Work Text:
In two separate dorm rooms, two people woke up. Both of them lacked what one would regularly consider a face. They were indeed possessed of a face, but in both it was simply unable to be seen.
In one, their own subconscious utilizes their quirk to make them unseen. In the other, their face was a piece of paper, able to be changed, but never coming close to what anyone would consider human. When they ate, it seemed as if the food simply… disappeared. Unsettling, unnatural.
UA wasn’t as bad as their old schools. In fact, it was far far better. No insults to be found, but there were still some negative things. For one, a crazed quirk analyst obsessed with the mechanism food went down their throat, for the other it was not being able to mess with makeup and hairstyles like their friends.
Yet, it wasn’t horrible. They had friends, friends who would accommodate their differences. Today, however…
“Today you’ll be partnering up with one student from 1-B for a day under a hero. Any questions before I go take a nap?” Eraserhead asked. Honestly, Tooru wasn’t entirely sure how the man even got a teaching license. He was a good hero, and they owed him for holding the villains off at the USJ long enough for All Might to arrive, but he kinda… sucked at being a teacher.
“Who am I being partnered with Mr. Aizawa?” Tooru asked. Hopefully, it isn’t too disagreeable of a person. Hopefully not Monoma. She was kind of wondering if he could figure out a way to make her visible, but he was also kind of a jerk. Maybe she would get partnered up with Shishida? He was cool.
“Let’s see…” Aizawa shuffled through some papers before taking a specific sheet out. “You’ll be with… Manga Fukidashi.”
“Today, you’ll be partnered up with 1-A for a day under the tutelage of a pro hero! This will last for a week and may interfere with your schoolwork, so be sure to make it up. Extensions will be longer if they are necessary. Any questions?” Vlad King was a surprisingly good teacher for who they suspected was a vampire on the first day of school.
“1-A?! How could you do this to us, Mr King?!” Monoma shouted, apparently outraged at the prospect of having to cooperate with the ‘glory hounds’ of 1-A. Honestly, Manga was pretty sure it was all an act. A case of an insecurity complex trying to mask itself as one of superiority. Or maybe he was just trying to encourage them to be the best they could be in his own way.
“Sorry Monoma, it’s required. A competitive spirit is great! Just not… that competitive. You’re with…” Vlad searched through his folder before pulling out 3 papers. “Momo Yaoyorozu. You two are partnered up because you both have extremely versatile quirks that require decent smarts to get the most out of, under Principal Nezu. Remember, if you antagonize Yaoyorozu in front of the principal, that proves 1-A is superior.” As expected of their teacher, he knew exactly how to handle Monoma. About a single second later, the expected reaction came out.
“You got it, teach! I’ll be a shining example of 1-B’s clear superiority!” Monoma shouted with a manic glint in his eye. “Not only that, I’ll make sure my partner surpasses the rest of their class easily!”
Okay, in Manga’s opinion he was starting to take it a little fa-
“WITH THE POWER OF CREATION WE WILL BE LIKE GO-” Monoma started shouting before getting knocked out by Kendo.
Vlad continued, “Shiozaki will be paired with Mineta due to both of their quirks involving their hair and being capable traps. Shiozaki, if he does anything untoward, tell me and I’ll ensure he’ll get a detention.”
Shiozaki nodded and started to pray for Mineta’s salvation. As soon as Manga noticed her praying he did his duty and started muttering “Pika-Pika” (an onomonapia used to create light) over and over.
“And Fukidashi, you’re being paired with Tooru Hagakure due to your comparable needs to exaggerate gestures to show basic emotion…” Vlad trailed off. “When did Nezu realize this? If you need it, you can have a few sessions with Hound Dog afterward, Fukidashi.”
Fukidashi simply nodded, still muttering to keep the light on his friend as she prayed.
“So… Fukidashi, right? Uh, where’s our hero..?” Hagakure nervously asked. They did show up at the right spot, didn’t they?
“Uh, I dunno.. Let me just- RAAK RAAK !” Manga shouted, using an Onomatopoeia for echo-location he found on the internet the other day. Curiously he didn’t sense any hero-
Out of nowhere, Manga suddenly detected a pocket of air… in the shape of a person?
“Hey-you-two-must-be-Hagakure-and-Fukidashi! I’m-sure-you-know-who-I-am-but-just-in-case-I-am-the-Sonic-Hero-Blur! You-may-have-noticed-that-my-quirk-simply-makes-me-air-pushing-outward-in-a-humanlike-pattern-so-I’m-literally-as-fast-as-the-wind! You-get-all-that?” Blur shouted at high, yet still understandable speeds.
“Y-Yea-” both of the students started before the same voice was behind them.
“Well-first-of-all-us-faceless-guys-and-gals-need-to-exaggerate-our-movements-so-people-can-even-notice-us! It’s-annoying-but-I’m-sure-we’re-all-used-to-it-by-now!”
Well, he wasn’t wrong. They both needed to do that, though Manga had recently figured out how to make emoticons on his ‘face’.
“Well-there’s-no-need-to-practice-that-so-I’ll-be-giving-you-stealth-experience! Not-sure-why-they-cited-that-as-the-reason-anyhow-besides-me-requesting-y’all!” Blur speedspoke, apparently not sure what their exaggerated gestures had to do with hero work either.
‘But stealth training..?’ Manga thought.
‘I’m pretty good at stealth,’ Tooru thought.
“So! I-hear-you-fought-my-nephew-recently-Tooru! Mirio’s-great-isn’t-he? Pride-and-joy-of-my-brother-and-his-wife!” Blur made small talk as he picked them both up.
“The guy who turned naked..?” Tooru asked.
“He wha-” Manga started before the breathe was ripped out of his lungs as they were pulled around town at high speeds, looking for crime.
“Alright-we’re-at-a-villain-hideout! If-you-feel-wind-that’s-probably-just-me-watching-you-so-I-can-give-critique-at-the-end! It’s-all-on-you-but-if-you-want-me-to-intervene-just-shout-‘Excelsior!’ It-was-the-catchphrase-of-a-great-man-from-the-pre-quirks-era-that-I’ve-been-obsessed-with-lately.” Blur informed them.
Well, looks like this was how the day was gonna be today.
At the end of the day, Tooru and Manga were battered and bruised and exhausted. Brought back to Blur’s home to rest, they quickly passed out in the living room.
“Hmm! They-must-be-good-friends-already!” Blur muttered at high speeds, dashing back to his office. As a construct of living air, he didn’t need sleep, no matter how much he yearned to be able to experience dreams.
Day in and day out for almost a week, Tooru and Manga suffered the rather intense stealth training: aka sneaking into active villain hideouts and only getting help when something goes wrong. Sure, they learned, but did it have to be so painful?
Well, only one more day left…
Blur whooshed in front of them. After days of experiencing it, they’ve come to recognize the difference between him and just wind. But they weren’t quite expecting him to show up behind them.
They both suddenly received a tap on their shoulders along with a quiet “Hello!”
Tooru jumped into Manga’s arms while Manga let out a quirk-empowered shriek that shattered nearby glass.
Manga quickly let Tooru down before moving to the side and whistling as if he were innocent.
Tooru turned away as if trying to hide something. “S-Sorry about that Mang- Fukidashi!” Her voice cracked.
Their shoulders are tapped again as they swivel around to face each other before turning back around to face Blur.
Blur pulled out a whiteboard with the words ‘There was a lot of pollution yesterday, so I’m not feeling well. It’s a free day today so do whatever. Though I can tell you’re both getting along well~’
“I don’t know what you mean haha!” Manga shouted, voice highly pitched and an accidental use of his quirk on the last word.
Tooru started laughing before coughing into her fist and starting “Y-Yeah… What Manga said.”
They waited for a response before realizing Blur had already left.
Manga hesitated. Should he do this..? Apparently deciding, he tried to grab Tooru’s hand. He failed to do so until he felt her grab his instead.
Blur whipped out his phone and took a picture before speeding away. He texted the picture to Midnight. It was cute, and he figured his senior might like it.
Returning back to UA after a week, there was a meeting between 2 boys. One needed advice, and the other… also needed advice.
Manga tapped on Neito’s shoulder. “Neito, I need a little help, please help.”
Monoma paused before turning around, and returning his phone to his pocket. “What’s up, Manga?”
Manga could’ve sworn he saw a picture of him and Yaoyorozu but dismissed it because that was impossible.
“I-I think I maybe sorta kinda have a crush on Tooru. How do I ask a girl out?” Manga desperately asked.
Neito stared. And stared. And stared some more. Manga was starting to sweat a little (how could he even sweat? His face is literally paper…) until “I’m still trying to figure that out too, just guess or something.”
Neito did have a point. Who was he trying to ask out anyway..? It didn’t matter.
After a short walk all across campus looking for his crush, he finally found her. Unless it was some other invisible girl, in which case he will ‘vroom’ out of UA to never show his face again, it was time to do what he came here to do.
“Tooru, wou-”
“Manga, wanna go out with me?” Tooru asked.
Manga was silent for a moment. What was he thinking? Well, that’s not relevant to this ending, is it?
“Sure!”
