“Ughhhhhhhh,” Undyne groaned. “Another hot flash…”
“Want another cold pack?” Alphys asked sympathetically.
“Yeah…”
Alphys went to retrieve a cold pack from the freezer. “Th-this is the last one,” she said as she brought it back to the couch where Undyne was lying, wrapping it in a towel. She placed the pack on Undyne’s chest. “Do these things a-actually help?”
“A little bit… Al, I honestly hate this. Thank god the due date’s almost here.” Undyne threw an arm over her eyes. “Can’t believe I actually want to be cold.”
“P-pregnancy does that to you.”
“Next time, you’re carrying the kid.”
“I do not c-control which one of us conceives.”
“Yeah, true enough.” Undyne sighed and ran a hand over her belly, which was big and round—anyone could tell she’d be having the baby soon. “Man… why does the kid have to grow inside someone? Why can’t they, like… grow in a test tube or something?” A thoughtful look crossed her face. “Hey…”
“Oh my god, we are NOT g-growing a baby in a test tube!” Alphys laughed.
“Why not? Sans and Papyrus were grown in test tubes.”
“Th-that was an entirely unique situation. One that c-can’t be replicated.”
“Damn,” Undyne muttered. “Well,” she continued more loudly, “as much as I hate the pregnancy part of this… it’s gonna be really cool to be moms. Tough as hell, but cool. I’m excited to see what they look like.”
“I know, y-you’ve said that every day since we f-found out,” giggled Alphys, taking a seat on the floor beside Undyne’s head.
“And I’ll say it again!”
Alphys chuckled, then both women fell silent.
After a few minutes, Undyne groaned again.
“Hot flash?” Alphys asked.
“I feel sick.”
“Y-you need a barf bucket?”
“Nah, I think I’ll be okay… for now. Just a little nauseous.”
“Man… now I’m w-wondering if I even want to do this in the f-future,” Alphys thought out loud, half-jokingly.
“I mean, it sucks and I hate it, but I’m willing to follow through for the kid,” Undyne replied. She smiled at Alphys. “It’s not, you know. Ruining my life or anything.”
“W-well, that’s good to know.” Alphys stood back up and kissed Undyne’s cheek. “Want some w-water? It m-might help your stomach feel better.”
“Yeah, thanks.”
Good thing this is almost over, Alphys thought in the kitchen as she filled a bottle with water. She could tell Undyne had tried not to complain too much over the past eight and a half months, but not being able to move around and do her normal activities was taking its toll. She’d had several breakdowns in just the past two months.
Honestly, if Undyne was experiencing even half of what little she’d verbalized up until then, Alphys thought she deserved to be able to whine just about every minute of every day.
She brought the bottle back to Undyne. “I-it’s got ice.”
“Thanks.” Undyne gulped the water down.
Alphys laughed a little. Undyne had been acting so differently around her since that fateful day, eight and a half months ago… more vulnerable, asking for things she would normally hate (like ice water). In some ways, it was a little scary.
But soon enough, she’d be back to her old self… only this time, with “Mom” added to her list of titles.
“I bet the second I meet them, I’m gonna think this was all worth it,” Undyne said.
Alphys couldn’t help but agree.
