Work Text:

Sparkle was drunk.

She could hear Sampo's voice from seemingly worlds away, telling her to stop as she picked up the bottle in front of her and poured herself another glass. The small crowd that had formed around them drowned out Sampo's attempts to get her to stop even more, as they egged her on.

She grins and stands up, throwing the glass to the ground and downing the entire bottle instead. She hears Sampo sighing and mumbling something about having to drag her home after this from beside her. The crowd goes quiet for a moment before erupting into even louder cheers. Sparkle wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, her eyes half lidded as she looks around at the crowd.

Emerald eyes catch her own. They were wide and curious, peering past the shoulders of many to see what the commotion was about. Sparkle feels her heart stop, as if it was pierced by an arrow. The girl was beautiful, with long lilac hair and the most beautiful pair of wings. The girl smiles and Sparkle feels her heart swell up even more. Oh no, it was hard to breathe, she doubles over coughing, causing her to break away from those emerald eyes. She misses the way they flash with concern

"Alright, alright, I think you've had quite enough to drink.." She feels a hand on her shoulder, pushing her to sit down on the couch.

Sampo picked the now empty bottle from her hands and hands her a glass of water. She accepts it, nodding in thanks as she looks back to the spot where she had seen the girl. But alas, she had disappeared.

"Let's get you at least a little sobered up so you don't pass out during the countdown." He lightly pushes the cup to her face, urging her to drink it. The girl frowns, pushing Sampo's hand away as she downs the cup of water in one go, sighing as she flops backwards. Her head was suddenly killing her.

"Yeah, yeah. Hey... did you see that girl just now?" She looks up at her friend, raising a hand to shield her face from the strobe lights that flashed above them.

"Hm? What girl?"

"Ah, never mind.. you probably couldn't have spotted her with all those people around anyway..." She waves her hand dismissively, springing up to her feet. She stumbles a little from the alcohol and she feels Sampo shoot up to grab her shoulders, steadying her. She shrugs him off.

"I'm gonna get some air, this place is suffocating." She says, already stumbling forward in the direction of the balcony door.

"Hey.. but what about the countdown? I thought you said we would do it together this year!"

"Just go meetup with Gepard or something! You can share a New Year's kiss with him too!" She cheekily replies, laughing as Sampo's face turns red.

"He's with his friends... I couldn't intrude..."

"Oh, please. When has Sampo Koski ever felt shy?" She slaps his arm lightly. He rolls his eyes and sighs in return.

"I'm not high on god-knows how much alcohol like you are, it's different."

Sparkle laughs, her eyes wandering to look for the blonde boy that her friend seemed to love so much. She spots him, in a group with his friends, laughing at something a girl with dark purple hair said. Her eyes light up in mischief and she calls far-too-loudly at the group, waving her arm. "Gepard! Sampo is looking for yo-" A hand is thrown over her mouth and she giggles as Sampo hushes her.

But it was too late as the blonde boy makes his way over. "What's up, Sampo?"

"I'll leave you to it." Sparkle slips away before Sampo could catch her and strangle her. That should give her some alone time without Sampo's nagging until after the countdown. Although, Sampo was her ride home...

Sparkle decides that that will be a problem for next-year her to think about.

She swipes a half-finished cup from a table she passes to bring out with her on the balcony. Sampo wasn't here to stop her now. Besides, it was only half a cup. What could go wrong?

Sparkle finds herself asking that question multiple more times in that night.

The balcony was surprisingly empty when Sparkle stumbled out onto it, clutching the cup of tequila in her hand like it was her lifeline. Only one single person stood on it, her back facing Sparkle as the brunette took another sip of her drink. She could see how the girl in front of her was wearing a backless lilac dress. The girl turns around upon hearing the door being thrown open and Sparkle feels her heart stop yet again.

Emerald green eyes.

Those eyes peer curiously over at her before they soften as she smiles, shifting over slightly to make room, inviting Sparkle to stand with her. Sparkle almost trips over herself as she moves to stand next to the nameless girl.

The pair look over at the view below them, watching as cars rush along the busy streets of Penacony. Even on New Year's Eve, barely half an hour before the clock strikes twelve, the streets were still packed. Sparkle swirls the contents of her drink in her cup as she sneaks glances at the winged girl beside her, considering if she should break the silence. The nameless girl speaks up, looking over at Sparkle.

"How are you feeling?"

Sparkle blinks, momentarily losing her train of thought as those emerald green eyes bore into her soul yet again.

"Huh..?" She replies dumbly, too dazed and confused to get what the nameless girl was asking. She watches as the girl in front of her giggles, a wing moving to cover her face as she laughs.

Sparkle feels her heart threaten to break out of her chest upon hearing the girl's laugh. It was light and melodic, like a songbird singing it's favourite tune. No need for alcohol, Sparkle thinks that she could get drunk on the girl's laugh alone.

"Ah, my apologies. I was just checking in on you, since you were coughing pretty badly the last time we saw each other." The girl stops her laughter, a gentle smile gracing her features.

"Oh! Yes! I am fine, I just choked a little back there, that's all." She feels her face heat up, possibly from the alcohol in her system. She looks down at the cup in her hand. Maybe she really should stop drinking for the night. She shakes her head and grins at the girl, flashing her a thumbs-up. "No worries! My friend helped me out back there."

The nameless girl in front of her laughs again. Oh, how Sparkle loved it when she laughed. "Oh? And where is this friend now?" She quirks an eyebrow at Sparkle. "You seem to be solo right now."

"Sampo? He's with his stupid boyfriend-situationship thing." She waves a hand dismissively before continuing. "I left them to get some fresh air, it gets real stuffy in there with all those people."

The Halovian closes her eyes and takes a deep breath in, leaning over the balcony railing, her eyes gazing far away to a spot where Sparkle could not quite see. "Yeah, that's kinda why I came out here too." She moves closer to Sparkle, their shoulders lightly bump. "Also because the view here is beautiful."

The nameless girl sighs again, her eyes looking down at the city below them. Sparkle follows her eyes, taking in the view as well. From up where they stood, they could see the entire of Penacony.

The city was most beautiful at night, that Sparkle knew, with its skyscrapers and the lights from buildings that shone like stars. She sneaks another glance at the girl beside her and decides that the Halovian was the most beautiful thing about the night so far.

The girl looks at her and their eyes meet again. This time, Sparkle's body moves before she has time to think and she cups the girl's face gently. The sounds of people's chatter from inside the house fading out as the nameless girl leans into her touch.

Perhaps they were both a little drunk, perhaps it was the way the crowd had started counting down. Sparkle glances back into the building, allowing herself to spare a thought to Sampo, wondering briefly where he was. If he was in a similar situation as she was in now, with Gepard. A soothing voice pulls her back, "Your eyes are beautiful."

"You know, I was going to say the same about yours.." And Sparkle feels her face heat up when she hears the girl's laugh again. Their bodies were facing each other now, slowly moving closer. Sparkle could see that the girl's face was now too, dusted with pink. Or was it always like that? Sparkle didn't quite know.

Perhaps it was the way the first firework exploded above them and bloomed in the sky, painting it pink and emerald green, enhancing the Halovian's eyes even more. Perhaps it was all these factor's combined that lead Sparkle to lean forward, capturing the Halovian's lips in her own.

The girl's lips were soft, tasting a mix of alcohol and something sweeter. Sparkle closes her eyes and feels gently hands cupping her face, tilting it upwards as she wraps her own arms around the girl. She feels a light gust of wind fanning her face.

Distantly, she hears the cheers of people wishing each other a happy new year, but she could not care less about them at the moment. The nameless girl smiles into the kiss and Sparkle fights down the urge to blush even redder.

When the two break apart after awhile, the brunette pinches herself to make sure she didn't pass out in the bathroom somewhere and dream this whole thing up. Her arm stung and she winces. Nope, this was very real. That could only mean that the angel in front of her was real as well.

The angel she had just kissed.

Another firework explodes above them, lighting up the nameless girl's features once again. She covers her face with her wings, hiding her blush. It was now Sparkle's turn to stifle a fond laugh. The girl was quite adorable when she was shy. She lifts a wing slightly, peaking out of it.

"You taste like cherry blossoms." She says, a shy smile gracing her lips.

And Sparkle wants to kiss her again, she has half a mind to do just that, but her plans were rudely interrupted when another Halovian walks through the door. An older Halovian. He smiles at at the girl in front of Sparkle, sparing a brief nod of acknowledgment at Sparkle herself. She feels herself standing up a little straighter, something about this man called for uptightness. Sparkle did not like that.

And Sparkle rarely stays for things she doesn't like.

"Robin, my sister. I have been looking all over for you."

"Ah, Sunday." The girl, Robin, says, her eyes widening slightly as if she had forgotten about him. She turns to face Sunday, standing up straighter and fixing her hair. "Happy New Year, brother. This is-" Robin turns to introduce Sparkle but she had already disappeared, slipping back into the building and into the crowds.

Sunday glances at the door, which was swinging closed.

"A friend of yours?"

"No, I don't think so." Robin sighs, running a hand through a hair. A small frown appears on her face as she gazes past Sunday, at the closed door.

"Just someone I met today."

When Sparkle next sees Robin, it's almost a month later as she's sitting at a cafe, waiting for a friend. Sparkle wants to say that she has forgotten about Robin, that she barely recognised her when the lilac haired girl walked past. But that would be a lie.

Sparkle could recognise those wings, the smell of her hair, and when she turned around, those emerald eyes anywhere. The brunette had been up day and night, wondering if she would ever see the Halovian angel ever again. She would dream of gentle hands in her hair and soft lips on her own, of the smell of lilacs to fully engulf her senses once more. She was embarrassed to admit how much she yearned to see the girl again.

Her body once again acts before her mind. Sparkle is beginning to see a pattern in how she acts around the Halovian.

Irrationally.

She stands up from her chair, almost tripping as she moves to catch up with Robin, grabbing her hand from behind. A look of panic momentarily flashes across the Halovian's eyes as she turns around, most likely about to scream for help, but her eyes soften upon seeing Sparkle. The brunette releases a breath she did not realise she was holding in, her shoulders relaxing slightly as the look of recognition appeared in those emerald eyes.

Robin remembered her.

“It’s you." Robin's voice was just as sweet as Sparkle remembered it.

"The girl with butterflies in her eyes." Robin smiles and returns Sparkle's grip, squeezing her hand.

"Allow me to formally introduce myself." She grins at the songbird. "Please, call me Sparkle."

"Sparkle... I never thought I'd ever see you again, much less learn your name." The Halovian reaches up to cup Sparkle's cheek, as if to check if she was real. Sparkle laughs, leaning into her touch. "Same here."

“It’s a lovely name."

Robin's smile was so fond, her touch so gentle, her voice so soft, like she was talking to a puppy. Sparkle did not know how much more she could take. She wanted to kiss Robin again. It only felt right.

But she something was stopping her, would Robin kiss her back? Now that they were no longer drunk on alcohol, now that they were no longer in their safe bubble on that balcony at the top of that building, where it seemed like time would stop just for them, would Robin really kiss her back now?

The Halovian seemed to read Sparkle's mind, sense her uneasiness, because she cupped Sparkle's face in both of her hands and whispered words that would make Sparkle's heart implode.

"Dear firework, may I kiss you again?"

And Sparkle feels herself leaning in, closing her eyes and capturing Robin's lips with her own, once again. Once again, Sparkle feels her senses being overwhelmed with the winged angel in front of her. She pulls her closer and she feels them escaping once again into their very own bubble, blocking out the world around them.

Robin was so sweet. Sparkle felt herself getting addicted to the girl's sweetness.

When the two pull apart, Robin squishes Sparkle's cheeks. Her eyes searching the brunette's face, worry evident.

She was afraid. Afraid that Sparkle would disappear before her eyes once again.

"Please do not leave me again this time."

Sparkle laughs, her eyes tinted with glee. She thinks her laugh is not quite as lovely as Robin's, but she doesn't mind.

"I won't."

And she doesn't.
