Work Text:

Gather 'round and hear me sailor's tale of the Sea of Thieves!

The tale begins on a calm-watered, moonlit night. 'Twas just me, me sloop, and a pirate treasure map. The map told of vast riches hidden somewhere on the eruptin' volcanic island, the Ashen Ridge. I had set out earlier in the morn', and after a long route, I had finally arrived at me destination.

After a wee bit of explorin' the island, I dug up the treasure chest. I lifted it up and headed back to me ship, but when I got to her, I was greeted with a terrible sight. Me ship was screamin' in agony from the roaring inferno that had engulfed her! Stood to me reasonin' that the debris spewin' out the volcano had licked me ship aflame. I had to escape fast.

I hulled me loot onto me ship and dropped the sail. Me ship caught wind, and the Ashen Ridge faded into the distance. All the while, I was puttin' out fires and scoopin' out sea water. But me tale had only just begun, for while I was makin' repairs to me ship's inner hull, a great cannonball explosion shook me vessel!

A sloop of skeleton pirates peeked out above the waves. I manned me cannon, and I traded fire with the skeletons. I knew that if I kept me wits, I'd stand a good chance of sinkin' them before they sunk me. But... The sea be as dangerous and unpredictable as can be, for out the corner of me good eye, I spotted a massive shark fin tearin’ through the water.

With brutal aggression, the skeleton pirates turned their vessel, picked up speed, and rammed into me. I took out me sabre and leaped onto their ship. Many a skeleton was slayed that night. I sabotaged their ship, and it began to sink. But then, I heard a deafenin' crunch! I was so distracted tryin' to sink the skeleton's ship, that I had forgotten about the massive shark. The shark had taken a vicious bite from me ship's hull, causing her to sink.

The shark, satisfied with sinking me ship, swam away. All that remained was me, stranded out at sea. 'Twas some fortune that me ship's lifeboat hadn't sunk along with it. And low-and-behold, me treasure chest showed itself to be buoyant! I threw me-self and the loot onto the lifeboat, and rowed me-self to the nearest deserted island. Hopeless situation it was, but you might recall me sayin’ earlier that the sea be dangerous and unpredictable. That be true, but that be true for all sailors, for I saw another player pirate’s ship anchored near the island, no doubt that its crew was off explorin’ the island on foot. I was goin' to steal their ship.

With as much stealth that a pirate can muster, I rowed to the other players’ ship. A big galleon ship, it was! Easily could hold four player pirates. I knew that I had to be quick, before their crew got back. But, as I boarded the ship, I heard a gunshot, and a bullet whizzed passed me.

I looked around for the shooters, but all I saw was a single other pirate. The pirate spoke using the in-game voice chat. The voice took me by surprise; it was the voice of a young teenaged boy.

“Come on, bro. Don’t. I just finished my voyage, and I need to turn in my treasure. We don’t need to fight.”

After me ordeal with the volcano, and the skeletons, and the shark, I wasn’t feelin’ much like fightin’ neither. I took out me banjo and played a tune, to show him that I wasn’t rarin’ for a fight. He boarded his ship alongside me, a wee bit curious as to where me own vessel was. I wasn’t usin’ the in-game voice chat, so I imagine his impression o’ me was a small bit mysterious. I showed him me treasure chest on me rowboat, and he pieced together that I was a lone pirate who had escaped me sunk ship with just a single chest of loot. He kindly offered to ferry me back to an occupied island.

During our travel, I played the banjo. Sometimes, he would ask me questions, to which I’d reply by nodding or shaking me head. The shark that had sunk me ship before appeared again, ready for round two, but me and the captain fended it off easily together. We finally arrived at an island. I was so happy to set foot on solid ground, that I gave me rescuer the chest of loot. He said he didn’t need it, but I gave it to him anyway, as an expression of gratitude.

And thus ends me sailor’s tale of the Sea of Thieves!

Notes:

This story actually happened to me when I was sailing a sloop solo in Sea of Thieves. I was so happy about the fun player-with-player interaction at the end that I wanted to write a story about it.

All feedback is welcome. Want to say that you liked my story? I'd appreciate that. Want to say that my story sucked? That'd also be welcome, but let me know why. Have questions? Ask away.
