Work Text:
Onoda had begun the day not really expecting anything from it. It was his first valentines day with his boyfriends, true (and boy, did that feel weird to say, in less than a year he’d started dating not one, but two people; he’d wandered around in a haze of happiness for days after that revelation) but neither of them were particularly romantic. Even considering the fact that he had somehow managed to extract a promise from Midousuji that they would have a Skype date, and that he’d been invited to spend the weekend with a very enthusiastic Manami, his plans for the weekend still mostly consisted of bike riding and perhaps some anime, if he could somehow get Midousuji to gang up on Manami with him.
When he showed up on the nice, clean doorstep in Hakone, however, the person who answered his knock on the door was much too tall to be Manami. Too skinny, too, Onoda realized as he stared up, and up. Was that...?
“Surprise,” Midousuji said, his dark gaze meeting Onoda’s for only a moment before sliding off to the side. Though he didn’t sound particularly enthusiastic, this had to require planning, didn’t it? Kyoto was far enough away that it wasn’t as though he could simply hop on a bus and visit.
The shock of seeing him had made Onoda’s mouth fall open in a small “o,” a fact he didn’t notice until the bright, smiling ball of energy that was Manami appeared behind Midousuji, shouldering him aside and flinging his arms around his small boyfriend. “Surprise!” He said, making up for Midousuji’s lackluster tone with his own. Onoda smiled, hugging Manami back. He smelled like sweat and the cold, crisp air of the mountainside, and Onoda had a moment to wonder how the hell he’d gotten up early enough to take a bike ride before Onoda had gotten there before Manami was pulling back again, kissing him on the cheek. “How was the trip over?”
Flushing slightly at the affection, Onoda followed Manami into the house, Midousuji closing the door behind them with a barely audible gross. “It was fine,” Onoda said, his head swiveling to take in all aspects of the unfamiliar house. It was... surprisingly normal, but something about it grated on Onoda’s nerves. He shook his head to dispel the feeling, and said, “oh! I almost forgot, i brought these for you!” He set his duffle bag down, reaching in and pulling out two small boxes. He handed the first to Manami, then turned around and held out the second to Midousuji. “I was gonna show it to you on Skype before mailing it, so I brought yours too! I’m glad you’ll be able to eat it on valentines day after all!”
Midousuji stared down at the box as if Onoda were holding out a venomous snake, hesitating before taking it. “Thanks,” he said, still as subdued as before. On impulse Onoda stood up on his tiptoes, surging upwards to kiss the slouching boy’s cheek the way Manami had kissed his. Midousuji’s blush flamed across his cheeks, accompanied by a chorus of “gross! Gross! Gross!” Onoda simply smiled widely in return, glad that he’d at this point figured out what Midousuji’s various “gross”’s meant.
Manami, on the other hand, had already ripped the lid off the chocolates and was sampling one small sphere, a look of bliss on his face as he resolutely ignored the antics happening behind him. “This is delicious, Onoda, did you make it yourself?” He asked, grabbing for Onoda’s hand without looking and miraculously catching it.
As Manami began to drag Onoda to his bedroom Onoda tried to stutter an answer, feeling a bit bashful at the compliment. “W-well, yes, I mean, my mom helped me a bit but I tried my hardest- so they do taste good?”
“They’re not gross,” Midousuji said, following only a step behind them. Onoda turned his head, seeing the way Midousuji rolled the little ball of chocolate around with his tongue. The brown stain over his teeth as it melted made Onoda giggle a bit.
They arrived at Manami’s room, Onoda sitting on his bed while Manami went to the tv that sat across from it and fiddled with its buttons. Midousuji sat beside Onoda, pulling both his legs up and wrapping his arms around the long limbs, resting his chin on his knees. Onoda listed to the side until he was pressed against him, his warmth solid and unmoving as a stone. “I’m really glad you came, Midousuji,” Onoda confessed, though he was sure the sentiment was obvious at this point. “It’s kinda hard only seeing you during races!”
His lips curled back from his teeth when he responded, revealing their squared edges and a tiny smear of residual chocolate. “Well, sorry,” he said, his face tilted in Onoda’s direction but his eyes glancing off it as though Onoda is too bright to look at directly. Manami joined them then, sitting on Onoda’s other side and sandwiching the small boy between the two of them. As the bed bounced under his weight Midousuji’s shoulders relaxed fractionally, in a movement only Onoda and Manami would notice.
“Here, Onoda, look what me and Midousuji found!” Manami said brightly, clicking the play button on the remote he held. Music started to play, a quiet piano piece, and Onoda’s eyes were drawn to the tv as if by magnets. He recognized the anime, but only vaguely. What made his eyes shine like the ocean on a clear day wasn’t the fact of the show itself, it was the title that flashed across the screen. Sakamichi no Apollon. Did they pick it just for him?
“Do you like it?” Manami asked, taking in Onoda’s surprise and delight and feeling his lips curve up on their own in a smile not entirely dissimilar to the one he wears when he feels his heart stutter in his chest during a race. “If you’ve seen it before we can watch something else, but we saw the title and watched the beginning and it looked kind of interesting so-”
Onoda’s bright laugh cut Manami off, and though he huffed out a sigh and put on an indulgent expression he clearly didn’t mind. “You just like it cause of the hill, don’t you Manami?” A light, contrite blush dusted Manami’s cheeks, and now all three of them had flushed some shade of pink (though in Onoda’s case he tended towards scarlet) in under five minutes. Somehow that seemed appropriate, considering that this was the first time they’d all been in the same room together in more than a month.
Two cute boys, however, were apparently still not enough to distract Onoda from the anime playing in the background. It’s a quaint slice of life show, not his usual preferred genre, but the trio of main characters made his heart beat a little faster every time he saw him. The girl reminded him of himself, in some ways; he found her smile lovely, though somehow he failed to realize at the same time that his smile is lovely as well. The taller of the two boys laughed like Manami laughed, and though Onoda couldn’t imagine Manami’s hands in fists it was easy enough to think of him covered in bruises, fiercely competitive to the point where he’d keep riding even after crashing down a hill. Then there’s the shorter boy, quiet and awkward and thinking himself so talented, and at least here the irony of their heights wasn’t lost on Onoda.
It was, however, lost on Manami. Because while Midousuji seemed almost as rapt as Onoda, his gaze fixed on the screen and his teeth still bared but almost absentmindedly, Manami started fidgeting about five minutes in. Two minutes later he pulled out his chocolate, picking up a piece and biting it in half. He flopped backwards on the bed, jostling Onoda a bit and making him look down. “Manami?” He asked quietly, not wanting to disturb Midousuji.
With a smirk that was far more subtle than most would give Manami credit for, he crooked his finger, prompting Onoda to lean back on the bed beside him. “Did you try any of this while you were making it?” Manami asked, gesturing with the hand that still held a hemisphere. Onoda shook his head, opening his mouth to say something that was promptly cut off when Manami popped the chocolate into his mouth, his own lips curling up mischievously. “Isn’t it great?” He let his fingers linger over Onoda’s lips, delighting in the way the smaller boy was growing more flustered.
Their flirting was interrupted by Midousuji, whose long spider-like hands reached out for Manami’s head, squeezing it with a force that wasn’t excessive but wasn’t quite gentle either. “I’m trying to watch,” he said, tone as close to annoyed as it could get when his cheeks were stained with pink again. “Don’t be gross, it’s distracting.”
“Oh, I’m sorry!” Manami didn’t sound sorry at all, his bright voice eclipsing both Onoda’s more sincere apologies and the jazz music now coming from his tv. “I thought you were watching... something else.” The dark glint in his eyes made Midousuji’s widen, a moment before Manami kissed him.
Staring up at the two boys leaning over his torso, Onoda felt like he was going to explode of embarrassment. Here were his boyfriends, kissing. That was, well, he supposed he should have expected it, especially considering all the effort they’d gone to to plan a romantic day for the three of them, but while he knew to be prepared for Manami’s teasing, he somehow hadn’t thought of this particular possibility. The kisses were mostly chaste, though Midousuji still had drool dripping down his chin. Of course, this didn’t stop Onoda from squirming in discomfort, not knowing where to look. It was times like these that his inexperience showed painfully obviously.
When at last Manami released Midousuji, pinching the gangly boy’s pointy nose as a parting gift and ignoring his stunned expression, Manami turned to Onoda, giving him a quick peck on the lips that made him squeak. “What do you say, Onoda? Wanna give Midousuji something else to look at?”
“I u-um, maybe-” Onoda gave an apologetic smile as he patted Manami’s cheek with all the awkward affection of a kitten. “You have a wii, right? Do you want to play something on that?”
Eyes widening in surprise, Manami pulled back a bit, though he ruffled Onoda’s hair as he went. “Yeah, sure! What do you want to play?” His enthusiasm seemed to have waned a bit, but he was still jaunty enough as he took the two steps necessary to turn the wii on and start pulling out games.
Midousuji’s lean side bumping into Onoda drew his attention upwards. He’d begun chewing on his bottom lip, large, white teeth digging in hard enough to look painful. “Sorry,” he said, though he spat the word like it tasted unbearably bitter.
“Oh, no, you didn’t upset me!” Onoda explained, watching the way Manami’s back tensed as he spoke. “Just um. Maybe later?” Though Onoda couldn’t see it, he could imagine the look on Manami’s face. Relieved and a little bit dark in that way it usually only got when he talked about how it felt to be alive. Despite the fact that the expression was a bit disconcerting, Onoda was glad he’d put it there.
Later, however, ended up never coming. After learning that Manami was terrifyingly good at Smash Bros games, even when he wasn’t trying in the slightest, they’d cycled through Manami’s video games (he had a surprisingly large collection, for someone who loved being outside so much) until Onoda had fallen asleep, draped over Midousuji’s lap. Manami smiled fondly at the softly snoring boy, his wispy black hair splayed out on Midousuji’s thighs like a baby bird’s feathers. Midousuji seemed unsure what to do with his hands, leaving them hovering nervously over Onoda’s soft locks.
Luckily for him, Manami smoothly hooked his hands under Onoda’s arms, tugging him up so that he could lie on the bed properly. Both boys knew without discussing it that Onoda must have been so excited for the day that he’d stayed up the night before. His endearing nature prompted Manami to pet his hair with a soft smile, and Midousuji to mutter another, quiet “gross.” They departed for the kitchen, knowing that by the time Onoda woke up it he’d be hungry.
If they shared a few kisses in the meantime, well, there was nothing wrong with that, was there?
