Work Text:
As he walked through the burning Berlin, he pondered himself and his feelings. It was too late to think about it now, but on the other hand Welt had plenty of time to sort it all out.
He thought about the first time he'd met her, the walks, the conversations in the late afternoon....
And that day on the beach. Oh, Joyce remembered it perfectly, everything he'd felt then, lying next to her, he'd even thought he could feel her breathing. Even his desire to complain about the cold disappeared when Einstein turned her gaze back to the sky and a faint but sincere smile lit up her face.
His face turned red as he relaxed into his own thoughts, Welt looked at the scientist trying to justify his feelings for her, partly it was stupid, maybe even pointless and as bad as possible for him, but the other part of the lab technician wanted to believe and believed that it all made sense, made sense because she cared about him, because now they were lying there looking up at the starry sky.
Everyone has the right to love, they both realised that. But neither of them was in a hurry to voice it.
It was a bad idea to wait till the last minute.
There was no need for words or action now.
It's too late.
No more Einstein jokes, no more red-haired tyrant Tesla. No. Not like that.
It'll all be there, only he won't be there.
It makes me feel sad at the moment.
His musings were interrupted by a person sitting down quietly beside him, he recognised her almost immediately, a realisation fell sharply on his head, "what is she doing here?" "Is she too..." After a second and those thoughts left his head as the girl spoke up
- It's over, Welt. It's over for both of us. - she grinned in spite of what she said.
- ... - He was silent in response, he still didn't expect to see Eins here. Yes, he had wanted to meet again, this time to say everything that had been building up inside him for so long, and now that they were together again.... Silence.
There was no need for words, it wasn't a question or anything else that would need an answer.
The silence, not as comfortable as it had been years ago, was pressing against his temples, forcing him to say something.
- Um... Ein, what-- What happened? I mean, you're here now--
- An accident. - she closes her eyes tiredly. - I'm just saying it was weird, nobody realised what happened. It was.. - she stopped talking for a second, thinking about how best to explain it. - It was very fast. - That was the last thing Lieserl said before she rested her head on his shoulder.
- You haven't changed pathetic Welt...
Herrscher sighed heavily and a smile flickered across his face for a second.
Maybe it was selfish to rejoice in another man's death for your own benefit, but..... For both of them, it was the best outcome that could happen in this world.
Maybe not in this world, not in this universe, millions of light years away, somewhere among the unreachable stars, there is a world where they managed to live in peace and tranquillity, but here....
In this world, they were destined to die.
In their personal hells, each of them pondered their "best life" and each time came to the same conclusion - the best life would be the life where they were together, even if it meant death.
