Work Text:
It was another one of those usual noisy scholar breaks.
Each table had its daily chaos, with its gossip, lamentations and jokes, the normal routine of another day in the life of a teenager.
In one group, Rarity was talking excitedly about the literature class she had with Fluttershy last period.
- We studied about such a romantic author!! - She exclaimed, giving a passionate sigh. - The teacher asked us what our favorite romance scene was and that we would like to happen to us. So it's my obligation to ask you, what would it be?
- I think it must be amazing to kiss in the rain! - Pinkie says, with a big smile. - It's very dramatic and messy.
- That would ruin your makeup, honey.
- And there is a strong chance of catching a cold. You better not do that, Pinkie. - Twilight recommended, looking at the girl with concern.
The pink-haired one was discouraged.
- But it's only once. - She argued, looking at the two who had refused, as if they could prevent something she was willing to do.
Rarity was going to deny it again, but she couldn't bear the pleading eyes.
She sighed, heavily.
- What's the point of being a little messy if it's your moment of happiness, right?
Twilight no longer had the same reaction.
- I still think it's better not to do it. There is a strong chance that you will catch a cold, which you thought would be mild, but in reality you would spend the entire next day sneezing while reading your old books and being made a laughing stock by your romantic partner, as she had not had a cold and only you had this bad luck. - She argued, with an irritated air.
They all looked at her because of her highly specific hypothesis.
Sunset couldn't help herself and had to laugh at Sci-Twi.
- Why do you laugh every time?? - She exclaimed, embarrassed and indignant.
- Because you insist on remembering every time.
- Established couples are beautiful, but they make me jealous, let's move on to the next answer.
- Hey! You won't shut me up. I think kisses in the library are super romantic. - Sunset says, looking sideways at Twilight.
From the look on the face of the studant, they had already done this before.
- I agree with Pinkie. I think a romantic moment in the rain or in contact with nature should be perfect. - Fluttershy commented, shrinking in her seat, with a soft smile.
- I already think that a romantic moment in my studio must be incredible! Intimacy in a place where I belong. It would be a lovely and private moment for both of us. - She says, dreaming, her eyes shining.
- You take everyone to your studio. - Sunset says, rolling her eyes.
- But I don't kiss everyone! I'm waiting for someone special! - She justified herself, crossing her arms.
- And you, Applejack? Any specific dream? - Sunset asks, drinking more of her juice.
The blonde was thoughtful, imagining situations she might like.
She smiled slightly, adjusting her hat.
- I think that with the right person, any situation would make me feel butterflies in my stomach. - She admitted, sincerely, thinking about someone specific.
- Wont! Are you in love, Applejack? - Pinkie asked, jumping excitedly.
The blonde would quickly disagree with her friend, when the one who hadn't yet spoken let out a sarcastic laugh.
- No offense, girls, but this is a silly teenager thing. I don't know how you like to think about this kind of thing. - She admitted, smiling confidently because she was the only one there who didn't think that way.
- Romance, Dash. Have you ever imagined yourself in a romantic situation with someone you like? - Rarity questioned, with a skeptical look.
- Of course not. People like me, I don't have to like them back. Romance is for stupid people. - She replied, feeling great.
Twilight rolled her eyes, determined to expose her friend.
- So why do you steal lesbian romance books from the library to read when you're skipping class? - She ask, crossing her arms.
The colorful girl's eyes widened, her heart beating in panic.
How the fuck did Twilight know that?? Wasn't she always focused in class??
- I don't know if you know, Dash, but I take care of the library's security cameras on Tuesdays and Thursdays. - She explained, seeming to read her thoughts, smiling cynically.
- That's a mistake, dude! I only pick up those books because they're by the same author as Daring Doo, so I'd like to see his other works, since I'm a fan! - She explained, nervou.
The school bell rang, much to Dash's relief.
- Alright, we get it, miss "I don't like romance, because I'm too cool for that." You don't need to justify yourself. - Applejack teased, getting up from her chair to return to the classroom.
Pinkie laughed at her words and Fluttershy smiled restrainedly too.
Sunset whispered something in Twilight's ear, who smiled and whispered back.
Rarity looked mockingly at Rainbow Dash.
- You should think about it a little, if you already know so many romantic scenes. - She commented, smiling sideways, evaluating the length of one of her nails. - You'll be surprised by how much you'll like it.
Rainbow returned to the classroom, distraught and angry.
She didn't want to think about that silly girl nonsense, but it became an impossible task as it now crossed her mind.
She remembered all the scenes she read, with so much effort and attention, and the smiles she opened, even if she wanted to hide it, when something that shook her heart happened in the book.
Every time she read something like an exchange of glances or an admiring smile, she bit her lip excitedly, waiting to see what the couple's development would be.
Rainbow obviously wasn't telling anyone this and no one should have known, if it weren't for Twilight simply ratting her out.
She was always so careful, dammit!
She only read that type of book behind the bleachers on the soccer field, because she knew that during class time, no one would be around.
That made something clear in her mind, snapping suddenly.
Rainbow picked up the pencil she was twirling with her fingers and wrote something on the edge of her school book.
"Soccer field"
Come to think of it, that would be an incredible scene.
All the lights on, directed towards the field, she and another girl in the center of the lights and attention, if there was anyone there, but they would be alone with only their feelings as a witness and passionate looks at each other.
They would be very close to each other, happy for the company they were in love with and smiling like fools at every action the other did.
As a consequence of the strong attraction, the two would approach each other slowly, until they could feel the lips and the hot breath coming from the other's mouth and then...
Your heart would tremble when your lips came together, forming a passionate and desire-filled bond that would make your hearts beat with equal intensity, equal feeling.
They would walk away and...
- Rainbow Dash!! - The teacher shouted, making her wake up from her thoughts, her pencil falling from her hand.
She looked desperately at the book, imagining that she had written everything she had imagined, but only the first two words remained, "soccer field".
Relieved, she looked up to find Applejack watching her.
- Are you communicating through your eyes? You've been looking at Applejack for the last two minutes! - The teacher exclaimed, frustrated.
- Sorry teacher. - Rainbow asked, looking for the page that Cheerilee was teaching.
After the focus left her, she became panicked.
Why was she looking at Applejack anyway?
That might sound really strange, considering the kind of thoughts she was having.
But then, she realized.
It's right! Applejack is her best friend, she could tell her what she wouldn't tell the others.
Sometimes Applejack also thought some things the girls said were rubbish, but she just tried to hide it so as not to "ruin" her cool side.
The blonde was the one who understood her the most.
So Rainbow made up her mind: she was going to tell Applejack about what she had just discovered.
As soon as classes ended, she ran to the exit door, waiting for Applejack to appear.
As soon as her friend came through the door, she approached her.
- What's up? Anything to do tonight? - She asked, looking expectantly at the blonde, who thought for a moment.
- No. But this afternoon I need to resolve some things with a farm dealer. - She explained, looking at her curiously. - Why?
- Can we meet here at school at 6? - She asked, before she could regretted it.
Applejack narrowed her eyes.
- You don't have absurd ideas of invading the school looking for test answers again, do you? - She asked carefully.
- Of course not! - She sighed, frustrated. - And I only did it once because I was desperate to pass the final exam in seventh grade.
- You were suggesting doing this last week, with the math test. - Applejack reminded her, with a mocking smile.
Rainbow contorted her face in agony.
- Are you coming or not?
- I'll come, of course. I have to be the rational side by your side. - She bumped her own shoulder against Dash's, before saying goodbye.
- She's fucking annoying. - Dash murmurs, smiling when she sees her leaving.
She would have training now, so she could wait for her friend after everything was over, at 5.
She won several games, as always, and acted as always, even if she was a little distracted by what she had agreed with Applejack.
Why did she want to tell her, anyway?
There was no reason to say something as silly as that.
But it had already been done, so there was no going back.
Besides, of course there was a reason! She thought, as she kicked another ball into the goal, alone on the field, after training was over.
She had called Applejack so they could see what the romantic situation she imagined she would like would be like.
....
That sounded even weirder.
Due to her mental confusion, she didn't hit the goal she was going to score.
- Argh! - She mumbled to the entire field.
- Seeing you not score a goal was the most surprising thing I've seen in a while. - A voice came from behind her and she turned around, scared.
Applejack approached her, a soft smile on her face.
- Are you kidding me? - She muttered, irritated.
She looked at the sky, seeing that it was about to set.
- Did it finish early? - Asked, removing the sweaty hair stuck to her forehead, throwing it back.
- Yes. Can you believe he wanted to buy my apples at half price?
Rainbow smirked, sure of what Applejack had done.
- You managed to scare him, I swear.
Applejack smiled mischievously.
- You know I have to defend my farm at all times. - She showed her own clenched fist and Rainbow looked at it a little longer than she should have.
She let out a brief laugh, turning to her balls once again.
- You really have to defend your farm. I need my cider monthly.
- Oh, I know that well. Last time I didn't bring it, you didn't talk to me for a whole day.
- It was still a short time. You know I can never buy from the school machine, these vultures take everything! - She exclaimed, indignant at the lack of respect from the other students.
- You'd take them all if you could, Rainbow. You are not innocent. - The blonde teased, also getting closer to the balls.
- I can. They do not. - She shrugged, indifferently.
- But then, what did you want to do here at this time? - She asked, kicking one of the balls hard that hit the net, shaking it.
- Do you remember what we were talking about this morning at break? - She did a few dunks with the ball on her knee, without looking at Applejack.
- About arctic penguins eating French fries? I told you, Dash, don't believe everything Pinkie Pie tells you. - She replied, worried about her naivety.
Due to the random topic, Rainbow was unable to continue her mental count and held the ball in her hands to look indignantly at Applejack.
- Of course not! And I know the story about the penguins is a lie, but last time it was really convincing, okay?? - She took a deep breath, ready to defend herself more, but realized she was getting away from the subject. - I'm talking about when the girls were talking about their favorite romantic scenes.- She murmured, suddenly embarrassed.
- Ah... And why did you want to talk to me about this? - Rainbow could hear her intrigued voice and so she took a deep breath, ready to express what she had wanted to say since early on.
- I know I said I didn't like it, but...
- We know you have a heart too, Dash. It was obvious that it was just your pride talking. - She commented, smiling, trying to see Rainbow's face, who insisted on hiding.
Rainbow rolled her eyes, why did those girls have to know her so well?
- It's just... I don't have the courage to tell them this, after all, so I decided to tell you, since I ended up thinking about it for a long time today.
- Tell me? And why was this so urgent?
- I don't know, okay? I just got excited about what I was thinking and called you without thinking too much about it. - She replied, frustrated at how her own answer didn't seem to make sense.
- And what is your favorite romantic scene like? Something like in a really high place so you could feel the emotion of being off the ground with the girl? Or after a competition in which you were euphoric about winning? - She asked herself, curious, several possibilities infiltrating her mind.
Rainbow had to smile at the blonde's words.
- Interestingly, these are great ideas. But it wasn't what I was thinking. - She explained, throwing the ball that was in her hand into the basket that was in the corner of the field.
- What would it be then?
- Here. - Dash looked around, seeing the place empty and the sky getting dark. - I found the idea of doing this here strangely attractive. Come here, let me show you. - She pulled Applejack by the hand and took them to the middle of the court. - It would be here. You know I like a little attention. - She smiled confidently, rolling her eyes. - And when I first thought about it, it seemed like the perfect situation, you know? The place, the feeling, the girl... - She looked up at Applejack who was watching her in surprise and shock.
Rainbow quickly let go of the blonde's hand she was still holding and blamed her lack of attention for embarrassing herself.
- And you wanted to show me your favorite romantic scene. - Applejack murmured, trying to understand her reasons. - For what?
For what?
Any answer that came to mind seemed stupid now.
- I don't know... - She replied, unsure if there was a right answer.
Applejack laughed, amused by something.
- You're really stupid sometimes. - She responded affectionately and Rainbow didn't know whether to consider it an insult or a compliment. - In the name of my honesty, I will need to tell our friends everything you said today. - She warned, smiling restrainedly.
Rainbow's eyes widened, indignant at her words, but she smiled in disbelief.
- You wouldn't do that... - She doubted, looking at her in doubt. She laughed in disbelief when she saw no fear in the other's expression. - I wouldn't leave my loyalty aside either, I have to maintain my principles. - They fell silent and she looked at the sky innocently. - But I don't know anything about what would appear on your farm the next morning.
- You wouldn't put frogs in my room again. - She challenged, crossing her arms.
- It wouldn't be frogs, maybe bats this time. - She shrugged.
- I would applaud your courage. Grandma Smith now keeps a baseball bat whenever she goes to bed. - She warned, smiling sideways.
Rainbow had to laugh out loud, thinking about the situation.
- I just broke into your house, what? Three times in the last month?
- She intends for the fourth to be the last. - She commented, unable to bear it and starting to laugh with the other.
- Oh, seriously, I know the Apple family loves my early morning visits.
- I can speak for myself, yes, but Grandma's grumpy look at you tells me otherwise.
Laughing so hard, Rainbow placed a hand on Applejack's arm, trying to control the pain in her stomach.
The spotlights came on suddenly, scaring them.
But as soon as she caught her breath, Rainbow smiled, looking back at Applejack.
But as soon as she did that, she felt herself frozen in time by what she saw.
Applejack looked beautiful.
Under the light of the spotlight, the immense smile, her green eyes standing out with their shine, the corners of her eyes that were watering from the good laughs just now.
Rainbow took a deep breath, trying to find the reason for such silence inside her mind, which was focused solely on Applejack at the moment.
Realizing a little too quickly, she felt like she wanted to kiss the blonde right then and there.
Your favorite romantic scene wanted to form right then and there.
It was crazy, but it seemed like the right thing to do there with Applejack.
- What it was? - Applejack asked, taking a step forward. - Are you imagining yourself with who you like? - She asked softly, turning her face to the side, her hat tilting with it.
Rainbow's heart seemed to run from one side of the field to the other, eager to score another goal that would be decisive in an important match.
She was imagining herself with Applejack. That moment.
Swallowing hard, she released the most sincere words of her entire life:
- I'm imagining myself with you. - She laughed nervously, thinking she had made a mistake, not seeing the blonde's reaction. - I must be going crazy, right? - She asked fearfully, heartlessly clenching like an idiot.
Of course she didn't like his best friend romantically.
Right?
- If so, I would be going crazy too. - Applejack admitted, looking down at the floor.
Rainbow's heart stopped abruptly, the third out-of-control reaction Applejack had caused her in less than a minute.
- What did you say?
- When I talked earlier today about any place that the person I liked would be my favorite... Well... Sports fields are my favorite now. - She confessed, looking with some fear at the athlete. She took another step closer, reaching out with one hand, stroking the side of Rainbow's face with one finger. - Would you like to perform your favorite scene with me?
The low question infiltrated her ears, but her stunned heart wouldn't let her respond, because she felt that if she opened her mouth, she would only be able to say how in love with Applejack she was at that moment.
Rainbow took another step forward, feeling her unregulated breathing mix with Applejack's.
She looked back into green eyes, seeing the blonde wait for her answer, with trepidation.
Meaningless, obviously.
Testing her own heart, Dash analyzed every detail of Applejack's face, carefully tucking a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear, certain that any wrong move would ruin the moment.
- Yes. - She could hear herself whispering. - Yes, Applejack, I want it. - She assured with confidence, looking at the other's lips.
She saw a small smile settle on the blonde's face, before she leaned forward, closing the distance between them.
Rainbow didn't know she was expecting it, but she accepted the euphoria that settled throughout her body when their lips met.
Despite being so confident, they started the kiss only moving their lips with a certain shyness, as it still didn't seem real that they could be in that way with each other.
But it felt so right. It looked so good.
It was ecstatic to know that she was like that with the blonde and, even more so, that the scene she had thought of was better than she could have imagined.
As soon as they separated, Applejack too happy to stop herself from giving one last peck before walking away, Rainbow smiled, restrained, trying to return to her usual self.
- I think... - She began, twirling a strand of the blonde's hair between her fingers. - I have a few more romantic scenes that I want to test.
Applejack smiled, knowing what her answer would be.
- Well, I want you to show me all of them.
- We have a long list ahead of us.- Dash warned, looking at her with amusement.
Applejack hugged Rainbow tight and for comfort, Dash squeezed her back.
- I won't be complaining. - She whispered in her ear.
