Work Text:
After so many years of animosity, when a brother comes to them asking them to take someone on a date as a matter of national security, Morgan didn’t really know what to think. Or what to do.
And yet, here they were, walking hand in hand down a beach, snipers posted on the rooftops and a wire strapped to their chest. On a date...
Of course, Morgan had heard of Alex. A terrifying and somewhat unpredictable villain who had enough power to kill God, or possibly be God...
Tonight, however, they had been rather pleasant. Occasionally odd, not that Morgan minded very much.
Odd was comfortingly human, which confirmed that Alex was, however much it had been debated, human.
Morgan remembered what Chad has said, “Just keep them happy and try to get the location of the bomb. I have no idea how they know who you are and no idea what they might do but it is a risk I am willing to take.” A risk he was willing to take without any regard for Morgan’s safety. As usual.
Water lapped at Morgan’s bare feet, the dark water reflecting the starry night. It pulled them back into the moment. This moment. On a date with someone so powerful they had Chad begging for Morgan’s help. That was a different kind of power all together.
The wind was cool, but Morgan themself didn’t feel the effects of it. They suspected Alex had something to do with that. Their gold eyes flashing occasionally as unnecessarily romantic things occurred. From birds flying perfectly over head or a shooting star at the right moment to emphasize a point
Morgan sighed, “Tonight has been... Perfect really...” They settled on, breaking the silence which had been building for some time. It truly had. As if plucked directly from some cheesy fiction book.
It had started with dinner, where Alex had talked to Morgan and listened. Seemingly genuinely interested in their hobbies and failing miserably to answer riddles which made them both laugh.
“I am glad you feel that way. I have had a lot of fun as well.” Alex smiled. Morgan had learned tonight that when Alex smiled it was a smile that chilled someone to the bone but also manged to flush their cheeks all at once.
It was a dizzying sensation.
“Look, I gotta ask something.” Morgan stopped walking, knowing full well the trees in this spot were blocking any shot the snipers had.
“Morgan, stay on mission.” Chad’s voice buzzed in Morgan’s ear.
They ripped the earpiece out, reaching down their shirt and pulling the mic out as well and tossing it into the water.
Alex just watched, a smile on their lips as those golden eyes followed every action.
“Why did you ask for a date?” Morgan asked finally, their own eyes locked into Alex’s, looking not just at them, but into them. Morgan was aware that their question should have been about the location of the bomb, but they wanted to know what Alex’s game was before they enjoyed their company any more than necessary. As well as the fact it wasn’t Morgan’s job to save the city, that was Chad’s and given the opportunity Morgan would plant a bomb. Obviously, their bomb would be at the centre of a complex puzzle and be deactivated in the nick of time, but that was beside the point.
“In all honesty, I simply wanted to know if they would be so desperate as to allow it. They almost had me, but something tells me, you are not as on their side as they would like.” That smile of Alex’s widened with delight.
Morgan shook their head, “D Tier Villain. I know that must be a joke to someone as strong as you but, it is what it is.”
“How interesting. How is it to have a hero for a brother?”
“Annoying, always being asked to do dangerous shit like this and then being berated at family dinners.” Morgan would have clenched their fist, but Alex still had a gentle hold of their hand and was calmly running their thumb over Morgan’s knuckles.
“Why did you say yes?” Alex asked, trying to wrap their head around this little villain, who had genuinely been exceptionally good company all night.
Morgan shrugged, “Wasn’t given a choice.” Which was the truth, but there had been some professional curiosity as well.
“Well, given the choice, would you like to go out with me again?” Alex asked and instantly Morgan felt their entire body light up.
Hot, flustered and suddenly extremely glad they’d ridden themself of the microphone as they didn’t believe their response in all honesty, “Yeah, that’d be great.” Morgan hoped it came off more cool and collected than they felt.
Once again, Alex’s smile widened and seemed to light up the entire beach, or perhaps that was the helicopter which was now approaching. It’s search light illuminating the pair’s footprints and was about to be right on top of them.
“I am very glad to hear it.” Alex lifted Morgan’s hand to their lips, pressing a kiss to the back of their hand before letting go, “Until our next date.”
With that Alex snapped their fingers and disappeared, at the same time, the helicopter began a frenzied spiral into the water with a splash which washed small broken metal scraps onto the beach. When these scraps came to rest, they formed a heart and Morgan smiled. They imagined the golden flash of Alex’s eyes. Another small act by design.
The moment was ruined however as Chad flew in and shouted.
“Morgan! What the hell happened?” He was pissed, sure, but Morgan couldn’t help but be a little grateful. After all, if it wasn’t for their brother risking their life, Morgan wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet Alex.
“We’re planning a second date.” They said as they started to walk home, a small spring in their step.
“What the... what the hell? What about the bomb?” Chad screamed after his sibling.
Somewhere in the distance an explosion shot out of the darkness, Morgan would later come to find out this was a statue of Chad.
“Why’d you trust a villain to help you catch another?” Morgan shouted back.
This defiantly beat the conventional way of dating for sure.
