Work Text:
Coach Mattias had gotten home late the night before, so there hadn’t been time to get groceries. It was a holiday, too, so he really didn’t need to be anywhere, so he found himself at the diner near the boathouse for breakfast.
“Coach Mattias?” Halima said as he walked in. “What brings you here?”
“Got home late last night. I figured you’d be open for breakfast.”
“Of course. Eggs over easy with toast?”
“Sounds perfect,” he smiled.
“Coffee?”
“Please.”
“It’s been a while since you’ve stopped by,” she commented, handing over the creamer. “Too long.”
“Sorry about that. I don’t have an excuse.”
She smiled, going over to start the eggs.
“So, Halima, what have you been up to?”
“Same as always,” she said. “Breakfast and lunch. I get a lot of your rowers here after practice most days. What about you?”
“Pretty much the same, I suppose you hear gossip about me, then?”
Halima had her back to him, putting the toast in the toaster, but he was fairly certain she was smiling.
“Well?” he prodded.
“I don’t think any of it really counts as gossip,” she said as she set down his plate of eggs and toast. “You should come back here more often, you know.”
