. Anything to get my attention. The vet told me it was just a phase. A pup phase. Until they would get used to me and this new place. But I suspect it’s more than that. It’s in their nature, somehow. To be, well, different. Night howlers, werewolves?!? And it’s not even full moon yet!

And so, as I pretend to sleep once again. But I can feel their breathing near me. Their eyes on me. The soft panting… I know I should not do it, but I cannot help myself. And so, I get up, sit there on the edge of the bed and stare right back at them. As our faces are on the level I see it. The perfect smiles on their faces. Because they know. The three of them having me wrapped around their little paws for sure.

But I cannot help myself. I love my wee doggos. That’s why I adopted them in the first place. The three totally winning my heart since the very first licks on my face. And so here we all are. It’s the middle of the night and I am about to give in.

My hand reaching under my pillow. It’s the place where I keep the spares. Just in case the others are somehow lost or misplaced. It’s happened a lot. Stuff going missing. Only to be found at some later point buried in the back yard, torn and half eaten.

I find them, three of them. Soft and squishy. Just the way they like ‘em.

“Fellas, are you ready?”

They’re eyes are on mine, their stances set, the three ready to pounce.

“On three then.” I chuckle.

As per taught, they know what it means. The counting that is. Their tails wagging in anticipation. Their long tongues hanging out, drooling all over the floors. Yeah, that too happens.

“One… two… three!!!”

The balls are on their trajectory as I’ve swung my arm, sending all of the three fluffy balls flying at the same time.

The three of them, Fives, Jesse and Hardcase pounce around, catching them in midair. Yeah. They’re that good. And then bringing them to me to do it all over again.

I know it’s in the middle of the night and I should be sleeping. But. I cannot help it. They are adorable with their toys, catching them with precision. Well, most of the time. And when the fun time is over, we all cuddle on the bed. Thankfully a kingsize one for me, as the doggos sure take a lot of space!
